Little Jimmy had a really really spiders crawling on you kind of creepy feeling the minute they pulled into the train station and saw the Scarlett Hotel on the hill. Just like now when Nanny insisted Jimmy and his baby sister Hilda have a vigorous swim in the icy waters right after tea. Little Jimmy regretted stuffing himself with cream cakes when Nanny's attention was elsewhere...he'd heard that swimming after a large meal just wasn't done...

Another angle of the doom and gloom that was the Lennox Head fire on new years eve 2013. The fires encroached on the small coastal village of Lennox head in NSW, Australia. Flames in excess of 20m were recorded and over 770 hectares of bushland was destroyed. Fortunately no homes or lives were lost as over 80 firefighters per shift, with support from helicopters and water planes fought the fires.

Actually - Mount Ngauruhoe, used as a stand-in for the fictional Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Taken on a glorious day during one of my trips to Waihohonu last year.
The day before the demolition of blast furnace nr. 6 in Liége - Seraing (Belgium).
Untill 2014 this blast furnace provided work for thousands of peoples. Now that he is extinguished he looks like a gloomy tower of doom.
Many thousands of workers are doomed to unemployment in this already poor region.
This region with its heavy industry has fallen prey to globalization. Producers relocate to the low-wage countries where safety, the environment and labour costs are not taken as closely.
But however, he won't be there after tomorrow!

Avian flu severly impacted Heligoland's gannet population last year (not to mention bird populations in general far and wide!). While it was a relief to see them coming back, numbers are much lower than in previous years. Also, many birds still show blackened pupils, a telltale sign of avian flu. Following these birds for many years now, I wonder if the population manages to recover from such a dismal outlook..
Unfortunately, there is little one can do about it. But making sure to stay clear of dead birds, reporting infected and dead birds as well as spreading information about these outbreaks is probably a good start.

This little derelict house is doomed. It's sitting on prime real estate and will soon be demolished to make way for a Dollar General store. I'll hate to see it go.

A new company Firefly attempted to launch a much smaller, cheaper rocket last night at Vandenberg Space Force -- unfortunately they experienced (in their words) "An Anomaly" 2 minutes into flight and had to abort the mission over the Pacific Ocean.
Actually check that, significant portions of metal and insulation have actually floated to the ground just east of Santa Maria, now that's a little scary and is NOT supposed to happen.
Starting from the beginning when they delayed the launch an hour it was sort of doomed to failure.
My dictionary defines Anomaly as "Something abnormal; an irregularity" --
