David Walsh's extensive personal library is housed at MONA and can be accessed through this tunnel. Like all spaces inside MONA there are wonderful tricks of light and perspective, as can be seen to some degree in this shot.

MONA - The Museum of Old and New Art is quite a drawcard to this little state. Situated just outside of Hobart this underground Museum sets out to shock, question and explore what art is. This particular sculpture of a head has several "openings/windows" with animated video flashing inside representing various thoughts I suppose.

MONA was conceived as giving back to the community by the founder who was a professional gambler and obviously made a ton of money.

Well worth a visit!

Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart, is a private owned gallery with restaurants, gardens, accommodation, tennis court, vineyard, and some iconic art, some unforgettable installations and some forgettable ones.

It is truly remarkable. It is carved into a headland north of Hobart’s CBD. It has been called many things since its shock-and-awe opening in 2011. Quixotic. “A subversive adult Disneyland” (owner David Walsh’s description). Iconoclastic. Shocking.

At heart, MONA is a world-renowned art collection that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a place to appreciate art, without the pretension. The gallery's owner invites guests to have fun, get tipsy, be shocked, be delighted, laugh, catch a gig, eat hot chippies, dine in style, hallucinate in bright lights.

Mona’s mirrored entry is the first clue your senses are in for a wild ride inside. There’s no signage and no natural light in an underground labyrinth.

It certainly has a special setting, which you can appreciate from a top class restaurant of by lying on bean bags on the lawns drinking wine while enjoying a pasta!

"Fine art" photograph of the Museum of Old and New Art. This image was edited from RAW, with all the sliders moved to include ''69'', with reference to the museum's themes of life, sex and death. It was the last photo edited in a series taken one night when I got home at 3am.

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is a setting for art unlike any other. Founded by mathematician turned entrepreneur David Walsh, an excavated sandstone quarry has been turned into a museum by architects Fender Katsalidis, Tandem Design Studio and Coffey Mining, a creative welcoming location for art and installations that go beyond sex and death with shades of Petra. Apparently the rock oozes water when it rains (this is a foyer...the Void bar at the end has a great selection of drinks, including local whiskies).

While the Moorilla winery next door put Tasmania on the map, MONA's opening in 2011 made people want to come here. In 2014 it attracted 330,000 visitors - that's 28 per cent of all the state's visitors - and they go on to visit other parts of Tasmania too.

The Moorilla vineyard on the Derwent River is built over a former sandstone quarry only a metre above sea level, and the roots of the lower vines go to salt water. The vines seem stunted, as they should be two-three feet off the ground. They're hand-picked at harvest (there's no alternative but the wines are great).

They are replacing a bad Gewurtztraminer clone in front, the seedlings to the left will be replanted. The winery is just to the left (out of photo) and there is a brewery, Moo Brew. Production is usually in small lots, so the winery aims for a high standard and price point to compensate.

The winery also has a second vineyard, St Matthias, in the Tamar Valley. Among the wines the Muse pinot noir and syrah stand out. Some of Moorilla's wine bottles have cloth labels, reflecting original labels which were made by hand.

Before being purchased by David Walsh in 1995, Moorilla was founded by Claudio Alcorso who ran Silk and Textile Printers and contributed to the arts, including the Elizabethan Theatre Trust; he was also founding Chairperson of the Australian Opera.

Joe Walsh Tours Ltd (JWT) is an Irish-based travel agency founded by Joe Walsh in 1961 as a small family business with one office in Nassau Street, Dublin. The tour operator initially specialised in Diocesan and pilgrimage travel and by the early 1970’s had diversified into sun holidays on the Continent. Today JWT have offices in Dublin, Cork, Manchester, London and Glasgow offering a comprehensive range of tours and holidays as outlined on their website homepage.

As a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, JWT ceased trading and KPMG were appointed liquidators of the company, who put the business back up for sale in May 2021. David Walsh who had been running the company beforehand acquired the business and certain assets of Joe Walsh Pilgrimtours Ltd, including the Joe Walsh Tours brand. JWT had reopened for business in October 2021 and continue to organise pilgrim tours.

This badge would have been available to pilgrims who travelled with JWT to such destinations as Lourdes, Rome, Compostela in Spain and Sorrento in Italy.
