Greek wooden fraternity paddles have a long history going back through the generations. The Greek paddles still have a place in reminding members of the ties binding the chapter together, through the bad times as well as the good. They remind members of the commitment they made to the group and act as a reminder of their loyalty to the chapter. Many buy paddles to remind them of their days with their initiating chapter and the duties of brotherhood/sisterhood that do not diminish but as in my sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, our membership is a commitment we have made for lifetime. We are committed to doing public service work in our communities.
They really aren't used for anything other than decoration to hang on your wall. Big brothers and sisters will brag to each other about how creative or big the paddle is. They're sort of expensive and the sorority paddles can get very elaborate and take a long time to make. They typically have the fraternity or sorority letters on them, the fraternity or sorority crest, and other images that might mean something special to the person.
