Terry Bennett in his book "Photography in Japan 1853-1912" dedicated a short section to David Welsh who was closely associated with various top photographers like Felice Beato, Stillfried & Andersen or Usui Shusaburo. For a short period (1890~1892) he also operated his own photo studio in Yokohama. However little is known about his works and in the Bennett's book you will find a reproduction of one of only two known photographs from the short-lived Welsh studio. The photograph has a faint Kimbei blind stamp imprint on it and Bennett suggest Welsh was short on supplies and bought them from a rival studio. And this is where things get interesting...

The base CDVs both have "David Welsh & Co." signature on the back, but also Kimbei's blind stamp. The two albumen prints are from Kimbei's catalogue: "1. The Pilgrim Going up Fujiyama" and "125. Jinrikisha."

Two years ago I wrote a post discussing the attribution of two photographs to either David Welsh or Kusakabe Kimbei. You can read about it here.

The carte de visite I'm posting today doesn't solve the mystery, but it might push foward research on David Welsh Photography Studio.

There is another cdv taken with the same backdrop:

www.matchnews.it/images/giappone/7.jpg

If you zoom in you can see the lettering "K. Kimbei Photographers," - the same as in the photo posted above.

With that we have four photos taken in the same studio, however the matter of attribution is still unclear.

Drummer Ben Wysocki of The Fray. Ben was a great subject, not only due to his animated performance, but because he had his own personal sidelight house right, which made photographing him a blast.

Guests had the This is a rare opportunity to engage with both the architects and clients behind two intriguing houses.

Paul Owen, founder of Owen Architecture, presented Brisbane Riverbank House alongside his client, Davin Lim, a cosmetic and laser specialist. The clever design creates two large courtyards by placing a new living pavilion next to the existing 1930s house.

David Welsh, co-founder of Welsh + Major, will share the fascinating story behind Hush House, joined by client Kellie Hush, a fashion entrepreneur and journalist and former editor-in-chief of Harper's BAZAAR Australia.

David Welsh and David Findlay on stage 3 of the 2009 speyside stages

Another seven years and the saga continues...

Both CDV's share the same backdrop, but unlike the previous case there is no Kimbei's blind stamp imprint.

Until now I've recorded seven albumen prints with this particular backdrop - all of them incorporated in Kimbei's portfolio. What's more the pilgrim is also labeled "1. The Pilgrim Going up Fujiyama".

With Aunt Ahlene, Uncle Dave, and Dan Marshall.

My first shot with the self timer... but with a pretty short tripod.
