The Zakkendragershuisje dates back to 1725. Bag carriers used to be notified that there was a job with the clock in the roof turret. Before the division of the work was 'smacked': the men passed dice through a funnel. Whoever threw the highest eyes got the job.

St Giles’ Cathedral probably dates from the 12th century (Normand architecture) but it was rebuilt in a Gothic style from the 14th to the 16th century. Built as a Catholic Church, the cathedral became Presbyterian after the Scottish Reformation in 1560, with John Knox being the first Protestant minister. It is covered with amazing stained-glass windows all dated from the 19th and 20th centuries and designed by a diverse array of artists and manufacturers. St Giles' forms the north side of Parliament Square with the Law Courts on the south side of the Square. It sits on the south side of the High Street: the main street of the Old Town and one of the streets that make up the Royal Mile from Edinburgh Castle up to the Palace of Holyrood House (Holyrood Castle), the principal royal residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

Castle Tioram (pron. Cheerum in Gaelic) dates back to the early thirteenth century and was home to the MacDonalds of Clanranald. The Castle benefits from being located in Loch Moidart on the isle of Eilean Tioram becoming inaccessible at High tide and guarding the entrance to the River Shiel which provides access far inshore to Loch Shiel and Glenfinnan. A small garrison was stationed in the castle until the Jacobite rising of 1715 when Allan Macdonald of Clanranald torched it to keep it out of the hands of Hanoverian forces. The Castle hasn't been lived in since and is now in very bad condition and was closed to the public in 1998.

The chapel dates back to the 15th century and was dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel. It is a small structure with a simple design, and its precarious location on the rocky outcrop adds to its charm and historical significance. The chapel served as a place of pilgrimage and worship for local residents.

The legend associated with Roche Rock involves a hermit named St. Gonand, who is said to have lived on the rock. According to the legend, St. Gonand miraculously transported the chapel's stones to the top of the rock, with the help of angels. The chapel was then dedicated to St. Michael.

Carolina Coastal freight train No. 120 has turned the wye at Chocowinity, NC on Aug. 21, 2024 with GP15's No's. 1501 and 1502 and is headed back to Wilson. The station dates back to the original Norfolk Southern Railway and thankfully has survived, complete with the signage.

The Crowell-Bourne Farm in West Falmouth, Cape Cod dates back to 1775.

Cley was once one of the busiest ports in England, where grain, malt, fish, spices, coal, cloth, barley and oats were exported or imported. The many Flemish gables in the town are a reminder of trade with the Low Countries. But despite its name, Cley has not been "next the sea" since the 17th century, due to land reclamation. Some of the buildings that once lined the quay remain, notably Cley Windmill, which is Grade II*-listed and, according to Wikipedia, dates from 1819. This is one of the most famous landmarks on the North Norfolk coast. These days it provides holiday accommodation.

The marshes around Cley are internationally important for their populations of rare breeding and visiting birds. Cley Marshes bird reserve has been in the care of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust since 1926, making it the oldest county Wildlife Trust reserve in Britain. The village of Cley lies within the Norfolk Coast AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the North Norfolk Heritage Coast.

Garden of the Humble Administrator in Suzhou. The garden dates back from early XVI c. and is, probably, the best known of the "Classical gardens of Suzhou," a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The sign at the entrance said that so many millions people visit it per year (I don't remember exactly how many), but it felt like they were all there that day. ;-) But if you can abstract away from the crowds, the garden is very pleasant and elegant.

I wonder if you noticed that over time geotags of photos from China deteriorate. Every time I go to add a new image, I see that carefully placed geotags from previously uploaded images from the same area have shifted by a few hundred meters and have to be readjusted. Happens only to images from China, as far as I can tell. Of course, nothing happens to the geotags, they are just two numbers in the metadata. Someone messes with the map, and I wonder who is responsible.

This is where the Lancaster Canal broadens out at Carnforth to allow canal boats to easily turn round. The canal dates from the late 1790s and was intended to improve the supply of coal from the Yorkshire coalfields to Lancaster. It was never completed, and trains eventually took over that role. These days, the canal runs from Tewitfield - a few miles north of Carnforth - down to Preston.

Delfshaven dates back to the 14th century as it was built as the harbour for the city of Delft. The town is famous for the Pilgrim fathers who left Delfshaven in August 1620 on board of the Speedwell. The Zakkendragershuisje ("Bag cariers house") in the middle dates back to 1653.

The history of Boutemont Castle dates back to the year 1000 with the edification of a feudal motte surmounted by a wooden tower . From 1405 onwards The stone building was built in the 16th century and has been transformed ever since.

The impressive Kas Amiphitheatre dates fron the 6th century BC. From the Hellenistic Period it overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, it has 26 tiers of seats, an agora (gathering place) and the remains of underground domed chambers, once used as silos.

Its history dates back to 776 AD. In 1806 the former abbey was mediatised by the Kingdom of Württemberg. The abbey church became the parish church and the monastery became a "castle" (Schloss) or country house.

With a history that a dates back to the 13th century Mousehole is a charming Cornish fishing port.

This scene, away from the harbour depicts some of the backstreets and is thankfully devoid of motor vehicles. One of the lovely aspects of the port is there fact that virtually all properties are slightly different to one and other.

The cathedral city of Ely is some 14 miles north north-east of Cambridge and 80 miles north of London. It is in the middle of the Cambridgeshire Fens and is built on a 23-square-mile Kimmeridge Clay island which, at 85 feet above sea level, is the highest land in the fens. The beautiful cathedral, seen in the centre, was built by the Normans at the end of the 11th century. To the immediate right of the cathedral, facing Palace Green, is the former Bishops Palace which dates from the 15th century, while the timber-framed cottage on the right dates from the 16th century.

This church dates back to the 16th century. XVI. It is located at the top of the São Paulo mountain range, 1 km south-west of Castelo de Vide.

Its set consists of three volumes: nave, chancel and sacristy.

The nave is trapezoidal, the ceiling is in vault of cradles and it pulls out of a straight cornice. On the North wall there is a niche and a marble sink for holy water. On the west wall opens the triumphal arc of perfect return with a barred iron door, which communicates with the chancel.

All the walls are covered in white tile until the start of the vault, next to the ground there is a skirplate of blue and white tiles forming chess.

The main chapel of a circular plan, the ceiling is a semi-spherical dome. On the north wall there is a gap for illumination and on the opposite wall, the access to the sacristy. The altar is placed in the West wall, it is of baroque style with a niche in the center that contains the image of Senhora da Penha. The whole set is tiled.

On the main facade are three openings: the main door, a barred partition on the left, and a door in the shape of a four-leaf clover, surmounted by a panel of tiles representing Senhora da Penha. In the upper angle of the pediment stands a cross in granite.

The canal construction dates back to the 1830’s after the war of 1812 when the USA tried to take this colony of Great Britain after the Napoleonic wars. In order to increase the defence of Upper Canada should there be another war with America, multiple canals were constructed to connect Montreal with Kingston/Great Lakes (Cornwall canal) and Ottawa (Rideau canal). This embankment is nearly 200 years old. Up to 1959 when the St. Lawrence Seaway was opened and this canal was closed, all boating throughout Canada to the Great Lakes went through here. Also, factories were constructed along this canal including a huge paper mill, Domtar, that was operated for over a 100 years closing down in 2006. The canal was maintained with the assumption that it could be another access to the St. Lawrence River crossing the Cornwall power dam, but this will never take place, so it will remain only a recreational water location for the City of Cornwall. Hopefully it will be maintained by the city for access to paddlers.

The Krämerbrücke, here a look inside the Krämerbrücke, is a bridge in the Thuringian city of Erfurt in Germany which is covered with inhabited, half timbered buildings on both sides. It is unique in Europe north of the Alps. The footbridge spans the Breitstrom, a branch of Gera River, connecting Benediktsplatz and Wenigemarkt.

The bridge was built next to a ford and was part of the west-eastern trade route Via Regia. Originally constructed from wood, it was first mentioned in 1117 after its destruction by one of the many fires. Its first documentary evidence as “pons rerum venalium” dates back to 1156. Already on this wooden bridge grocers had erected stands on both sides.

Because of repeated fires in 1175, 1178, 1213, 1222, 1245, 1265, and 1293 the municipal administration acquired all bridge rights from the monasteries in 1293 in order to build a stone bridge, which was finished in 1325 with uninhabited half-timbered stands on top of it. At both bridgeheads stone churches with gate passages were erected, at the western end St. Benedicti and at the eastern end St. Aegidien, which had existed as a bridge chapel in beforehand (first mentioned in 1110).

The 79 m long arch bridge has been erected in lime- and sandstonework and since then consists of six visible barrel vaults with diametres from 4.8 m to 7.8 m.

After a city fire in 1472, which destroyed nearly half of the city and the stands on the bridge, it was reconstructed in its current form with then 62 half-timbered buildings. To make the three-storey houses of 13 m to 15 m height habitable, the deepness of the buildings was extended by the wooden “Sprengwerke” next to the arch vaults. The width of the bridge finished in 1486 since then amounts to 26 m with a space of 5.5 m between the two rows of houses. At the latest since 1510 the name Krämerbrücke (which means "grocers' bridge") was commonly used.

Till the 18th century the number of houses on the bridge had been reduced to 38, due to unification and reconstruction caused by fires. The church St. Benedicti was sold in 1807 and demolished in 1810 in order to build a new house. In 1895 its tower had to give place to the newly built “Rathausbrücke” (town hall bridge), which crosses the river parallel. For this project it was discussed to pull down the entire bridge.

Because of its special importance for the history of Erfurt and history of architecture in general, the Krämer Bridge was granted special preservation in GDR-times. All buildings were restored from 1967 to 1973 and extensive repair works were done to the vaults in 1985/1986 and 2002. Since then the bridge may be used by cars up to a weight of 11 tons.

This building dates from 1746 although there had been a chapel on the site since 1662. 2 storeys red brick. Half-hipped tiled roof and eaves cornice. 3 cambered mullions and transoms. Wide doorcase with fluted pilasters containing 2 6-panel moulded doors with a pediment over. Gallery inside and contemporary pulpit.

Although the building looks plain, even severe, from the outside, the timber-framed interior is of considerable architectural interest. The painting on the wall by David Embry depicts the visit of Benjamin Franklin, one of the stalwarts of the American Declaration of Independence, who in 1774 is believed to have visited the Meeting House with his friend Joseph Priestley, the celebrated Unitarian minister and scientist who discovered the existence of oxygen as a constituent of the air. (Priestley was later obliged to flee to America because of his radical views.) If you get near enough to the painting you can read what is written on the hymn-book in the picture. The famous visit is commemorated by a plaque on the front of the church donated by the Tenterden Trust.

The church dates from the 16th Century and is the burial place of the explorer Vasco de Gama who was the first european to reach India by sea. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The major figure in reviving old enameling techniques in England was Alexander Fisher (1864-1936), who trained as a silversmith until inspired by French artisan Louis Dalpayrat with whom he studied. Fisher was an influential teacher and author on enameling, and his pieces are generally associated with the Arts & Crafts movement. He contributed to the art magazines of the time, such as Studio. He published his book in 1906: The Art of Enamelling upon Metal: with a Short Appendix Concerning Miniature Painting on Enamel; it’s available online at archive.org/details/artofenamellingu00fishuoft

His major work was a series of enameled plaques showing scenes from the operas of Richard Wagner. The plaque with two scenes from Tristan and Isolde dates from 1896 and is made of nickel silver, enamel and opals. An 1898 plaque with three figures is made of enamel and silver. Both are on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond

Achilla Millefolium - The name dates back to Greek Legend when Achillies upon the advice of Chiron applied Yarrow to his friends wound at the seige of troy to stop the bleeding. Yarrow is also a derivative of an Anglo Saxon Herb for "Healer" - it has a number of other names such as carpenters weed, soliders woundwort, nose bleed - all of which realate the plants ability to stop bleeding and also has antiseptic properties. In its history it has been used for magical potions and associated with the devil in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is also really good for dogs as it works in a simialr manner to humans. Anyway it is found in most fields and grasslands in the UK but it isnt well recognised anymore - anyway this is a plant I am growing in my garden.

The H. H. Simon and Jude Church is a Roman Catholic church in the town Ootmarsum Twente in the Dutch municipality of Dinkelland. The church is dedicated to the Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddaeus.

The H.H. Simon en Judas of Ootmarsum is the only example of a church in Westphalian Romanogothic style in The Netherlands. It largely dates from the 13th century. The original Romanesque tower was replaced by a new facade and a small wooden tower in 1842.

Gamla stan dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.

The present alleys only give a vague glimpse of the appearance of the medieval city where the gables of the building were facing the streets and contained window bays for offering goods of sale; where filth, the bumpy paving and hand-drawn vehicles made walking circumstantial; and where odours and scents from dung, food, fishes, leather, furnaces, and seasonal spices mingled. During nights (and certainly during the long winters) the city was completely dark, save for exceptional fire watchers and nocturnal ramblers who used torches to find their bearing.

Lucerne, a compact city in Switzerland known for its preserved medieval architecture, sits in the middle of the snowy mountains of Lake Lucerne. The colorful Altstadt (Old Town) is bordered to the north by the 870m 14th-century Museggmauer wall. The Kapellbrücke Covered Bridge (Chapel Bridge), built in 1333, links Altstadt with the right bank of the Reuss River.

After the fall of the Roman Empire in the early 6th century, the German peoples increased their influence in the area of present-day Switzerland. Around 750 the Benedictine monastery of St. Leodegar was founded, which was acquired in the mid-9th century by Murbach Abbey in Alsace. The Latin name "Luciaria" appears for the first time in historical records in 840.

In 1178 Lucerne acquired its independence from the jurisdiction of Murbach Abbey, and the foundation of the city surely dates from the same year. The city began to gain importance after the opening of the Gotthard trade route. In 1290 Lucerne was a large and self-sufficient city with approximately 3,000 inhabitants. At this same time, King Rudolph I of Habsburg obtained authority over the monastery of Saint Leodegar and its possessions, including Lucerne.
