The Round Tower (Rundetårn) in Copenhagen, built between 1637 and 1642 by order of King Christian IV, stands out for its unique spiral ramp, instead of traditional stairs. This spiral brick corridor, approximately 209 meters long, provides access to the observatory at the top, the oldest in operation in Europe, which was once part of the University Library. The gently sloping ramp was designed to facilitate the transport of astronomical equipment and books by horse and carriage, a remarkable feat demonstrated by the visit of Tsar Peter the Great, who rode up it on horseback, while the Tsarina followed him in a carriage. Natural light streaming in from the windows illuminates the interior, accentuating the elegance of the white walls and creating an inviting atmosphere. Today, Rundetårn is an important tourist and cultural attraction, offering panoramic views of Copenhagen and keeping its scientific and architectural heritage alive.

As a former chess player and enthusiast, I have always been fascinated by the resilience of the “Games” store, located on historic Skindergade in Copenhagen, next to Jorcks Passage. This store perpetuates the tradition of board games, resisting the digital age and attracting both players and collectors with its display of wooden Staunton chess pieces. With a wide selection of games ranging from classics to the latest releases, chess, with over 1,500 years of history, remains one of the most sought-after games, symbolizing the resilience of traditional commerce in a landscape of constant change in modern retail.

Højbro Plads, in the heart of Copenhagen, emerged from the post-fire reconstruction of 1795, transforming an old neighborhood into a neoclassical public space. The square, now a central meeting point between Strøget and Slotsholmen, features an equestrian statue of Bishop Absalon, the city's founder, whose pedestal evokes the importance of herring fishing. The tower of the old St. Nicholas Church, partially destroyed in the same fire, dominates the landscape. Originally used as a watchtower by firefighters, the church now houses the Nikolaj Kunsthal, a contemporary art center, notable for its neo-baroque copper spire, added in 1909. The cobblestone pavement and the presence of bicycles reflect everyday life in the Danish capital.

During our recent visit to Copenhagen, we stopped by one of the city’s most famous landmarks: The Little Mermaid. This bronze statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, has been sitting on a rock at the Langelinie Promenade since 1913. We were a bit surprised, maybe even disappointed, by how small the statue actually is (just 1.25 meters tall), but when you compare it to Manneken Pis in Brussels, it’s actually bigger! Sculpted by Edvard Eriksen, the mermaid’s melancholic pose reflects the sadness of the original story. Despite some vandalism over the years, it remains a beloved symbol of Copenhagen - Copenhagen, Denmark

The monumental Gefion Fountain, by Anders Bundgaard, stands in Langelinie Park, adjacent to Kastellet, in Copenhagen. Inaugurated in 1908 as a gift from the Carlsberg Foundation, the fountain celebrates the brewery's 50th anniversary and illustrates the Norse myth of the creation of the island of Zealand. The legend tells how the goddess Gefion, by transforming her four sons into oxen of extraordinary strength, plowed the Swedish land to create the island where Copenhagen is located. The bronze sculpture, a remarkable example of the neoclassical style, depicts the goddess leading the oxen in a powerful effort, combining dynamic volumes with stone elements and water jets. In the horizon, the juxtaposition of industrial structures with heritage and coastal landscape underlines the contrast between urban modernity and the Danish mythological heritage, making the Gefion Fountain a testament to the country's rich history and culture.

In July 2015, on a sunny summer day, I captured a moment in Aarhus where children were playing in the fountains on the market square, trying to cool off. At the time, the city was gearing up to become the European Capital of Culture for 2017. Two years later, Aarhus officially held the title, along with Pafos, Cyprus. Under the theme “Let’s Rethink,” the city hosted over 400 cultural events, ranging from art and music to urban development and sustainability, leaving a lasting impact on the city and its community - Aarhus, Denmark

Shown here is the BMX track. And those are the cyclists. I think Shanaze Reade of Team GB could well be one of them.
