The man looks like he just stepped out of an old Japanese woodcut illustration, right down to the traditional grass raingear he is wearing. As to what it is he's carrying, I haven't a clue. If I had to guess, I'd say it is related to fishing in some way.
This photo is from an album Elstner Hilton compiled in Japan between 1914 and 1918.
Elstner was my spouse's uncle.
While Uncle Elstner sometimes annotated photos that required an explanation, he never dated the pictures. So all we know is they were taken between January, 1914 and December, 1918.

Made it as a tester, but it turned out pretty good! Have to bring in the arm hole a bit but I loooove that pleated crepe. Too bad it's discontinued :X I have enough left to make one more white skirt, and then a bunch of pink and maybe baby blue if I'm quick.

This is a Ruddy Duck getting ready for mating season. You can tell because he's put on his bright blue lipstick and his feathers are a deep ruddy brown. I'm always impressed with that bright blue bill they don for the mating season.
Found this in an old cedar trunk at my sister's house today. This is the dress my grandmother wore to my mother's wedding in 1950.
The day after, the dress hangs waiting to be packed away, perhaps never to be worn again.
