I'm inclined to think they're throwing a bit much at the user (see also the unexplained SIPs and CAPs under the title). But another example of Amazon putting more functionality inside DHTML overlays.
But it's interesting to see how much they can offer around the books content these days, including citations, per page.

To drive interest in Dell’s student discount programs, we built an old-school “skee ball” style study break game. Daily prizes included gaming systems, laptops and entire seasons of fave television series on DVD. Word spread as Facebook Connect allowed users to post their player status and latest scores to their friends. The game ended up eating a lot of study time: The site grabbed over 368,000 entries and 52,000 page views with an average time spent of 9:11 per visit.

The European cave spider is the 'European Spider of the year 2012' and the 'Cave species of the year 2012'. This was decided by the arachnological societies of 25 European countries. The species first sighting in the Netherlands was in december 2012 in a marl cave near Riemst in in Limburg.

A floating ad is a type of rich media Web advertisement that appears uninitiated, superimposed over a user-requested page, and disappears or becomes unobtrusive after a specific time period (typically 5-30 seconds). The most basic floating ads simply appear over the Web page, either full screen or in a smaller rectangular window. They may or may not provide a means of escape, such as a close button. More sophisticated versions can come in any shape or size and include sound, animation, and interactive components. Floating ads use a variety of technologies, such as a combination of Flash and dynamic HTML (DHTML), and may have the ability to display differently according to the user's browser capabilities. United Virtualities and Eyeblaster are two advertising media companies that offer floating ads.

My old portfolio site, an experiment in Javascript animation from 2004, works (albeit slowly) for the most part, on the iPhone.
Now, to figure out how to get mouse events like down/up/click working as expected - I'd love to get DHTML Arkanoid going on this (only thing missing now, I think, is mousedown/mousemove.)
