What are you greedy humans doing to our precious planet?

You slaughter my brothers and sisters for fun,

you take away our habitat,

you plunder the earth

and you heat it up with your selfish waste of energy from fossil fuels.

When are you gonna stop all this madness?

Lions – with the scientific name Panthera leo – are the second-largest cat in the world, just behind the Asian tiger. These immense creatures, weighing between 300 and 550 pounds, have sparked the popular imagination for centuries, inspiring awe through their speed and muscular power.

Three million years ago, lions roamed all over Africa and the Eurasian supercontinent. But today, various ice ages and changes in the natural environment means that their range is reduced primarily to Africa and select parts of Asia.

According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, lions are a “vulnerable” species, meaning that their numbers could and should be higher. Currently, researchers estimate that there are between 30,000 and 100,000 lions left on planet Earth. Without significant intervention, there is a chance that they could find themselves on the endangered list alongside other species most at risk of extinction.

World Lion Day, therefore, is an opportunity for lion lovers all over the planet to push back against the decline in the range and habitat of the king of beasts. These giant animals are among the world’s largest land species and an apex predator with a reputation like no other. It would be a tragic loss for both nature and humanity if the species were to disappear entirely from the natural environment.

The threats against lions, however, are all too real. They face the dual specters of increasingly popular “trophy hunting” and human incursion on their traditional wildlands. A reduction in food combined with hunting tourism is making them more vulnerable with every passing year. Over the last four decades, the lion population declined by fifty percent.

World Lion Day, therefore, has three objectives. The first is to raise awareness of the plight of the lion and the issues that the species faces in the wild. The second is to find ways to protect the big cat’s natural environment, such as creating more national parks and reducing the areas in which people can settle. And the third is to educate people who live near wild cats on the dangers and how to protect themselves. Humans and large species like cats can live in harmony together, but only if they understand how to do so. (daysoftheyear.com)

The Days if the Year came up when I was looking for an international day, and I can only find this day to be celebrated on the 2 above links, even so, as I love children and want the best for them I decided to celebrate it today and to bring the plight of children to everyone's attention. The world is in a more precarious situation than ever today, which badly affects our children, we have to fight for them and we can, so let's do so friends!

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️

Candlemas day

History of Candlemas

Near the end of the winter season, as ancient people looked forward to the planting season of spring, many different cultures found ways to celebrate this shift from the cold and dark days to a happier and more productive time of year. Ancient Celts took this time of year to honor the Goddess Brigid. Brigid was the Goddess of purification and fertility. They would honor her by processing from the village across the fields while praying for the health of their soil before planting. The Romans associated their festival to the God Lupercus. This was their God of fertility and shepherds, again playing into the desire to shake off winter’s bindings and bring fertility and light to the planting time.

When Christianity was moving through the world, they too decided to place a festival of light around this time of year. Candlemas in the Christian tradition is better known by two different names – The Feast of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus and The Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a tradition for the churches to bring forward all of the candles to be used for the rest of the year for a special blessing.

This was last year, when we first met Bastian at the shelter. He was 5 years old and in need of a new home...

Today August 8th is International Cat Day and all I can say is: Cats do not end up in shelters for their own mistakes and there are so many wonderful cats waiting for adoption. We cannot help them all, but every home should have at least one... :)

Today is Make Your Dreams Come True Day, it is always celebrated Worldwide on the 13th day of each year.

Make your dreams come true day did not have just one founder, or just one founding date, either. Make Your Dream Come True Day is a day that came into existence as a result of the hard work and persistence of all of the people in this world who have been able to make their dream reality, from Bob Dylan, who composed music and lyrics based on his own dreams, to Mary Shelley, who wrote Dr. Frankenstein based on a nightmare she’d had, to James Cameron, whose masterpiece Avatar was also based on an incredibly colorful and detailed dream he’d had. Make Your Dream Come True Day honors all of these people and more who have had the courage to pursue their dreams and make them a reality.

So after yesterday's evidently catastrophic failure of a shot, I decided I had to try and do better tonight, and a photo of my dinner wasn't going to cut it. I very nearly threw the towel in last night (don't judge me, I've been like it since I was about 6 years old and I can't see it ever changing - if I can't do something well, I'm "reluctant" to keep going with it!). It's pretty disheartening when you take something you were pretty happy with, only to discover that for whatever reason, it aint too hot after all!

Anyway, onwards and upwards! Checked out daysoftheyear.com and it's Cereal Day, so here we are, an action shot of Cheerios. Seriously though, who knew they were so dusty? I have just spent the best part of an hour cloning out dust from between individual Cheerios, so if that's not some sort of dedication, I'm not sure what is!

A bicycle seat, seemingly spring loaded, for 117 pictures in 2017, #21 World Bicycle Day.

I did a bit of research on this day, and it seems it does not celebrate the bicycle, but a trip made on a bicycle by the discoverer of LSD. After taking a dose he decided to ride a bicycle home rather than drive. Good choice! See www.daysoftheyear.com/days/bicycle-day/. So it seems a psychadellic image would have worked here, but this spring-loaded seat will have to do instead.

I've just discovered that today is Unicorn Day! It's quite by chance that I took this, I didn't know when I planned the shot and uploaded it.

December 14 is celebrated as International Monkey Day as it celebrates ‘all things simians’ and raises awareness about different monkeys and primates all across the world. Also termed as Monkey Day or World Monkey Day, the day also celebrates various non-human primates like apes, lemurs. Various environmental activists use this day to spread awareness about issues that these creatures face. As per the reports by daysoftheyear, various supporters of the day include the Smithsonian Institution, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Louvre Museum, London’s National Portrait Gallery, National Geographic, Greenpeace, and Jane Goodall.

International Monkey Day History

The day initially started as a prank back in the year 2000 after an art student at Michigan State University, Casey Sorrow, ended up writing “Monkey Day” on his friend’s calendar as a joke. However, later, Sorrow collaborated with various fellow MSU students on the Fetus-X comic strip. Sorrow till date manages to contribute to the idea of primate welfare. He currently maintains a monkey day website and a blog called “Monkeys in the News”. The blog discusses primate-related news from across the world. Also, it comes out with a list of the top ten primate-related news stories from the past year every Monkey Day.

Monkey Day is now celebrated in different parts of the globe. Some of these countries include Scotland, Turkey, Thailand, Colombia, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Pakistan, India, Germany, and Canada. Various people dress up like monkeys on this day and do their part. Some people also make an effort to visit the zoo as few zoos hold special celebrations for the day. There are also places which hold special events about monkeys. At the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, the authorities raise awareness about the different dangers that primates face by using monkey storytelling. In Turkey, monkey day events are held at The Faruk Yalçın Zoo and Botanical Park in Darıca. In India, at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, a number of different events are held so that children become aware about the issues that the wildlife is facing.

Oh my, what an evening! Came home from work at around 6.30, with absolutely zero idea of what photo I was doing. I had had some vague idea of a classic glass coca-cola bottle, but as I hadn't actually acquired the bottle, that was a non-starter. So then I thought I'd try a different idea, involving christmas tree lights, bokeh, a bowl and some chopsticks, however I quickly realised that was a photo for a day off, not an evening. I then briefly played around with yet another idea before finally looking at www.daysoftheyear.com/ to find it was "Three Kings Day". Brilliant...not. However my brain kindly reminded me of The "king' of burgers, and into the car we got...11minutes later I was stood outside burger king, in the rain, kneeling uncomfortably in the wet grass (classic photography stance), whilst Andy held the flash for me (that's loyalty!). Oh, and this was after being told by Burger King staff I couldn't take a photo of anything to do with their restaurant...I asked them why but they weren't sure so they decided it was ok (I really should know the rules I guess :-D). Anyway, here's the result, I reckon the story is a lot more exciting than the photo!

I had an appointment to meet someone on Central Park West and 66th Street (essentially across the street from the famous "Tavern on the Green" restaurant), and -- as usual -- arrived half an hour early. So I sat on a park bench, and watched a wide spectrum of humanity walk, stroll, and ride past me. Tourists, students, babysitters, friends, lovers, bicycle-powered messengers, retired people, and joggers moved past me, usually paying no attention to me at all...

I had my camera on my lap, pointed more-or-less straight ahead, with the zoom set to an 18mm wide-angle setting. With a couple of exceptions (including this photo), I didn't bother aiming, focusing, or even raising the camera to my eye; if the picture looked like it might be interesting, I just pressed the shutter button at the appropriate moment.

I took three or four pictures of this man as he navigated slowly across 66th Street on Central Park West (just behind where this picture was taken), stopping every few feet to catch his breath. When he reached a tree that's just out of sight on the right side of this picture, he decided to put his arm out and rest a while longer; you can see that in the previous picture of this sequence ...

Seeing his condition, a very nice couple approached him and asked if they could help walk him to the bus-stop, which was about twenty feet further ahead (indeed, you can see the approaching bus in the background). They helped him onto the bus, and then walked away...

And, yes, I did notice the reaction of the woman on the left side of the picture: I felt that she was demonstrating the reaction that all of us would have felt if we were there, in person, to witness this little vignette of humanity...

********************,

Note: on Oct 3, 2009 I made some minor edits to this photo. Primarily, I decreased the extent of shadows in the coat worn by the woman on the left, so you could see more details. There were a few other "hot spots" and "cold spots" throughout the photo that I was able to adjust, too. And I made a modest increase in the color saturation of the faces of all four individuals, as well as increasing the vibrancy of non-skin-tone colors. I do think it helps to be able to see more details of the woman's dark raincoat, but aside from that, none of these "tweaks" are particularly germane to the main emphasis of the photo...

There is a space on my bookshelf, I lent a friend my copy of Mass Observation … perhaps he will return it one day.

120 pictures in 2020/87 Pins & Needles Day. This photo completes my 120 for the year!!

History of Pins and Needles Day

The Broadway Play (musical) was produced by the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union, and told the story of a group of workers holding down a job during the American Labor movement. It first graced the stage from 1937 to 1940, but did appear again in 1978 and appeared on London stages as recently as 2010.

The cast of the original production was made up of sewing machine workers, cutters and basters who simply wanted to do something a little creative in their free time – the play would end up to be so successful that the cast members, who up until then were only able to rehearse at weekends – were able to quit their day jobs and take part in a full 8-weekly show performance schedule.

Pins and Needles was written by Harold Rome, a true Renaissance man who played piano in local dance bands while writing music, studying architecture, and pursuing a law degree at the prestigious Yale University. He brought all of those skills together when he produced Pins and Needles, and created a legend that would live on through the ages while pursuing a form of social justice little heard of its time.

How is it already past mid-October and the clocks set to go back next week? This year is flying past, but Glasgow - or more likely, moi - clearly didn’t get the memo. But I digress from a recent odyssey around the back alleys of my local ‘hood, with the sweet, heavy effluvium from a few herbal preparations wafting in the air, as I dodge the jaggy chaps swaying in the breeze and swigging from a bottle containing one of Scotland’s noted elixirs.

So, what are we talking about here? Well, Buckfast, or Buckie, to be precise: the syrupy libation of choice for the central-western lowlands of Scotland’s unique demographic, the ned (related to the chav in yonder England), better known as “wreck the hoose juice”, “commotion lotion”, “Cumbernauld rocket fuel”, and “Coatbridge table wine”. And during a recent galavant, I ended up in Langside Lane where I discovered a half-bottle of Buckie (empty, obvs) nicely sitting inside an abandoned Adidas trainer, as if in some sort of a cultural cross-promotional identifier for neds - and apparently that’s not far off the mark.

Trainer gurus Custom Crep City UK (www.instagram.com/crepecity/?hl=en) created a limited edition Nike Air trainers to celebrate World Buckfast Day (yes, such a cultural anniversary does exist, and observed by all neds annually on the second Saturday of May since 2015 - www.daysoftheyear.com/days/buckfast-day/). The bespoke company teamed up with Buckie to create a custom pair for sneakerheads, with the trademark swoosh showing the iconic green half-bottle of the breakfast of champions.

www.daysoftheyear.com/days/banana-lovers-day/

Finally, the world’s most popular fruit gets a day of its very own, and it’s about time! Whether you like it straight from the peel, sliced on cereal, or baked into a banana bread, the whole world loves banana! Who can blame them, considering how versatile it is? Banana Lovers’ Day celebrates those who just can’t get enough of this brightly colored monkey bait!

History of Banana Lovers’ Day

Bananas are pretty incredible, we think you’ll have to agree. They’re easily one of the best fruits to add to… well… anything! Need to get a boost to your morning but want to have a shake? No problem! Couple scoops of protein powder, a banana, and some strawberries and suddenly you’re rocking your morning with deliciousness! Have some bananas gone brown on your counter? Nonsense! There’s no such thing as a bad banana, just a banana that’s ready to be baked into banana bread! There’s nothing you can’t do with bananas!

What you may not know is that the whole world is eating ONE kind of banana, and that banana type is not the same thing your great-great-grandparents were eating during WWI or WWII. Banana’s have been one of the biggest examples of monoculture in our history, and something in the past hundred years we had a massive plague hit, wiping out every banana of this strain in existence. So an entirely new banana was introduced and is now the one that is grown everywhere.

But you’re a Banana lover, so yo knew that right? If not, welcome to your first fun fact of Banana Lovers’ Day!

How to celebrate Banana Lovers’ Day

Eat Bananas. Eat Banana derivatives. Start your day and end your day with bananas! That’s how you celebrate Banana Lovers’ Day. Start off your morning with a delicious and nutritious banana, giving you the potassium you need to see through your day. For lunch enjoy a rich banana based smoothie, both filling and nutritious. Ready for dinner? Enjoy a good slice of buttered banana bread to round out the rest of your meal, and then for dessert enjoy bananas foster. It really is an all purpose Swiss Army Fruit! Banana Lovers’ Day is your day to go nuts and indulge your banana-y love!

Here is a link with some information www.daysoftheyear.com/days/reptile-awareness-day/. I was hoping to find some of the town's reptiles out earlier today despite the bad weather and here is an adult male Water Dragon, a beautiful creature with an impressive tail.

It’s not a Yorkshire Pudding if it’s less than 4 inches high- apparently!

“In 2008, the Royal Society of Chemistry got involved when it declared that “A Yorkshire pudding isn’t a Yorkshire pudding if it is less than four inches tall.” This came about when Ian Lyness, an Englishman living in the Rockies experienced a series of Yorkshire pudding “flops” in the high country despite huge successes in the low country. It is no myth – the rise is just not the same at certain altitudes! Pretty crazy when you can quite obviously cook perfect pudds atop the Pennines.”

Grenada's Independence Day is celebrated annually on February 7th, marking its independence from the United Kingdom in 1974, with festivities including parades, cultural events, and national ceremonies to foster unity and cultural pride, as seen in celebrations for its 50th anniversary in 2024 and upcoming 52nd in 2026. #Grenada52, #HappyIndependenceGrenada, #PureGrenada, #GrenadaIndependence

It’s practically impossible to look at a penguin and feel angry - Joe Moore

It was World Penguin Day on Monday, and I missed it. But I have a few snaps to share, including a penguin hug. Better late than never.

//World Penguin Day takes place during the annual northern migration of Adélie penguins, a species of penguin that is native to Antarctica. Adélie penguins migrate north to have better access to food during the winter months when the sea ice expands and then, during the summer, return to the coastal beaches of Antarctica to build their nests.

This annual celebration of penguins was created at McMurdo Station, an American research center on Ross Island. Researchers noticed that the Adélie penguins began their migration around this day each year, and so they founded World Penguin Day as a way to mark the occasion and raise awareness of these creatures.

While the day originated from the Adélie penguin’s migration habits, it celebrates all species of penguin and highlights the plight of these water-loving creatures. Of the 17 or so species around today (the total number of species varies depending on how you classify them, but there are at least 17 and possibly as many as 20!), sadly 10 of them have been deemed endangered or vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and 3 are considered near threatened.

Penguins spend up to three quarters of their lives out at sea and are reliant on the oceans for food. Overfishing and pollution such as plastic and oil spills therefore pose a real threat to these birds and have contributed to decreasing populations, which in turn has a knock-on effect on the wider ecosystem. And for those species based in the Antarctic (the emperor penguin and the Adélie penguin), climate change is shrinking the sea ice, which not only impinges on their habitat but can also impact chick hatching times and the availability of food.//

Today is Wife Appreciation Day and our Troopers didn’t want you to forget to appreciate your wife! Sometimes all it takes is a hug!

Over the course of my 365 Days of Clones series, I’ve mentioned how lucky I am to have a very understanding wife when it comes to my photography addiction. But Colleen is more than just understanding; she is loving, caring, funny, cheerful, honest, amazing, my best friend...and the list goes on and on.

This one’s for you.

Love you Babe!

National Wear Red Day is a day in February when many people wear red to show their support for the awareness of heart disease. In the UK, Wear Red Day is held on the first Friday of February. It's organised by Yorkshire-based charity Children's Heart Surgery Fund to raise awareness of congenital heart disease. #WearRedDay, #OurHearts

Groundhog Day, held annually on February 2nd, is a popular North American tradition where a groundhog's emergence from its burrow is used to predict the arrival of spring. According to folklore, a sunny day causes the groundhog to see its shadow, forecasting six more weeks of winter, while a cloudy day predicts an early spring.

I was once told that teaching can be described as “Herding Cats”. Although I’m not sure if I agree, it has always been one of my favourite expressions. Today is a day to celebrate all of the “Cat Herders” out there as today is Cat Herding Day.
