Earlier this spring we took a ride to the Dallas Divide area. The sunset was not much to talk about. As we headed for home, I told Dan that the setting sun wasn't through and please turn around. We went back about a qtr. mile and stopped in front of the home that had been Marie Scott's throughout her life. Please google her if you haven't read her story.
This was what was about to happen! Some of you know this ranch as the Double RL, but to me it will always be Marie's Ranch.
This is taken at the Dallas Divide, not too far from Ridgway, in southwest Colorado. I love the purplish San Juan Mountains in the background. This is all part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway. Isn't it beautiful? What's not to love?!

When you think of Colorado, you think of this!! Glorious color this year in southwestern Colorado. Classic shot from the overlook
Another image from Colorado that I never processed before until now. I love this area and revisiting old images brings back good memories. Although I had hoped for more golden aspens and snow on the peaks, I do like the little bit of golden light on the mountain side. Shot at Dallas Divide, just outside of Telluride in September of 2011.

I now finally have time to catch up on copying all my Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Colorado fall photos from my recent to photo trips to my external hard drive ... seems like it's taking forever !
Over time I will post photos from my Oct. 1-5, 2015 Jackson Hole fall photo trip but I thought I'd first post a photo from my Oct. 9-14, 2015 Colorado fall color photo trip first where the light was just extraordinary ... but that's the norm for Colorado's fall colors.
If you plan to go to Colorado next year and want to meet up for a day and head out early to shoot the colors or if you want to get together and shoot the Milky Way at night in some really nice areas let me know.
I have always said Jackson Hole, Wyoming (USA) is beautiful in the fall but Colorado is simply awesome in the fall !
Here's one I took on the morning of Oct. 10 in the Sneffels Mountain Range.

This is Last Dollar Road. It goes from Telluride to the Dallas Divide. It is a road that can get rough, but isn't difficult. It does get harder when wet. Last time it was rough because when it was muddy they didn't grade out the ruts. I recommend 4wheel drive vehicles with very good tires and high clearance. It is possible to do without 4wheel drive, but definitely not when muddy.
This is a view along Last Dollar Road. It basically goes from the Dallas Divide to Telluride. It can get rough, and or muddy, or both. With good tires, good clearance, and 4wheel drive it is not hard. Usually has great views and golden aspens.
Have not been out photographing in a couple of weeks, it is so cold here! Looking back over some of my fall shots and missing the colors. This was taken just as the sun came up over the horizon in the San Juan Mountains.

A mix of aspens and scrub oaks in their fall colors decorate the hillsides near the Dallas Divide as cloud fragments from a recent rainstorm float past.

It was well worth the hour or so wait in the car while it rained. Once the rain stopped, beautiful clouds and cloud fragments floated over the colorful autumnal slopes of the San Juan Mountains.
This was completely unplanned.......30 minutes before this image was captured, I was 15 miles away and photographing something completely different. I kept looking over my shoulder to see what might be happening with the sky and light in the distance. I knew there was a chance for some color to show up in the sky at sunset, but the weather had been so crazy that there was certainly no guarantee of that. Two of us were shooing together and at the same time said...."We should go!!" We abandoned our compositions, jumped in the car and drove as fast as allowed to this spot. I grabbed my camera and tripod, found a very quick composition and the sky just ignited in front of me. The summits of a few peaks also caught some nice light. I think I giggled just a wee bit!!!!

Wow with so many autumn images being posted this last few weeks I am kinda intimated to post anything. This is from the Dallas Divide in Colorado in the Mt Sneffles Range. On our way here Kevin Pieper and I did not think there was going to be anything as there was nothing but fog but once we got high enough on the pass we can onto a winter wonderland.
An exciting morning of changing weather in the changing seasons.

Spring green aspens color the hillsides below the Sneffels Range at Dallas Divide near Ridgway, Colorado.
This is along the Dallas Divide area looking at the Sneffles Range of the San Juan Mountains. This spring morning was mixed with sunshine, rain showers and dramatic clouds. The sun peaked through for this shot light the dandelions up!!
This area is one of my favorite places and I truly enjoy visiting and photographing it. Each day presents a different prospective with the ever changing light and clouds. The one thing that always stays the same is the beauty of the mountains themselves!!
Thanks for any comments or favs.

Last Saturday I spent the afternoon and evening in the San Juan mountains. I have been inspired by the time spent with Jon Blake and Brad McGinley to take more images and spend more time in the beauty around me.
I first traveled to Molas Park and thought that the sunset was going to be perfect when a snow storm blew in and chased me from the area. I arrived in Ridgeway just in time to travel up Dallas Divide to view the Sneffles Range. I stood with the 20+ other photographers to catch the sunset there.
Thanks for any comments or favs that you may leave.

Autumn sunset light on Mount Sneffels (14,158 ft (4,315 m)) in Colorado's beautiful San Juan Mountains.
This is one of those locations where if I find it in the right light at peak fall color, my knees literally shake while I am taking the picture because it is difficult to believe the remarkable panorama before me is real. The fall color here is intense, and seems to go on forever as it unfolds into the Mount Sneffels Wilderness Area.
As always, thank you to everyone for your visits, comments and/or faves. Your time spent reviewing my work is appreciated.
It has been amazing as I catch up with everyone's excellent work on Flickr!

After being stuck at home for the better part of a year, Kevin Benedict, Sky Matthews and I were finally able to get back on the road for a little r and r shooting fall colors in Colorado. To be honest, there really wasn't too much rest or relaxation going on, but what could be better for the soul than seven days of chasing the light at five in the morning?
Prior to our trip, I really wasn't sure what to expect - fires were still raging throughout the western United States, Colorado was in the midst of an extended drought, most of the state had been hit by a freak winter storm less than a week before our visit, and for toppers, the forecast called for nothing but sunny skies throughout our trip. Despite the odds (and the elements) being stacked against us, I still felt very lucky to be able to travel at all this year. I know many have not been so fortunate due the pandemic.
This was my first fall trip to Colorado so I have little to compare it too. Reflecting back, the fires certainly caused there to be a bit more haze in the atmosphere, the drought may have caused some slight detrimental affect on the color in some locations, and there was nary a cloud in the sky during most of our trip (the day this picture was shot being a notable exception). Nevertheless, Colorado did not disappoint. In a word, it was incredible and if the state looks this nice with all the conditions stacked against it, I absolutely cannot wait to go back when the conditions are "favorable."
Anyway, this is a shot of the Dallas Divide near Ridgway, CO taken shortly after sunrise. Thanks for the read - please leave a comment and let me know what you think of the shot.
