Attempt at a DIY Beauty Dish. The results are rather impressive, and we'll now use these guys in the field!

the third incarnation of the pinholga's shutter. i got the idea of using a floppy disk from found photograph's this blog entry. this one is customized for the holga though. it was much easier and faster to make than the last version:

1. cut off the part of the disk that has the spring-loaded protector. the disk i got had some soft paper coating inside which i removed as well.

2. make a small cut here and bend the corner up to make a small "handle" that can be used to push the floppy door open. i glued a little piece of foam there to make it less slippery for the cable release.

3. i decided to enlarge the opening as much as possible. i just used a pocket knife to cut away some of the plastic that's blocking part of the opening. this may not be necessary if you decide the existing opening is wide enough for your setup.

4. mount the shutter to the camera. i taped strips of the foam which's self-adhesive on one side, to the edges of the disk so it leaves some room to let the shutter slide open and close. then i just taped the whole thing onto the camera. i added the foam piece on top to block any light that might get to the pinhole when the shutter is closed.

5. you can use the shutter the way it is by just sliding the protector open with your hand, but i decided to use a cable release. i had some ideas about mounting it but in the end i just taped it onto the shutter. we'll see if it lasts or not.

This is a DIY version of the famous Hasselblad X-Pan. It has the lens from a 1920's Ansco folder and the body of a broken Chinon SLR. The format is 24x60mm.

1 Silicone Hose Intercooler Coupler Tube Pipe ($3~10 from the bay with different sizes)+ 2 clamps and you can mount all your old barrel lenses (9x12, 4x5, 5x7 or 8x10 etc) or enlarger lenses on the bellows.

The jacket is a DIY project of mine, finally it is ready to use :) Originally it was way too big for me and the colour was dark and a bit green maybe. So I bleached and reshaped it and now it is wearable again.

I always like to have a good old rummage through the haberdashery’s remnants box & the other week I found a lovely piece of woven fabric for £2 that I just had to have.

It’s two-tone with an ethnic feel pattern so I thought it would make a really funky reversible shawl wrap.

I copied the measurements of an old vintage 80s shawl wrap that my mother-in-law gave me some years ago.

This DIY is ridiculously simple & straightforward…

*Find some fabric that you like!

*Cut your fabric into a square; my square measured 60” by 60”.

*Zigzag around the raw edges or leave edges raw if you want a fray-trim.

*Fold the square in half & cut a slit measuring 30” along the fold.

*Zigzag or reinforce in some other way around the end of the slit to prevent the fabric from ripping any further when worn.

*If you’d like a neater appearance you could even add a plain or a decorative border trim all the way around the edges.

Get a free PDF for making this bunting right here. Cut out the lettering using Adobe Illustrator and a Silhouette digital cutter, or choose from several colors to print.

So I finally bit the bullet and bought some chemicals to develop my own colour negatives. This is partially for financial reasons (i.e. it works out quite a bit cheaper), and also I was curious as to how difficult it would be.

Turns out it was really simple (arguably less hassle than black and white), and the thing that I was most worried about (the temperature control) was not a problem.

The colours from what I have scanned so far seem fairly accurate (at least for me), so maybe this is the way forward?

DIY Bristol Board Seamless

Yes - it's messy.

And why is there a sock under the camera??? (Looking at you, Toby)

But it's mine. And I don't have to set it up every day like I did when I was shooting in the kitchen. And I love it!

FWIW - it's your standard 10x10 bedroom, with the camera on tripod (far right) backed up against the closet and I'm standing in the doorway.

There's a pair of flashes on each side - one behind the umbrella and the other with a small softbox. The light behind the umbrella doesn't affect the final shot but does help the camera to focus - and obviously to take this picture (with my iPhone).

DIY cardboard lightbox: white broadcloth diffusion material; 2 craft foam sheets connected under plexiglass for background; Nikon SB-24 set on manual at 1/16 power; Cactus V2 trigger for wireless flash. Standing on foot supplied with SB-800 flash.

NOTE: putting the Cactus V2 hotshoe foot (in the image, it's under the SB-24 flash) in the stand supplied with the SB-800 (and also available separately) is NOT a good idea. The connection is poor and the Cactus foot all too easily slides out.
