It's important to design in context. In other words, the environment in which the design is produced should, as closely as possible, match the context in which the final product will be used.

In this case the development team was based in a heritage centre (think museum/visitor centre) in Brighton.

We made a special effort to test the application with touch screens as this was to be the delivery medium for our kiosk software.

This is an old site I have about programming I did, I'm always trying to hone my skills as a designer, you never know enough.

me at my old job (1994-2009) ¬

I was tagged by Jude's Jewels to come up with a picture

and 16 things about myself.

16 things about me:

╠ sign: pisces; year of the dragon §

╠ married since 2002.

╠ I grew up in Baton Rouge, LA and Boulder, CO.

╠ Myers-Briggs : INFJ

╠ I love colors, light and contrast.

╠ I love plants and animals; especially cats. We share our house

║ with 3 cats, fish, and many many happy

║ houseplants. We garden in the summer, but would love to live

║ somewhere warm and tropical where we can garden all year.

╠ I miss the ocean; a lot. Colorado is very pretty, but most of my

║ favorite places in the world are seaside. I am drawn to islands,

║ especially islands in the pacific, namely Hawaii. I was surprised to

║ find out that both my mother and father had relatives that lived in

║ Oahu. I dream about Hawaii frequently.

╠ I am passionate about music. My favorite sounds are the ocean

║ surf and my cats' purr. I am listening to music almost all the time.

║ In my car, in my office at work, while reading, etc. I spent a large

║ part of my life heavily involved with music. I was privately trained

║in classical music and theory for over 10 years, with primary

║ emphasis on the oboe and flute.

╠ I've been making things for as long as I can remember. I think it's

║ in my genes and a result of growing up as an only child. (I had to

║ be creative to keep myself entertained.) Lately I have enjoyed

║ making beaded flowers and beaded miniatures of things I like.

╠ I love to read. (mostly non-fiction)

╠ I enjoy focus, concentration and contemplation. I appreciate the ║perspectives and mental challenges that buddhism

║ and other philosophies offer.

╠ I am very shy, introverted, and often feel awkward or anxious in

║ social situations which makes it difficult to make new friends.

╠ I dislike and try to avoid conflict; but am quick on the defense.

╠ I am kind of a computer geek. I've always like GUI stuff, but not

║ programming. I like working with dhtml and CSS, and I even

║ learned VRML for fun (a long time ago.) My dad was a

║ programmer, so I've been around pc's since the first compaq

║ "portable." (The 50lb suitcase with the 5 inch green

║ screen and 2k hard drive.)

╠ I am movie-illiterate. I've seen like 50 movies in my entire life;

║ really. I have nothing against movies, I just don't watch that many.

║ I do love a good documentary though; and I can probably recite

║ any Seinfeld episode word for word.

╠ I worked at the same place for 15 years.

║ Since I worked for a small company, I was able to create several

║ different "jobs" throughout the years, to help the business

║ grow and to further my knowledge as well. Including but

║ not limited to : database/SQL and point-of-sale implementation

║ and management, webmaster, online sales and shipping,

║ ordering of music, organization of products, etc. I worked for an

║ independently owned new and used music and book store. I

║ worked mainly with record albums (vinyl) and cd's. With the

║ awesome employee discount I was able to collect a lot of music

║ and books unique to my interests throughout the years.

╙ I have since moved on.╜

The Amsterdam Tattoo Museum of Henk “Hanky Panky” Schiffmacher.

The museum was started on 05 November 2011 at Plantage Middenlaan 62, but after about a year it became known that a conflict had arisen between Schiffmacher and his financial partner, who went bankrupt. As a result Schiffmacher was not allowed to enter the museum and recover his collection. The museum in Van Woustraat is a pop-up gallery, opened on 28 February 2013. A permanent location is being looked for.

Schiffmacher’s tattoo shop is a minute’s walk from here at Ceintuurbaan 416.

Update: the museum at Plantage Middenlaan is closed, see www.parool.nl. The extended story is in the paper edition of Het Parool of Wednesday 20 March 2013.

This office & archives building is important in more than one respect. Here's an article in Dutch that describes how the LDS archives have been offering local archives (also in NL) to digitize all their birth, marriage and death certificates. However widely welcomed, this effort caused upheaval when it became clear that the LDS church uses these data to posthumously baptize these citizens so to increase their database of 'followers'...

Last week I went to the Dentist again and when I was all prepped up to have drills and a spit-suck-o-mat penetrating my egg-shaped head, I thought to myself, why not try to capture the essence of a Dentist visit in one single photo...

I'm not sure at all if I've managed to achieve that ambitious goal, but I like the result enough to upload it to Flickr anyway :)

In 2001, we had started a small company named the "Friends Online", a time when Orkut was not a common name among the youngsters. We all had just graduated from school (12th / HSC) and wanted to do something in the summer vacation!!

It was a website where you could make your own web-page with little bits of information about you and you could share this information with your friends and also make new friends online. It had many bells and whistles; was programmed in ASP (yes, UNIX was once unknown to me) and had a small 'Live Help' thingie that assisted new people through the website with mouse-over information about links and buttons... a live web-chat... etc. I guess it was one of the first DHTML enabled websites to come out of Ahmednagar.

The initial idea was to run it with a small fee from the members, but later we decided to offer it for free... and let the advertisements pay for the bills.

Yet, despite of the publicity, PR and stuff, we hardly got a few people's attention. Looking back, I realize now, that in 2001, when people were paying 30 bucks or more for an hour of Internet access in Ahmednagar, not many would be interested just because of the prohibitively high access rates! Then again, Internet was pretty new for us town folks and not many cared about it... hmm... just bad timing.

Anyway, it was one of my best times with my buddies! We sat all night coding new features, took loooong walks discussing on what else can be done on the project... fought over little details -

"120 pixels wide"

"NO! 150!"

"blah, too wide"

"heck!"

Now we all lead very different lives, each one in a separate place, in a separate lifestyle... none of use would had believed if someone told us we'd see this day!

(From left Tanmoy Chakraborty, Baljyot Singh Ranu, Saleem Khan, Joydeep Sengupta, Harshad Sharma)

Heh, its funny - my name is printed as Harshad Mehta - because those days, his scandals were the top news and every time I mentioned my first name, someone would involuntarily speak the wrong last name for me!!

Anyway, enjoy! More photos from Allahabad on the way.

Dear Peter:

Although we missed your lunch suggestions, we thank you for your interest in

our Art Director position at Sugar Publishing. You are among many

interested and qualified applicants for the job.

Just as we¹ve asked our editorial and video producer candidates to submit

writing samples and concept videos, respectively, we are asking candidates

interested in our Art Director position to complete an assignment. The

purpose is to not only assess the breadth and depth of your skills and

capabilities, but also to get a sense of your creative style.

Background:

* Your goal is to produce compelling creative assets that both highlight and

leverage the content and editorial of the Sugar Publishing Network to keep

our readers and viewers engaged

* The Sugar Publishing Network currently has 4 sites (and we¹re launching 4

more in the near future: BuzzSugar, FitSugar, GeekSugar, GiggleSugar):

> * PopSugar.com (celebrity gossip entertainment news)

> * FabSugar.com (fashion)

> * DearSugar.com (advice)

> * TeamSugar.com (community)

* Our demographics (your audience):

> * Over 87% are between the ages of 18 and 35

> * 36% spend 20+ hours a week online

Assignment:

1. Redesign TeamSugar.com homepage

> * Use existing TeamSugar.com content to create a layout that:

>> * Maximizes usability through design and organization of content (text,

>> images, banner ads, etc.)

>> * Makes most efficient use of space

> * Photoshop submissions are adequate

2. Design 3 banner ads

> * Ads should promote our new site, BuzzSugar.com, which is to ³Entertainment

> Weekly² what PopSugar.com is to ³Us Weekly²

>> * Content on site will cover tv, movies, books, music, etc.

>> * Features will include:

>>> * What to Tivo

>>> * What to Netflix

>>> * What do download, MP3s of the day

>>> * Chick lit and other book reviews

>>> * TV/Movie/Music industry news

> * Creative units include:

>> * 728x90 Leaderboard

>> * 160x600 Wide Skyscraper

>> * 300x250 Medium Rectangle

> * Ads can be one of each size or any combination of the 3

> * Flash is preferred, so if you have those skills, please flex them.

> Otherwise, animated .gif or static images are okay, too.

3. Dress Fab

> * Each site has a unique personality (e.g., Pop, Fab, Dear, etc.) - please see

> the sites.

> * From time to time, advertising and marketing partners will commission us to

> dress the girls in their clothes (for example head-to-toe in Banana Republic

> or Gap)

> * Download this zip file which contains the two files you¹ll need at

>> * Photoshop file of FabSugar

>> * Image of Gap outfit

> * Please dress FabSugar in the Gap outfit.

>> * Fab¹s pose will remain the same

>> * Fab¹s clothing, accessories, etc. should be changed to match the outfit

After creating your submissions, please ask yourself:

* Do I share the same passion for the content as the rest of the Sugar

Publishing team?

* Was this fun?

* Could I do this every day and deliver stylish and compelling creative

assets to highlight our addictive editorial and user-created content, drive

traffic, and resonate with our readers?

If you can answer yes to the above, then by all means, please submit your

best effort. If not, please reconsider your interest in joining our team.

Please submit your creative assets directly to me by Monday, October 30th

(end of day):

* Via e-mail (if < 20MB attachments)

* Post them online and send me the link

* In electronic format via regular mail to Sugar Publishing Inc., One Sutter

Street, 6th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104, ATTN: Jason Rhee

Publishing Inc. and will not be returned. Sugar Publishing Inc., however,

will not publish your art without permission from you.

We look forward to seeing your work. Please e-mail or call me with any

questions. Good luck!

Best regards,

Jason
