This Sony cassette tape was made for me by my friend Neil Bowman, way back in 1984. It came out of a closet duffle bag that I had held on to. Totally nostalgic and totally good music.

David Sanborn was born in Tampa, Florida, and grew up in Kirkwood, Missouri. Now aged 69, he was played many different styles of Jazz over the years. this band represents a return to Electric Fusion. I took photos of Sanborn with Bob James at the 2013 London Jazz Festival, see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157638107485686/.

16th November 2013 at Barbican, London EC2.

London Jazz Festival, www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk/.

Country: United States. Style: Jazz - Modern.

Lineup: Bob James (p), David Sanborn (alto sax), Scott Colley (b), Steve Gadd (d).

I knew about David Sanborn (I bought a Paul Butterfield album with him playing on it way back in the 1970s, and this was the third time I’ve seen him perform in recent years), but Bob James was new to me (apparently he is a big name amongst Smooth Jazz followers). This was the pair’s second album - the first in 1986 and the second this year. They were billed as inspired by the Dave Brubeck- Paul Desmond Quartet, and this took the form of instrumentation and feel rather than any Brubeck tunes.
