The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976. Although no longer being purchased by the U.S. Air Force, improved versions are being built for export customers. In 1993, General Dynamics sold its aircraft manufacturing business to the Lockheed Corporation, which in turn became part of Lockheed Martin after a 1995 merger with Martin Marietta.

The Fighting Falcon's key features include a frameless bubble canopy for better visibility, side-mounted control stick to ease control while maneuvering, an ejection seat reclined 30 degrees from vertical to reduce the effect of g-forces on the pilot, and the first use of a relaxed static stability/fly-by-wire flight control system which helps to make it an agile aircraft. The F-16 has an internal M61 Vulcan cannon and 11 locations for mounting weapons and other mission equipment. The F-16's official name is "Fighting Falcon", but "Viper" is commonly used by its pilots and crews, due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as the Colonial Viper starfighter on Battlestar Galactica which aired at the time the F-16 entered service.

In addition to active duty in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, the aircraft is also used by the USAF aerial demonstration team, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and as an adversary/aggressor aircraft by the United States Navy. The F-16 has also been procured to serve in the air forces of 25 other nations. As of 2015, it is the world's most numerous fixed-wing aircraft in military service.

In 1989 a two-year study began regarding possible mid-life upgrades for the USAF's and European Partner Air Forces' (EPAF's) F-16A/Bs. The resulting F-16 Mid-Life Update (MLU) package was designed to upgrade the cockpit and avionics to the equivalent of that on the F-16C/D Block 50/52; add the ability to employ radar-guided air-to-air missiles; and to generally enhance the operational performance and improve the reliability, supportability and maintainability of the aircraft. Aircraft receiving this set of updates are designated F-16AM or F-16BM.

Development began in May 1991 and continued until 1997; however, the USAF withdrew from the MLU program in 1992, although it did procure the modular mission computer for its Block 50/52 aircraft.

The first of five prototype conversions flew on 28 April 1995, and installation of production kits began in January 1997. The original plans called for the production of 553 kits (110 for Belgium, 63 for Denmark, 172 for the Netherlands, 57 for Norway, and 130 for the USAF), however, final orders amounted to only 325 kits (72 for Belgium, 61 for Denmark, 136 for the Netherlands, and 56 for Norway). The EPAFs redesignated the F-16A/B aircraft receiving the MLU as F-16AM/BM, respectively. Portugal later joined the program and the first of 20 aircraft was redelivered on 26 June 2003, with another 20 going through the update incountry at this time. In recent years, Chile, Jordan, and Pakistan have purchased surplus Dutch and Belgian F-16AM/BM for their air forces.

Development of new software and hardware modifications continues under the MLU program. The M3 software tape was installed in parallel with the Falcon STAR structural upgrade to bring the F-16AM/BM up to the standards of the USAF's Common Configuration Implementation Program (CCIP). A total of 296 M3 kits (72 for Belgium, 59 for Denmark, 57 for Norway, and 108 for the Netherlands) were ordered for delivery from 2002–2007; installation is anticipated to be completed in 2010. A M4 tape has also been developed that adds the ability to use additional weapons and the Pantera targeting pod; Norway began conducting flying combat operations in Afghanistan with these upgraded aircraft in 2008. A M5 tape is in development that will enable employment of a wider array of the latest smart weapons, and the first aircraft upgraded with it are due to be delivered in 2009. In 2015 tape M7 was implemented.

Homage to Peter Powditch by Noel Thurgate. Oil and mixed media on board. Archibald Prize finalist.

The assemblage of materials and textures in the painting are a tribute to Peter's magician-like abilities with masonite, empty cigarette packets and other found objects.

Peter is a superb draftsman, especially when it comes to drawing the human figure. He is one of those rare artists able to combine the complexities of the largely unseen inner dynamics of the figure with the visible contours; and do it with incredible sensitivity and simplicity - just curved lines and straight lines.

As someone who has spent a lifetime drawing from the figure and teaching life drawing, I can confidently say that it is bloody hard! The entire composition of this painting is underscored by a similar interplay of and curved lines, Noel Thurgate, 2017.

The F-16A Block 15 increased the capacity for underwing and fuselage hardpoints. In total, the F-16 has eleven stations for munitions, avionics, and fuel tanks. The numbering of the stations begins on the port wingtip and ends on the starboard wingtips, with nine identified stations. The 1, 2, 8, and 9 stations carry either the AIM-9 Sidewinder or AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles (AAM). The 3 and 7 stations can be double-loaded (split into 3 and 3A, 7 and 7A) and carry a variety of AAMs, air-to-ground (AGM) missiles including anti-radiation (ARM) and anti-shipping (AshM) missiles, precision-guided munitions (PGM), Mk-82 and Mk-84 free-fall bombs, dispensers, and ECM pods. Stations 4 and 6 are wet, allowing for 370-gallon or 500-gallon fuel tanks, dispensers, AShMs and AGMs. The 5 station, or centreline, carries a 300-gallon fuel tank, ECM pods, and at one time a 30mm gun pod for the Air National Guard. The intake stations, 5L and 5R, are designated for EO/FLIR/TF pods. There is also the M61 Vulcan cannon mounted on the port fuselage. Later variants of the F-16 would include updated weapons systems and avionics, allowing the aircraft to carry the most up-to-date weapons and avionics currently in service.

Thailand approached the US in April 1985 to purchase of the F-16 and was considered a candidate for the F-16/79. However, the RTAF ordered 12 F-16A Block 15 OCU aircraft in 1987. Under the FMS program Peace Naresuan, eight F100-PW-220 Block 15 F-16As and four F-16Bs were ordered, with an additional six F-16A aircraft following shortly after. The first batch of F-16s was assigned to 103 Squadron at Korat AB. An additional 16 Block 15 OCU F-16A/Bs were ordered in July 1992 and assigned to No, 403 Squadron, replacing their aging F-5E/F aircraft. In July 2000, the RTAF received 16 surplus USAF Block 15 ADF fighters; in 2005, seven Block 15 OCU F-16A/Bs from the Republic of Singapore Air Force.

One of many stunning artist’s concepts by John Sentovic, for Convair/Astronautics, General Dynamics, primarily from the mind of Krafft Ehricke. This one featuring a manned interplanetary - possibly lunar in this instance, since it’s in the background, beckoning - spacecraft, with its return glider, IVO an Atlas manned space station, also with its attached return glider.

However, unless there were fairings, shrouds or something like that, with those blunt fuel tanks, exposed engine components, interstitial spaces & all kinds of different shapes, aerodynamic drag, buffeting and whatever else, especially during maximum dynamic pressure (max-q), would’ve been problematic I think.

Speaking of fairings, the booster may also be some sort of Atlas...variant...maybe?

Thank you Krafft Ehricke & Mr. Sentovic!

Hurricane Helene was a devastating tropical cyclone that produced a wide swath of damage and loss of life that extended from northwest Florida, US, where the storm made landfall on 26 September 2024, to Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina.

Hurricane Helene was closely monitored using Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar data to assess its wind field over the ocean surface. This technology plays a crucial role in understanding storm dynamics and predicting their impacts.

Satellite-based sensors, particularly those operating in microwave frequencies, can capture data on ocean surface wind speed and direction under various weather conditions. The Ocean Wind Field (OWI), derived from Sentinel-1, provided detailed estimates of wind vectors at 10 m above the ocean surface. This information is essential for meteorologists to analyse the storm's intensity and trajectory.
