The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

The Space Shuttle Discovery soars skyward from Launch Pad 39B on Mission STS-64 at 6:22:35 p.m. EDT, September 9, 1994. On board were a crew of six: Commander Richard N. Richards; Pilot L. Blaine Hammond Jr.; and Mission Specialists Mark C. Lee, Carl J. Meade, Susan J. Helms and Dr. J.M. Linenger. Payloads for the flight included the Lidar InSpace Technology Experiment (LITE), the Shuttle Pointed Autonomous Research Tool for Astronomy 201 (SPARTAN201) and the Robot Operated Processing System (ROMPS).

A statue and memorial to Meriwether Lewis's Newfoundland who endured The Corp of Discoveries expedition to the Pacific coast and back in 1804-1806.
As a dog lover this touched my heart. This particular tribute was at the impressive Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural, and Education Center in Salmon Idaho. Sacajawea was from this area and helped guide them thru here. The Expedition probably would not have survived, nor completed their task without her help.
An image I took of a beautiful statue to this special woman in comments.
Have a wonderful day!

We then discovered that this couch was a great backdrop and had good lighting. Being the greedy photo whore I am, we started a mini-shoot right there in the lobby of the Delano...

The rising sun and some scattered clouds provide a picturesque backdrop for the Space Shuttle Discovery as it travels along the Crawlerway toward Launch Pad 39A in preparation for the STS-82 mission. The Shuttle is on a Mobile Launch Platform, and the entire assemblage is being carried by a large tracked vehicle called the Crawler Transporter. A seven-member crew will perform the second servicing of the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during the 10-day STS-82 flight, which launched on February 11, 1997.

The Crawler Transporter brings the Space Shuttle Discovery on its Mobile Launcher Platform into position at Launch Pad 39B, following rollout from the Vehicle Assembly Building. The Fixed Service Structure and the Rotating Service Structure, permanent parts of the launch pad, are left of the Shuttle. Discovery and its crew of five lifted off on July 13, 1995, on a satellite deployment mission, STS-70. Meanwhile, sister ship Atlantis was poised for launch from Pad 39A on a mission to rendezvous and dock with the Russian Mir Space Station. Atlantis lifted off on STS-71 on June 27, 1995.

Incidental discovery…
Ever since my visit yesterday and despite the delicious moments spent in the afterhours I am in a pensive mood …
All of them surely were lovers at a given moment in time.
And then came the darker days. As the beloved one passed away.
As time went by, possibly he dared to look ahead, and then again he was afraid.
He was shivering at the solely thought of future, anxious to perturb and to distress.
I am an old man now, thinking of years gone by.
I am an old man now, musing on the cruelty of time; my body is worn out, the strength has vanished.
I am an old man now, and yet deep inside resides that good-looking, fearless and audacious fellow.
I recall the sweetness, the laughter and the daintiness and my broken hearth hastens unexpectedly.
Lovers, in the aftermath of fierce, ardent passion and lovingness, all that remains are sun kissed and shatterproof traces.
Visible marks and evidence; to cherish what was lost, to preserve for ever after, to be able to let go …

I had an amazing photo shoot tonight for my child portrait of the day. My co-worker's daughter Lacy has Downs Syndrome, and she has one of the most energetic and contagious smiles. I knew when I started this challenge that I wanted to have a portrait of her as part of the "children" week.
I took over 75 photos in just a matter of minutes as she danced and explored around the field near my home. It was very hard, but I had to select just a couple to post, so I chose two from when she was discovering some of the small flowers in the field. Even though I wanted to capture her smile, and did in other frames, these two were my favorites.
I need your help deciding which of these two should be the "submission" for the day! Weigh in on your choice of this one or the other. Thanks!

This photo placed 3rd in the Digital Photography School portrait contest. Thanks to all those that voted to help make this happen!
The second try works like a charm as the Space Shuttle Discovery lifts off from Launch Pad 39B on Mission STS-56 at 1:29:00 a.m., EDT, April 8, 1993. First attempt to launch Discovery on its 16th space voyage was halted at T-11 seconds on April 6. Aboard for the second Space Shuttle mission of 1993 was a crew of five and the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science 2 (ATLAS 2), the second in a series of missions to study the sun's energy output and Earth's middle atmosphere chemical makeup, and how these factors affect levels of ozone.

I took this of the Discovery Park (or West Point) Lighthouse a couple years ago but never posted it. I always seem to go to the lighthouse during mid-day but maybe one day I'll head there for sunset. I also seem to forget the steepness of the hill that goes down to the lighthouse. You can drive there but the parking lot is pretty small and it's always nice to walk through Discovery Park.

My boss treated my colleagues and me to an afternoon at the Udvar-Hazy Center, which is the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's annex at Dulles Airport. I've been there many times, and it's always a treat. I wish I'd had my real camera with me, though.
This is the Discovery orbiter. This is probably my favorite thing in the whole museum. My boss's dad was heavily involved in the early space program, and my boss himself had summer jobs at Kennedy Space Center, so he gave us a guided tour loaded with tons of info I didn't know about the shuttle program. My boss is pretty boss.
Forzen treat. It looked like it had fruit and who knows what in it. He sure liked it and only let it go when he was run off by a bigger guy.
Space Shuttle Discovery at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum near Dulles Airport in Chantilly,Va. Sometimes I can be heard audibly grumbling about all the stuff hanging from the rafters, but in this case it made for some pretty cool shadows!
Had to work all through the holiday, but am off this weekend and will catch up tonight!
