Doesn't seem like this breed of duck looks up very often - they've always got their beaks down, rooting around in the muck, but it was nice to see this take a break and stretch her wings!

It doesn't always have to be Tuscany. A few kilometers south of Tuscany, there is the similarly charming region of Umbria. Here we were in the pitoresque village of Passignano sul Trasimeno and watched the beautiful sunset over Lago Trasimeno above the rooftops.

it doesn't matter what camera you have. You can have the most modern camera in the world but if you don't have an eye, the camera is worthless. Young people know more about modern cameras and lighting than I do. When I started out in photography I didn't own an exposure meter - I couldn't , they didn't exist! I had to guess :-)

It doesn't look like it with all that ice, but it was a very balmy day last Saturday. Temps were in the 50s up on the ridge, over 3,000 ft in altitude, and the hikers and bikers had come from all over to take advantage of the beautiful weekend. Down in the valley it was in the mid 60s by late afternoon. The ice falls were magical to see. Below is my sister and her husband in front of one of the falls.
I'm on vacation, but that doesn't mean I have a lot of time to be lazy. In fact, the first week I didn't have them at all and the second week starts off similarly.
Since I'll be busy filling up my firewood supply for most of the day today, I thought this photo of the little nuthatch was perfect.
I watched him for a while as he pounded the branch with brute force over and over again and the pieces just flew off in both directions.
I actually managed to catch one of them in the air.
This action shot also consoled me that the lighting conditions (and thus the image quality) were not really optimal that morning.
Ich habe zwar Urlaub, aber das heisst nicht, dass ich viel Zeit zum Faulenzen habe. Tatsächlich hatte ich die in der ersten Woche überhaupt nicht und die zweite Woche beginnt ähnlich.
Da ich mich heute die meiste Zeit des Tages damit beschäftigen werde, meinen Brennholzvorrat aufzufüllen, fand ich dieses Foto von dem kleinen Kleiber perfekt.
Ich hab ihm eine Weile dabei zugesehen, wie er immer wieder mit roher Gewalt auf den Ast eingehämmert hat und die Stücke nur so nach beiden Seiten davon geflogen sind.
Dabei ist es mir tatsächlich gelungen, einen davon in der Luft zu erwischen.
Dieser Action-Shot tröstete mich darüber hinaus, dass die Lichtverhältnisse (und damit die Bildqualität) an diesem Morgen nicht wirklich optimal waren.

It doesn't hurt to dream every once in a while.
I was really happy with this photo. Taking long exposures of boats on the water rarely works out well as they are continuously bobbing up and down, rocking side to side. You usually end up with a really blurry subject. This was a 30sec exposure on a really still Melbourne winter night. There wasn't a breathe of wind and the water was almost like a sheet of glass anyway. All bar 1 of the boats stayed perfectly still for the whole 30 seconds.
It doesn't need many words.. what is happening in Ukraine makes you sad and helpless.. to see the fear in children's eyes, the women who have to leave their husbands behind..Men who don't know if they will ever see their families again.We all know that from stories told by our grandparents..only that it also affects us now 😥

Doesn't life often feel like a continuation of climbing mountaintops and walking valley floors. We will hit our mountaintop moments where everything is going just how we want it to and then we will walk down in the lowest valleys. Other times the mountains are in the way and we feel there is no way around it. Life is hard if we are truly honest. It is filled with ups and downs and plenty of challenges. While we may feel on top of the world when we are at the top, the valleys humble us and remind us how small we are. So far this may seem like a bit of a downer to read, but there is encouragement. The King of the universe takes notice of you! Not just a quick glance either. God loves you and He knows you even though frankly humanity is very small in comparison to the whole universe. It is an encouraging thought that whether we are at the top of the mountain or the bottom of the valley that we are known and cared for by the Creator of everything and the King over everything!

Snow Street...
Who doesn't love a great snowstorm. i know i do...
A few weeks ago we had a huge snow storm, which blow through; giving me the opportunity to get out and photograph. The next morning after the storm had somewhat died down and the sun had just come up behind the heavy, thick clouds. the clouds acted like a giant soft box and diffused the ambient light and made everything look so ethereal..

Hope this doesn't offend anyone.
I have shown the beautiful more gentle side of yellowstone earlier but this shows the harsh side of it. The circle of life.
We found this coyote with a downed Elk. There were three coyotes but I never got a photo of them together. It was raining on and off the whole time we were photographing them. Eagles were circling but never landed. It was freezing but I couldn't leave. Sat there for 3hrs.
FYI this was taken from a legal distance. It was taken with a 500mm lens and is cropped. Someone turned us in to the ranger saying we were photographing Wolf and we were to close. He came and talked to us and found out it was coyote. Told us we knew what we were doing and were fine, to have fun.

Sometimes it doesn't matter which camera or lens you took a picture with, it is just the picture that counts :-)
Sometimes it doesn't matter how many pixel an image has, how beautiful it's rendered, how sharp it is and how the colors are.
Sometimes two colors and a few outlines are enough, to be just a nice or a story telling image.

It doesn't matter who you are and, what equipment you have, what we all need to do is learn how to use it. If you ask me, the lens is more important then the camera so, find out all you can about your lens. Do I make sence? What aperture is it best at , what distance from your subject does it work the best?
