DPU units bring up the rear of this westbound stack train. It must have taken an hour and a half to reach Kelso 20 miles away at the bottom of the grade.

Three DPU's shove on the rear of BNSF train C-WTMPAM1-15AC at 30th St. as they train leaves KCT trackage and enters the BNSF Ft. Scott Sub for the trip south out of town. For the DP's we have one of the ten 25th Anniversary ES44AC's and a pair of SD70MAC's, one Heritage II and the other in BN's Executive paint scheme. The power on the head end of this train was an SD70MACe and an SD70ACe, making for a fairly interesting set of a power for a BNSF coal train these days, made up mostly of EMD's.

 

I generally avoid shooting DPU's, but I figured it was worth it this time with this set of power. This angle from up on the hill provided a nice broadside view. 5/14/22.

Dedicated Pushing Unit. Thrilling, huh? I often wait for the DPU as a heritage unit might be assigned that role.

Most trains on the RF&P have their DPUs in the middle of the train, but M422 is more likely than most other northbounds to have a rear-end DPU. This day's train is no exception, and provides an excuse for a bonus shot of the engine shoving its train north toward Baltimore.

A loaded tailings train works it way up hill with an SD40-2 on each end.

Something new Norfolk Southern is doing out of Norfolk, Va is putting mid DPU's on their hopper trains. Here NS 821 heads west under the coaling tower in Vicker, Va with a pair of DPU's.

UP 8526 pushes on the back of a westbound manifest climbing the grade to Erda, UT. This is literally the only train I've been able to catch since buying my DJI Mavic Pro last week, and even this one showed up with little warning.

Union Pacific 2539, 1982, 6851 and 6740 make a slow move out of the roundhouse lead track 116 and prepare to shove back into a 300 track as the train slowly starts to get built in the Departure Yard. UP 2539 will become the rear DPU once all the cars get into position, and UP 1982 would eventually lead this Portland bound Manifest train north in the early morning. As the train has to make a MoW Window on the Mojave Subdivision the train will head north at a good pace until the train derailed two cars at Caliente which slowed things down quite a bit.

The rear DPUs on Q-CHITAC6-15A snake through the yard lead at St. Anthony. They will perform work to the west of this location for a little while before continuing west.

DPUs (distributed power units) mid-train assisting NS 15T's head-end motive power with a 10,000 foot train, about to cross over the Potomac River into Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

Awaiting a route into the Houston Terminal, this pair of GEs sits on Main 1 of the Glidden Sub southwest of Houston in Sugar Land. Soon things will clear and they'll get their 18,000 tons of rock moving again.

Dynamic breaks howl as the rear DPU units on 38G enter the Allegheny Tunnel. The entire train is just about over the summit of the mountain at this point.

FXE 4067 brings up the rear of BNSF Z-SSECHC in Western Springs, IL.

Union Pacific's Missouri Pacific Heritage SD70ACe was the rear DPU on train Q-NPPR as it arrived at Proviso Yard in nice afternoon light. It's been a while since I last shot this thing, so it was worth a few frames. After all, the sun was shining and it was facing the correct way.

This is a CN train running on CP's tracks in the directional running area of the Thompson/Fraser canyons. There was, of course, another engine on the head end of this train. In this photo you are looking at the unmanned tail end DPU.
