To commemorate its 100th anniversary, IBM commissioned a unique public exhibition called THINK. The exhibition is an examination and a celebration of the human approach to understanding and improving the world through science and technology.
Upon entering the exhibition, visitors pass an LED wall showing live data feeds in vivid color. Once inside, visitors encounter a glowing forest of screens. A breathtaking film charts man’s patterns of progress and understanding. Sosolimited programmed the five interactives that appear on the screens at the end of the film. These interactives explore the history of our progress through Seeing, Mapping, Understanding, Believing, and Acting.
The interactives are visually striking and intuitive, providing visitors with an expansive collection of images, stories, and interviews. These multitouch software applications were designed to seamlessly display large collections of data at high frame rates. We developed the software with OpenFrameworks libraries.
The project was a collaboration between SYPartners, Ralph Applebaum & Associates, George P Johnson, Mirada, and Sosolimited. Photos and video shot by Chris Teague.
VoteEasy.org is a voter education tool that was designed to allow the general public to quickly and easily see how closely political candidates align with their views on 12 key issues. It utilizes thousands of hours of research and a vast collection of data assembled by the nonpartisan group, Project Vote Smart. It is the most up-to-date resource for candidate political information, including voting records, interest groups ratings, campaign finances, and personal biography.
The site allows visitors to interact with 3 levels of data, including exploring all candidates running in a particular state, those running in a specific district, and the individual details of each candidate.
As visitors rank the importance of 12 key issues, the lawn signs respond by jumping forward and back to show the similarity of their candidates.
The tool was recently updated to support Presidential candidates.

Dominic has analyzed his sleeping pattern over the past 9 years. The data was collected “on the side” by mIRC, his IRC client of choice.
For the last ten years or so, I used to turn on my PC when I came home from school or work and shut it down again right before I went to bed. So most of the time when my PC is running, I’m awake. I’ve also been idling in IRC for as long as I had Internet – when my PC is running, so is my IRC client.
He used a PHP script to analize the IRC log and create the visualization below. Awake hours are indicated by pink lines and range mostly from 12 am to 4am. Interestingly we see that Szablewski is rotating his sleep cycle in the months of ’08 and ’09 — free-running sleep, my friends!

Louisiana has made a great deal of progress in recent years as a place to do business for a number of reasons, including ethics reforms, aggressive new incentives and a business-friendly tax environment. The "Numbers" campaign employed data visualization - striking, oversized "stats" - to illustrate the economic momentum that exists in the state.
