As cliched as it may sound, my mother is my #GirlHero. She is a fiesty woman that came from a small town, who ran away from home to pursue her dream job... she was a doctor in the armed forces, has over 8 different medical certifications, is a certified pilot and she speaks 9 languages! She also used to ride around in an open top jeep (what a badass!), Whew!

She's also an amazing mother, daughter, sister, wife, business partner... She's the one who taught me that I could be anything and everything I want to be... And that's why she's my #GirlHero... it's so important to inculcate that sense of confidence in the girls around you and hopefully that's what we do this International Day of the Girl Child.​

To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, British High Commission opened its doors and offered a young woman from India a chance to be the British High Commissioner for the day. Jagriti Yadav from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a graduate with a BSc in Physical Science with Computer Science from Delhi University won the competition.

To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, British High Commission opened its doors and offered a young woman from India a chance to be the British High Commissioner for the day. Jagriti Yadav from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a graduate with a BSc in Physical Science with Computer Science from Delhi University won the competition.

Sri Lankans are known for their fondness of cricket, and women and girls are no exception. Check out the Sri Lankan women's twenty20 cricket team raising their hands for girls. We’re proud to say that these women have extended their full support for International Day of the Girl and Plan’s Because I am a Girl campaign. In case you missed it, Sri Lanka were the hosts of this year’s ICC Women's (and men’s) World Twenty20 event.

"We are happy to get to know Plan and we thank Plan for giving us the opportunity to be part of the girls’ programme. We would like to extend our support for this worthy cause and place the focus of girls in the spotlight," said Vannessa De Silva, manager of the team.
