No scale in this photo, but that metate is at least 30 cm (1 foot) long and weighs a good 40 pounds. You can see how the skull looks to be extending under the metate, suggesting a possible burial.

Done with all the drawing, taking elevations, and counting and weighing the burned rock. Nothing but the feature and deeply buried rocks left.

This is where I'm digging, targeting a Toyah phase occupation. Test excavations in the 1990s found a hearth with a radiocarbon date of around 1300 AD. The component is going to be sparse.

It was really cold in the morning when we arrived, and the water in the shade stayed frozen until after 10. This ice had actually formed on the pool of water on this cover.

Sunny days are great for work, but not so good for photos. Someone helped me take down the last 7 cm, and then string up some lines to mark the units. One of the full units and one of the mini-units were excavated in the short day, with little artifact recovery.

The green bucket is covering up a probable feature. The other units are being brought down to that level. There's not much recovery here. I guess the grad-all really didn't mess things up as badly as originally thought.

This was along the south wall of money unit 2. It looked a little suspicious all along, but once it was pulled and cleaned, it seems to be a mano. Another interesting piece of the puzzle.

Photos of my crashed hard drive as it came back to me from DataRetrieval.com for a post on Diary of a Network Geek

Last step is sorting and weighing the rocks in the feature. I still have a burned rock measuring scale from the Gatlin site in 2004!

Always, always, ALWAYS back up your pictures in more than one place. I reccomend DVDs as a hard copy, so it can't be erased or destroyed as easily. I'm sure most all of you all do this already, but I assumed 2 places was enough and it wasn't, so yeah.

~~

To make a long story short, I put all of my pictures on an external hard drive. Then I dropped it, and it got nicked, and the data was lost..

Many were recovered from my computer's formatted hard drive, but before that it was a truly crushing loss, and I still did lost several of my very favorites. Always back up your photos.

So that's why I've stopped uploading for awhile, if anybody noticed. I'll be back soon. :)

This is that rock slab feature, after being bisected. It is sitting on a lens of gravel. It's a mixed of burned rock and unburned limestone. There were no artifacts mixed in. Other than that, we still have no idea what it is.

Feature 8 had the classic basin shape with a rock lining, as well as abundant charcoal. Here, you can see some of the rock, the shape of the basin, and the darker matrix stained by ash and charcoal.

Took a while because of the burned rock and the point, but got it done. No definite feature yet, though.

Couldn't put the scale by the actual point because of a slope, but figured I'd take a personal shot with our photo board and scale.

300 Dollar Data Recovery successfully recovered data from Seagate Hard Drive.

We got the two 1x1 money units and the two mini-units done by the end of the day. You can see how the feature is a really discrete cluster of rock, as compared to the more diffuse scatter of smaller rocks in the vicinity. The tape measure is roughly 1 meter.

Once you open the website click on to the software tab

In the foreground is the remnants of Feature 5. In the background is where the dig started back in early December. All of the datum rods and strings have been removed.

Those rocks peeking out at the start of the level were indeed part of another feature, just southeast and below Feature 6 from a couple weeks back. It seems to be another mystery burned rock cluster.

worst thing could happen on a trip is you lost all the photos you took.

for my case, i almost lose all the photos i took on my canon (on my last day at angkor).

i used data recovery software to retrieve the photos back.

got back 80% of 500+ photos but some of them are broken.

still, lucky that i got most of the photos back. so have to be thankful. =)
