BNSF 7105 serves as distributed power shoving a northbound on the Thayer South Sub near Jonesboro, AR.

Here's something that I never think about shooting: mid train distributed power. It's something I think is boring 99% of the time and today is no exception. There is nothing special about this ES44AC. 20 Years ago, running a 10 542' ft train on the Joliette subdivision would've been madness. Today? It's a regular thing.

Modern distributed power on CN dates back to the summer of 2002. CN leased BNSF 4898 and BNSF 4991 for testing on the Lac St-Jean subdivision to see what the technology was capable of. Surely enough, CN ordered their first set of DP-capable units in 2004 (CN 2200-2205). Unlike the common 2220-2344 series, the 2200-2205 were C44-9W's instead of ES44DC's. The 6 units were held captive on trains 362-363 and 368-369 between Garneau and Jonquière for two years and would rarely make appearances anywhere else on the system, except for their 92 days inspection in Montreal. During those two years, CN would keep on testing the units and the technology with constantly changing train marshalling and locomotive placement throughout the train. After a huge amount of broken knuckles and drawbars, communication failures etc, they finally managed to find a pattern where trains could run twice as long as they were before without needing two crews. It isn't always perfect, but it works. Instead of having a 3000' or 4000' ft train, they could now run 8000'+ ft trains on the Lac St-Jean Sub.

Distributed power is an incredible asset in modern railroading. The success it had on CN can be credited to the engineers at General Electric, who conceived the technology, and also to the men and women of the Northern Quebec Shortline from Garneau and Chambord. They were the first to tame the beast on this incredibly rough subdivision and paved the way for this technology to flourish system wide.

The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

If you see someone without a smile today, give ’em yours.

People always ask me how long it takes to do my hair. I don’t know, I’m never there.

I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb – and I’m not blonde either.

I’m not like a real person. I love being artificial. I think there’s a little magic in the fact that I’m so totally real, but look so artificial at the same time.

Those people who wake up and they’re just beautiful, they’re just born that way. Well, that ain’t me. I gotta work for everything I’ve got.

I describe my look as a blend of Mother Goose, Cinderella and the local hooker!

It's not broke but it is badly Dented. My very first Chromes of UP #844 were near a trestle on the UP Dent Branch (not here) while it was still an active route. I was busy backing away from the tracks as it neared. That must not have been long ago; I see on Google satellite an abandoned branchette to the disastrous Fort St, Vrain nuclear generating plant construction site, just northeast of here. I shot the image through a migrant shack window on the eastern plains. I found a copy of the DP RR locating map and cleaned it up as much as possible It does not appear that the line was abandoned an exceedingly long time ago but it seems entirely scrap. It must have helped the barn and ranch, next door, stay in business in it's day. That set me to compile research and study. This location, marked on the map is nearer the erstwhile St. Vrain River (badly wandering behind the barn) than the South Platte River but both are close to their confluence downstream past the barn. In reality, the St. Vrain has little flow when it merges with the South Platte. There are far too many gravel pits to fill on it's exit from the Rockies and onto the plains to here.

Granny's description of Great-Grandfather related that, upon homesteaading, had him working to cut ties and float them down the river to the construction camps by the St. Vrain on the original railroad line through this place. Boy do I have a lot to sort out and the research sources have the shakes. Fortunately, Google maps offers glimpses of the line north and south of the barn so I was able to extrapolate some information that follows.

I wanted to get a few shots of the new Russian prototypes.

The DP-28 was my favorite of the new prototypes. It's packed with the most detail and has an overall aesthetic that I love. The removable drum and overmolding are just the icing on the cake.

The Sedge Warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) is an Old World warbler in the genus Acrocephalus. It is a medium-sized warbler with a brown, streaked back and wings and a distinct pale supercilium. Sedge Warblers are migratory, crossing the Sahara to get from their European and Asian breeding grounds to spend winter in Africa. The male's song is composed of random chattering phrases and can include mimicry of other species. The Sedge Warbler is mostly insectivorous.

The song is varied, rushed and chattering, with sweeter phrases and some mimicry, typical of the Acrocephalus warblers. It is composed of phrases in random order, so that it is never the same. Male Sedge Warblers which have the widest repertoire mate with the largest number of females.

All Sedge Warblers spend winter in sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, and as far south as the eastern Cape Province of South Africa and northern Namibia. The route taken on the southward migration, and eventual wintering grounds, correspond to the birds' breeding grounds. Birds ringed in the United Kingdom and Netherlands are later found from south-west Iberia to Italy; birds from Sweden are recovered in central Europe and Italy; while Finnish birds are found in north-east Italy and Malta east to the Aegean region. Sedge Warblers from the former Soviet Union take routes via the eastern Mediterranean Sea and Middle East. Loss of wetland areas for feeding on migration, and the expansion of the Sahara desert, pose threats to the Sedge Warbler's breeding population. Birds begin leaving Africa in late February, fatten up at wetlands before and probably after crossing the Sahara, and arrive in Europe from March onwards. (wikipedia)

The reed beds and surrounding hedgerows in the East Coast Nature Reserve, Wicklow, were full of Sedge Warbler. Fantastic to see and hear so many. Taken from the south-facing hide.
