Tlaloc era el dios de la lluvia y del relámpago entre los aztecas. Se lo distingue por sus "ojos saltones" y por sus dientes de jaguar. Su parte de jaguar deriva de la cultura Olmeca, cuyo dios de la lluvia era representado como un hombre-jaugar.
Algunos investigadores piensan que el mito fundamental de la creación entre los olmecas hablaba de la cópula entre una mujer y un jaguar, de cuya unión nacieron los olmecas, literalmente, "pueblo del jaguar".
Tlaloc era conocido como "el proveedor" porque en su poder estaba la producción de lluvia que hacía crecer el maiz. Era el señor de los fenómenos atomosféricos y de los espíritus de las montañas.
