1953 England DNA The "Secret Of Life"
25th April 1953 : Two Cambridge University scientists "James D Watson and Francis Crick" publish an article in Nature Magazine explaining the structure of DNA and that DNA is the material that makes up genes which pass hereditary characteristics in all life from one parent to another. They conclude that it consists of a double helix of two strands coiled around each other and could even be considered the "secret of life".
2003 Human Genome Project
25th April 2003 : The Human Genome Project to determine the sequence of chemical base pairs which make up DNA of the human genome consisting of 20,000-25,000 genes started in 1990 is published. The project started in the US with James D. Watson who was head of the National Center for Human Genome Research at the National Institutes of Health but over the next 10 years geneticists in China, France, Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom all worked together on the project helping the project end two years earlier than planned. One of the most important aspects of this research is it available to available to anyone on the Internet and not owned or controlled by any one company or government.
for Crazy Tuesday - Spiral(s)
When Peter's son was young, he wanted to know about DNA. So he asked his father, a chemist/biochemist/geneticist sort of a scientist, to explain. The result was that they demolished an old TV set and found the components that would help to describe it. The son now has that model, and Peter made another one for me!! The double helix creates 2 spirals attached by the bases across the middle that are made from various electronic bits and pieces.
The bands of colour from light refracted from spider webs makes me think of DNA sequencing for some reason. For the curious, check this picture:

Look ma, no bokeh! Don't worry, folks, I'm still here and this is still a Lucy photo.
Detail of “Digital DNA,” a 7-ft. tall egg sculpture made of circuit boards. Located at Lytton Plaza on University Ave., Palo Alto, CA, it was designed to recognize Palo Alto's role in the birth of Silicon Valley.

Mao wanted some some photos taken and was inspired by the speedo photography found in DNA Magazine. So we spent a few hours on a cold spring afternoon and took these photos. After which I went into photoshop and gave them artistic punch. Hours in the digital dark room they are ready. Woo hoo!

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule that encodes the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and many viruses.

April 25th is DNA Day, and here is my version of a double helix. I have been wanting to build one for years, but just finally found a good use of the rounded 1x2 plate (shown in gray) and when used with a standard 1x2 plate (shown in reddish brown), they make a nice sweeping curve that holds a uniform curve. Two opposing spiraling curves form the double helix. The bases connecting them together do their part in keeping the structure from collapsing, as there is no central vertical axis to hold it together.
Being a molecular biologist by profession, I had to make sure that the accuracy of 10 base pairs per helical turn is portrayed correctly. The 4 bases (A, C, G, T) are denoted by their unique color, as normally shown in text books. A pairs up with T and G with C.
I'll try a few other iterations and I'll post them if they turn out any better.
If you are wondering why April 25th is DNA Day, well it's the day when the famous James Watson along with Francis Crick and less famous yet as important Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin published papers on the structure of DNA back in 1953.
Note: If you are planning on trying this out for yourself, I would recommend using axles through the pin connectors, as it will prevent any unintended twist in the base pairs.

Light painting Perth's DNA Tower. When looking around for places to photograph in Perth whilst at a conference, I came across the DNA Tower in Kings Park. Deciding it needed some light painting treatment, I brought along my LED Lenser P7QC and a diffuser.
After a couple of test runs, 4 takes to get the exposure right, and a few mozzie bites, I worked out I had climbed up or down 1212 steps. Not surprisingly my legs were a bit sore the next day!
On reflection, I should have done a bit more light painting around the base of the tower, but as Perth is a 8000km round trip from Brisbane, I doubt I'll be back for another attempt for a while.
Lighting: Ledlenser P7QC with diffuser and red (up) and green (down) followed by a white wash of the structure for 30secs.
Post processed from RAW in Adobe Lightroom 6.
Previously I had this species listed as Tyromyces vitellinus but recent DNA testing now identifies it as a Wrightoporiopsis sp.

Scanned wet cyanotype.
DNA - the double helix structure discovered by Watson and Crick in the 1950s - is the mother of all inheritance.
Photogram (Blomsterbasilika, Ocimum basilicum 'Belmona') and dig neg hybrid on handmade cotton rag paper from India (A3).
Classic Jacquard two part cyanotype sensitizer with a touch of Potassium Dichromate (6 drops of 1% solution to 5 ml sensitizer to boost contrast). Turmeric border. Vinegar sprinkle and cling film.
Exposed in my UV light box for 10 min.
Developed in H2O and Citric Acid and finally dipped in H2O2 for "instant gratification" :-)
My entry for World Cyanotype Day 2023 (which is today, Sept 30!) - theme “INHERITANCE”.
What do you do on a rainy day: do a re-edit of a picture of last year. This is a staircase in the building where I used to work. It represents DNA, where the staircases reflects the double helix and the lights are the individual basepairs :-)
In about one month I will start with my new job, but I will miss the unique staircase in the hospital in Nijmegen. It's designed to reflect the double helix of the DNA-strand. The lights, which change colors, corresponds to the four different basepairs which are the building blocks of our genetic code. I already made a B&W picture before, but now I arrived earlier before the main lights were turned on to show the "basepair lights" more clearly.
An essential tool for the solving of crime, DNA is unique to an individual, so long as appropriate forensic techniques are used to avoid contamination. Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine- the four bases.. HMM
Ontem eu fui tentar fazer um carimbo no Deborah Lippmann e deu tudo errado. :P
Fica discreto, mas aparece bem o efeito multichrome do show!
Ai tem 1 camada de Nero DNA Italy (meu preto favorito);
1 carimbada com show;
