The castle was built in the 1400s by the Venetian Querini family on the ruins of the ancient acropolis. There are three churches inside, the one shown here is called "Virgin Mary of the Castle" and was constructed in 1853. In Greek mythology, Astypale was the sister of Europa.
It seems like this will be the year this tree finally makes fruit. It is a hybrid between an American and Japanese plum tree. It has so many flowers, and also thorns.
More evidence that Portra does not age well... this 2008 400NC ended up having the colors of Ultramax on steroids. After a badly needed black and white conversion, it looks a bit like T-MAX P3200. This was a test of a newly acquired monopod for handholding the heavy Sonnar lens. I really was pushing it at 1/30 with the teleconverter, most of the shots had some shake.
The odd colors are a combination of the tungsten film and also a result of the 120 roll not being tightly wound enough. Handmade masks, not being perfectly straight, lend an artistic effect that can sometimes work well with an image.
When people construct bridges, it is the result of a success. When nature makes them, it is the result of a failure. Roots in wet ground that couldn't hold on in a wind. It's interesting to think about how our own personal failures resulted in a bridge to access something that we otherwise would not have.
There was a beautiful woodpecker working at the base of this tree, but it was too small to be picked up well in the picture.
You can tell that this fallen tree is still alive from the thin vertical branches that emerge from the trunk.

meant to redigitize an existing frame, picked the wrong one, but I like this composition too (still struggling with blue grain in shadows)
