Diamond Beach, Iceland

And they said it would be heaving with photographers - well don't tell anyone, but I was there all night and after about 10pm I saw nobobdy else but my travel companions.

At this time of year, it never really gets dark in Iceland. Sunset at about 11.30pm, sunrise at about 3am, and in between is a twilight which it's perfectly possible to shoot in. Which is what I did. I wasn't about to waste a moment of shooting this magical scene.

This black sand beach is situated next to Jokulsarlon, a glacial lagoon which collects icebergs as they break away from the glacier. Some will stay in the lagoon, while others head out to sea through a short waterway, before being washed up on the beach by the tide. And there they sit and melt, making a dramatic contrast against the black sand. It was mesmerising. Single blocks of ice held my attention for long periods as they slowly changed form. There was a hint of colour in the sky which teased us, and the waves were hypnotic.

I filled half a memory card with shots that night. It was unforgettable.

Diamond Dove at Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver, Canada.

Native to Australia, diamond dove (Geopelia cuneata) predominantly exists in areas near water but which are lightly arid or semi-arid in nature, and that being Central, West and Northern Australia. They are one of Australia's smallest pigeons along with the peaceful dove.

The Red Arrows commencing their 'Diamond Bend' display from the 2015 season, taken at The Scottish Air Show in Ayr, Scotland.

The display line was further out than usual due "to the sensitivity of the Shoreham crash" and the only option was shooting into the sun, this lead to quite a washed-out sky. As the smoke was white for this part of the display I opted for monochrome processing for this shot to really bring out those gorgeous smoke trails. As always, the Reds were inch perfect in their precision and it was a fabulous show!

Lovely neighborhood privacy fence, still trying to decide did they make this fence with Xs or Diamond designs. I guess it starts with diamonds so diamonds it is.

Okay it's not an actual diamond, it's a double-terminated crystal. It's referred to as a diamond because of its clarity and well formed faces. I love this little crystal because I worked really hard for it. The Herkimer diamond mines are located in Herkimer New York. Many years ago I went with my family and we worked all day with a hand tool to slam at the rocks and try to find a "diamond." It was hard work but fun when we actually discovered some crystals. This one is about a 1/4" across.

An empty Conrail ballast train approaches the diamond at Westfield MA on the Boston & Albany line on 13 July 1984. The matched SD50 trio 6738-6737-6739 is enroute to the Lane & Son quarry northwest of town, which at one time was a major supplier of ballast for the railroad.

A Sunday morning HWSZT train comes to the diamond in Linton. In town, they will drop the two lead SD40-2's and then head to Switz City to work the interchange.

A bit of a blue hour shot even though it was much longer after the sunset.

This water feature was sadly shut, but managed to get a composition from outside the railings to get the viewpoint I wanted. -

It is challenge to try not to blow the highlights in the water fountain but also get the rest of the scene exposed.

Diamond Firetails (Stagonopleura guttata), west of Guildford, central Victoria, Australia. While looking for raptors last weekend, I was really happy to find this pair of Diamond Firetails eating some grasses/seeds on the side of a small road bridge. Unfortunately, this image is an extreme crop taken in the afternoon through heat haze rising from the bitumen road, so the conditions were not ideal. However, I was very happy to see these birds which are listed as vulnerable, and capture eye contact from both birds in the one image. This is only the second time we have seen them in this area.

Sculpted and faceted remnants of the Vatnajökul Glacier are brought to rest by the tides on a black sand beach near Jökulsárlón, Iceland. Earlier in the day bright sun sparkled off of massive icebergs as Arctic Terns wheeled and plunged into the frigid waters of the nearby lagoon, but as the afternoon wore on and thoughts turned to our evening repast, a thick, low layer of cloud enveloped the landscape. The once glittering ice now glowed eerily amongst the waves as a few straggling people wandered about, unable to stop taking in the sight of these ghostly beautiful remnants of ancient water frozen from a long-gone time.

To avoid having to book accommodation during high season, our family rented a camper van, which had the side-effects of giving us one burner for dinner, and also ensuring that we would spend maximum amounts of time with each other within a relatively confined space. The boys responded to the latter by jumping out at every opportunity and racing about with abandon. At this particular stop, they excavated large, nearly fathomless holes in the dark beach, and amused themselves by trying to climb and balance upon the tops of the mid-sized icebergs. These larger ones were closer to the water's edge, logical since the smaller ones are moved more easily up the beach by the waves. Predictably, they slipped off and fell in the water, and so once the clouds shrouded out the sun and the temperatures dropped, they retreated to the van to warm up and sip hot soup. While I, on the other hand, photographed the ice and milked the last remnants of feeling from my fingers.
