Space is mostly quiet. Data collected by telescopes is most often turned into silent charts, plots, and images. A “sonification” project led by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and NASA’s Universe of Learning program transforms otherwise inaudible data from some of the world’s most powerful telescopes into sound. This effort makes it possible to experience data from cosmic sources with a different sense: hearing.

Westerlund 2 is a cluster of young stars – about one to two million years old – located about 20,000 light-years from Earth. In its visual image form, data from Hubble (green and blue) reveals thick clouds where stars are forming, while X-rays seen from Chandra (purple) penetrate through that haze. In the sonified version of this data, sounds sweep from left to right across the field of view with brighter light producing louder sound. The pitch of the notes indicates the vertical position of the sources in the image with the higher pitches towards the top of the image. The Hubble data is played by strings, either plucked for individual stars or bowed for diffuse clouds. Chandra’s X-ray data is represented by bells, and the more diffuse X-ray light is played by more sustained tones.

This soundtrack is our muse! 🎶

Imagery from NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and Chandra X-ray Observatory have been combined to show data of the area around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the core of the Milky Way galaxy. The combined images enabled researchers to develop a sonification, or an adaptation of visual information into audible, even musical sounds.

This new data has provided evidence that this black hole had an outburst about 200 years ago after devouring gas and dust within its reach.

Visual description: In the sonification, an arched line ripples across the image, beginning at our lower righthand corner. As it passes over the dappled orange mist representing IXPE data, sounds like digital winds are triggered. When the arching line passes the indigo veins and specks representing Chandra data, notes are played resembling steel drums.

This latest installment from our data sonification series features three diverse cosmic scenes. In each, astronomical data collected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes are converted into sounds. Data sonification maps the data from these space-based telescopes into a form that users can hear instead of only see, embodying the data in a new form without changing the original content.

When a star like the Sun begins to run out of helium to burn, it will blow off huge clouds of gas and dust. These outbursts can form spectacular structures such as the one seen in the Cat's Eye nebula. This image of the Cat's Eye contains both X-rays from Chandra around the center and visible light data from the Hubble Space Telescope, which show the series of bubbles expelled by the star over time. To listen to these data, there is a radar-like scan that moves clockwise emanating from the center point to produce pitch. Light that is further from the center is heard as higher pitches while brighter light is louder. The X-rays are represented by a harsher sound, while the visible light data sound smoother. The circular rings create a constant hum, interrupted by a few sounds from spokes in the data. The rising and falling pitches that can be heard are due to the radar scan passing across the shells and jets in the nebula.

This year the FFF+ have created a group challenge called "Five On The Fifth" . . . five images in the form of a collage, must be uploaded on the 5th of each month, with there being a different theme, set by a member of the group each month.

This months theme, Media, has been chosen by David Nice

I've chosen to represent a variety of media - written media in the form of an old marriage certificate, light media used in writing data, sound represented by the sensitive ears of a cat, physical/metaphysical represented by the praying hands statuette and growing media shown by the yellow lichen on the birch tree. We have media surrounding us!

Visual artist Ryoji Ikeda, a key figure in the world of electronic music, is famed for his overpowering live performances and mind-expanding audiovisual work. Ikeda is compiling a spectacular presentation for Eye that will immerse visitors in images and sound.

In creating his minimalist and breathtaking art, Ikeda (born in Japan in 1966) draws on mathematical concepts, quantum mechanics, data, sound and light, transforming them into works of intangible power and beauty, often capturing the invisible structures and data that shape our lives.

With mathematical precision, he reduces sound and images to their essence in stunning installations that bombard viewers with visual data. From pixels to the universe, he brings together the very smallest and very biggest in his work.

Honda’s Internavi car navigation system designs drivers’ journeys using vehicle log data. Sound of Honda / Ayrton Senna 1989 used 24-year-old Formula One data to bring an Ayrton Senna race back to life in sound and light. The data from the then world’s fastest lap, by Senna in the qualifiers for the 1989 F1 Japanese Grand Prix, was digitally reconstructed and analyzed. By matching this with recordings of MP4/5 cars, reproductions were created of the engine sounds at the time. Installing speakers and LED lights along the 5,807-meter Suzuka circuit, the reproduced engine sounds were paired with motion data from the race. The 1:38:041 lap time was recreated on a website in 3D computer graphics using WebGL (an API for displaying 3D graphics in a browser), enabling viewers to experience Senna’s performance online. A smartphone app also allowed drivers to enjoy the sounds of Senna’s lap in their cars.
