It is the simplest of principles, it is the most difficult of principles.

Let us first be clear on what unity does not mean: it does not mean uniformity. Unity is oneness. Diversity lends strength to any group of people. Unity binds together diverse elements so that, by virtue of their many strengths, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Me, You and Him.

People these days like to toss the word "Diversity" around, as if it were something new to our planet. I grew up during the early nineteen forties, and one of my favorite toys was the topsy-turvy doll. A gift from my grandmother - to my sister and myself - we spent hours playing with them. Over many decades, and many moves from place to place, the dolls were lost. A thoughtful daughter (Snowshoe Photography Alaska) gifted me with a replacement a few years ago. It brings back fond memories, and a reminder that my family knew about "diversity" before it became a political thing.

Definition of diversity

1: the condition of having or being composed of differing elements : VARIETY especially : the inclusion of different types of people (such as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization

Thought the best way to show how much the Tortoise bug - Eurygaster testudinaria - can vary in colour and patternation was to do a collage!

LA: Saxifraga rotundifolia

EN: Round-leaved saxifrage

DE: Rundblättrige Steinbrech

HU: Kereklevelű kőtörőfű

This plant is again endemic to the mountain areas of central and southern Europe.

It prefers valleys and moist ground, so the plant does not have the usual Saxifraga succulent look.

Done by students, for the students. Found on a brick wall, at an inner-city school in Toronto.

Hip shot, zone focus. Can you zone focus at f2? ‍I pushed the shutter speed up to 1/500s as they were walking, dropped the aperture to wide open and guesses the ISO. Lucky shot.

Not too many newsstands are left. Not too many newspapers are still circulating. However this stand off Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles has a selection of Spanish language periodicals.

The Sonoran Desert National Monument contains magnificent examples of untrammeled Sonoran Desert landscape. This National Monument is the most biologically diverse of the North American deserts, and the monument captures a significant portion of that diversity. The most striking aspect of the plant community within the monument is the extensive saguaro cactus forest. The monument contains three distinct mountain ranges, the Maricopa, Sand Tank and Table Top Mountains, as well as the Booth and White Hills, all separated by wide valleys. The monument also contains three Congressionally designated wilderness areas and many significant archaeological and historic sites, and remnants of several important historic trails.

Visits to the Sand Tank Mountains, located south of Interstate 8, requires a Barry M Goldwater Range permit. The permit is free, but requires the recipient to watch a 13 minute safety video. Permits are valid for one year, from July 1 through June 30 of the following year. Permits can be obtained in person at BLM's Arizona State Office and Lower Sonoran Field Office.

On a dark, dreary early summer day, this patch, glowing with vibrant green growth caught my eye and drew me in. It's a little boggy area that I think might be fed by a cooled thermal seep on a rise above the Gibbon River. In the near distance (not visible from this angle) are "bobby socks" trees with tell-tale white bases that get that way when inundated by thermal waters full of toxic minerals that kills the trees.

In addition to its almost radioactive appearance, this little mound shows incredible diversity of growth, with recognizable leafy, apparently deciduous plants, flowering plants, forbs and grasses, mosses and lichens. It's a fascinating spot along Yellowstone's Grand Loop Road.

The Three Cruise-Ship Graces at Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda

'Models' unknown

Not a 'candid' but certainly by chance. I was beach combing and these young women were taking photos of each other, two at a time, but as I passed by, they asked to me use their phones to take a photo of all three of them together. As I had my camera with me, I then asked them if I could also take a shot of them on my camera too, and, to my surprise, they happily agreed.

I think they said they were on a cruise-ship which had recently docked. This is a popular beach area for cruise-ship passengers because they can get bussed there direct from the quayside at the Bermuda Dockyard ('West End'), and it also has proper changing facilities and, occasionally, a life-guard.

I loved the contrast between them, their different sun-specs, their happy posing styles, the humorous friendship between them, and their spontaneity. I was also really pleased they didn't go for the now almost universal 'victory' gestures for this kind of group photo.

I didn't even ask their names, and I don't remember asking them if they were friends back at home, or whether they had made friends on their cruise. But I just wish I'd also asked them if I could do a set of shots of them instead of just this single picture. I think I was afraid of seeming leery. But they were cheerfully friendly as you can see, and looking back, I'm sure they'd have agreed. Why does one always think of such things afterwards when it's too late? I've never had a similar chance since, and doubt I'll get another similar chance.
