Following on from dabbling with a bit of macro work with the EOS M I went out with a macro setup on the 5D Mk3 - a first! - despite owning the lens and convertor for years, I have never used them before. I wandered around Slaithwaite and along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath. The light was very poor. Trying to handhold, get depth of field and accurate focus in the gloom was really hard. I tried different settings and ended up at ISO 1000. Besides meeting loads of people I knew, including my oldest daughter, I got some politely curious looks. Shame about the light, critical as it is.

Dabbling in areas which were considered off-limits to women, Christine Salem decided that songs which were exclusively meant for men was her musical inclination. These ‘work’ songs known as Maloya, were only ever sung by male vocalists and previously only labourers, but with Salem’s risky venture into unknown territory she managed to turn this age old genre into music to be shared by all. Dabbling in more film photography (: Belated Merry X'mas to everyone!!
** This is the same place as the previous photo (:
Whenever I see a sunset sky like this I'm reminded how whimsical God can be. I imagine him dabblin paints into the firmament :)
Before crossing the border back into the states we stopped at Boundary Bay in hopeful attempt to see some snow owls before they made their migration back to the Artic. We were a little late in the season and were not lucky enough to see any stragglers, but we did see lots of water fowl. Mostly familiar birds but we did see a new species of Duck called the American Wigeon and of course a juvenile Bald Eagle.
This one won -- The flowers in the tub beside the wall were silhouetted fleetingly -- it was such a fleeting moment with the sun, clouds and wind all conspiring to make it hard. I inverted the original image - hope its OK.
This is the last of my dabbling shots. Next I'll share the diving shots.

Ok, so it's not real... but it should be, right?

And watch for the blog post about this!
I dabble a bit in genealogy, so finding the address of my great great grandfather on a Kansas City 1910 census was an exciting find. I ventured out (a 30 minute drive from my home) to see his house, to walk in the yard where he once lived. I decided that I wanted a memento of having been there so I stooped down and grabbed what I thought was a broken spindle. When I got home I took a better look at it, and this is what I found! To me it looks like a civil war toy soldier. It's made from a resin-like pastic. Does anyone know how old it could possibly be? Does anyone have any advice on how to figure it out?
Dabbled in some light painted product photography for the first time in quite awhile. The recipe is mostly the same:
- an iPhone set to a white image with the brightness dialled up; your source of illumination
- some black foamcore boards as a backdrop
However, this time, I tried a glass coffee table to bring in some reflections.
