M.A. Selbert Jewelers for 142 years maintained an air of dignity and dependability at 330 St. Clair Street, Frankfort, Ky.
While glowing in tradition and glory of the past, Selbert's has progressed along with the present in the development and progress of Frankfort and has celebrated many of Kentucky's anniversaries, the 75th through the 200th.
Many Generations of earlier customers continue to shop with Selbert's. They have heard about Selbert's for years and years and years and found for themselves they can buy with the utmost confidence.
My favorite flycatcher. Not easy, but dependable in feeding habits and plentiful. The black phoebe (Sayornis nigricans) is a passerine bird in the tyrant-flycatcher family. It breeds from southwest Oregon and California south through Central and South America. It occurs year-round throughout most of its range and migrates less than the other birds in its genus. Locally, they are definitely not migratory.
Not a back yard bird. They do not eat seeds ... otherwise, they'd be called "Seedcatchers," and that's just not right. Not attracted to suet. But, every park, all over Mt. Diablo, and anywhere there are meadows and ponds, you'll see this wonderful bird. It will be perched until it goes out and captures insects (usually in flight), and returns to the same perch.
When power was tight, which seemed to be fairly often on the SOO you would often get blessed with a "one unit wonder" . If you had that happen an SD40-2 was the best you could hope for, they were ultra dependable and good pullers. An extra east with 78 cars is entrusted to 780 on July 21, 1978 west of Trout Lake.
D&H 756 & 708 at Bevier Street Yard on February 12, 1978 in Binghamton, NY. This was my first trip to places like Sayre & Binghamton. I was still driving the Vega, which was not dependable enough for a trip like this. A friend had a new pickup truck and so we hit the road and stopped at sacred places like Sayre and Bevier Street. I was still using the old Graphlex camera, so the image quality of what I took that day is not the best, but I'm happy to have the pics I got.
A few days ago Mike Dunbar posted a photo with interesting comments about movies of World War II (see link below). It’s a subject that always makes me think of the 1942 movie “Mrs. Miniver”.
The film was intended to inspire audiences in North America as well as Britain during incredibly difficult years. Was it a form of propaganda? Probably. However, the story and production were so good that I was almost as emotional as if I’d actually been alive during those years.
What especially stood out to me was the stoicism of Mrs. Miniver. She held it together whether her husband was gone for days during the rescue at Dunkirk or bombs were dropping all around where she was sheltered with her family. Her ‘stiff upper lip’ was inspirational and particularly so to me since we’ve become a world given easily to flailing emotional reactions.
It just ain’t dignified...... and Mrs. Miniver was always friendly and warm but dignified.
When the movie came to an end, with tears in my eyes I said to Norm, “I really do want to be more like Mrs. Miniver. She was a true lady and her stoicism allowed others to see her as dependable.’ Having said that I went into the kitchen in order to start dinner and found a live sparrow flapping about through the open space and attempting to get out of the house by flying into one of the large windows.
So what did I do with my newly determined attitude of stoicism?
I started screaming and charging about like a half-witted twit.
Really. Could I humiliate myself more by telling you about that?
Anyway, Norm came in the room and calmly started opening windows and doors hoping the bird would simply fly out and find its way to freedom. Meanwhile, our very large Rottweiler was hiding and trembling in fear in the corner.
Once the bird finally found its way outdoors Norm turned to me with a sardonic expression and simply said, “What was that you were saying about being like Mrs. Miniver?”
My humiliation was, and is, complete.

The Tavares e Guerreiro (an integral part of Empresa de Transportes do Rio Guadiana, Lda) ferry ‘Raiano’ is pictured here entering the harbour of Farol. It’sn’t particular elegant, but most of the Sotavento ferries are that ánd it has a large capacity, is sturdy and dependable (in contrast with its former collegue ‘Mira Sado’ here, which suffered engine problems at the end of her days). In the BG is Faro & Olhão.
This is number 59 of the Olhão / Ilha Culatra album and 51 of Ferries.

Sloe Gin
The clear weather of juniper darkened into winter
She fed gin to sloes and sealed the glass container.
When I unscrewed it I smelled the disturbed tart stillness of a bush rising through the pantry.
When I poured it it had a cutting edge and flamed like Betelgeuse.

1932 Packard Twin Six Sport Phaeton
Amidst the backdrop of the economic turmoil that marked the onset of the 1930s, several prominent American luxury car manufacturers grappled with the idea of introducing more affordable models to bolster their financial stability. In 1927, Cadillac had ventured into the mid-priced segment with the LaSalle, but over at its rival, Packard, discussions on offering an entry-level model were fraught with debate. The board of directors expressed concerns about the potential risk of diluting the prestigious Packard name or alienating their loyal, high-end clientele who cherished the brand's exclusivity. Simultaneously, dealers were clamoring for a broader product range to cater to a wider audience. The introduction of the mid-priced "Shovelnose" 900 in 1932 laid bare the complex relationship between the board and dealers. Within a single model year, the 900 was discontinued, underscoring the internal tensions.
Nonetheless, Packard remained steadfast in its commitment to serving its traditional clientele, offering a range of flagship models that exuded the same opulence and grandeur as ever. In 1932, in response to Cadillac's foray into the multi-cylinder realm, Packard revived its iconic Twin-Six model, which had been absent for nine years. The revived Twin-Six featured a remarkable 67-degree L-head V12 engine, delivering a robust 160 horsepower and 322 lb/ft of torque. While not as technologically advanced as Cadillac's overhead-valve Sixteen, the Packard Twin Six matched its power with unparalleled refinement and dependability. Accompanying this formidable V12 engine was a novel X-braced chassis, equipped with four-wheel vacuum-assisted brakes, a synchronized gearbox, and Packard's meticulous engineering of steering and suspension.
Few would contest the Packard Twin Six's standing as one of the finest production cars of its era. Prices ranged from $3,650 to over $7,000 for long-wheelbase models with Packard's renowned Individual Custom coachwork. In a prelude to the challenging economic climate of the coming years, only 549 fortunate individuals chose to invest in a Twin-Six. Today, just as when it was newly introduced, the Packard Twin Six ranks among the most coveted automobiles of the Classic Era, celebrated for its exquisite style and exceptional performance.
Raymond Dietrich’s reputation was beyond reproach among stylists of the late 1920s and early 1930s, and his designs provided welcome new ideas and concepts for Packard’s own coachwork. With the 9th series, Dietrich performed some of his best work; beautiful, elegant machines that made the best of Packard’s fabulous new chassis that was larger, more powerful and faster than any standard model that preceded it. In particular, the “Individual Custom by Dietrich” bodies, which were custom tailored for the flagship senior Packard Chassis (9th, 10th and 11th series) truly reflected the masterful talent of Dietrich. Though they could be purchased directly from a Packard dealer, they were hugely expensive, representing the most costly models available aside from true one-off custom coachwork. Each body was custom-tailored to the buyer’s wishes and in many ways they were the last truly custom Dietrich bodies, as later production cars wearing the Dietrich name simply borrowed styling cues from earlier Individual Customs. Even after Dietrich’s ouster from the firm that bore his name, his influence was felt on Packard’s design catalog for many years to come, and Dietrich-bodied Packards continue to draw attention from collectors and enthusiasts for their impeccable, breathtaking style.

1937 Delahaye Type 135MS Special Roadster
Six-cylinder in-line pushrod engine, two valves per cylinder, 3557 cc, 160 hp at 4200 rpm.
Ettore Bugatti is said to have encouraged Delahaye to enter the luxury car field, advice he may have rued. The Parisian automaker heretofore known for dependable, if lackluster, sedans proceeded to challenge Le Patron and other top-market European makers by producing some of the most glamorous cars on the Continent in the mid to late thirties.
A considerable assist was provided by Joseph Figoni, France’s most daring body designer, and Ovidio Falaschi, an Italian businessman who loved spectacular automobiles. Joining the coachbuilders was Figoni’s friend, and noted racing illustrator, Geo Ham, who provided valuable kibitzing in the realization of a new design theme in which wheel-enveloping fenders became the automobile’s dominant factor, while the passenger space became an unobtrusive capsule in between. Aerodynamics was the purported raison d’être of the design but sheer sensuality, which sold more cars than science among Europe’s elite, was a prominent motivation.
This new idea was first seen in a Delahaye roadster that Aly Khan bought off the floor of the 1936 Paris Salon and reached full flowering the following year in the car you see here: the most talked-about automobile at the 1937 Salon. Built on Delahaye’s short competition chassis, this special roadster has aluminum coachwork and a leather interior by Hermes. Most significant are four features that were patented by Figoni & Falaschi: the front fender design, the ultralight tubular seat, the disappearing soft top, and the windscreen that recedes into the body via a system Figoni devised on the principle of a funicular railway.
At the end of 1937, following the show season, the roadster was sold to a private customer who preferred remaining anonymous. The following year the customer brought the car back to Figoni & Falaschi. Bumpers were added front and rear, obviously useful protection in traffic. A new radiator grille was also installed eliminating the cyclops light that had been incorporated into its base, perhaps the one aspect of the show car that had not been a good idea.

Quercus rubra. Synonym: Quercus borealis, Quercus borealis var. maxima, Дуб канадский, Дуб остролистный.
A handsome shade tree with good form and dense foliage and is a desirable planting for lawns, parks and other large areas. Russet red to bright red leaves in fall but color is not dependable every year. Generally a durable and long-lived tree, mature at 200-300 years. Tolerant of urban conditions. Produces a good crop of acorns every 2-5 years. Cultivars available.
Very high wildlife value. Provides food for many songbirds, ground birds and mammals including deer, raccoons, squirrels and chipmunks. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. A remarkably long list of butterfly larvae feed on the leaves.

FEC GP38-2 511, the last on the roster wearing any stripes on the nose (although the Florida sun has barely left any) and one of a handful still sporting the hurricane logo on the side, returns from working Trujilio & Sons on the Miami downtown job, just past sunrise and a hefty downpour. The crew is seen passing a wax tank car spotted at Vision Candles, one of the neatest little customers still receiving rail shipments in the Miami area, where the homemade "blue-flag" indicates that the car is still connected for unloading. To my surprise, the crew slowed to a halt next to the car, and an employee emerged from the customer to remove the sign, indicating that the car was ready to be pulled. With the "blue-flag" down, the crew proceeded up to the crossing, dropped the Trujilio cars, and made the rare move onto the Vision Candles spur to retrieve the empty car.
The customer base on the FEC downtown job has had some ups and downs in the last ten years, but has recently regained and even found some new business. Notably Dependable Warehousing and Gilda Industries have ceased receiving shipments, but a new customer has started loading presumably waste oil into tanks on the southeast side of the CSX/FEC diamond crossing, and interestingly Quiskeya Foods started taking occasional food products boxcar shipments 3-4 years ago on the lead to Trujilio & Sons, building a loading dock out to the lead across the space where its warehouse once had its own spur. Additionally, Dixie Plywood has started receiving boxcars again after several years of no service, and Omni Transloading's location on the southwest side of the diamond is back to receiving regular shipments after a few years of no service. Rain was deeply needed when it finally came to Seattle this week, to tamp down wildfire smoke during unprecedented heat records.
If it hadn't been for also going on record this month as having the most hazardous air *in the world*, it would've felt like a beautiful summer with record-breaking heat lasting into fall. But we were advised not to even go outdoors during most of this dry heat wave. It was unbreathable and unsafe. Some wore masks inside their own homes. Saturday night cruising in Paprihaven, at the Market Street 7-11.
Eddie Hyatt rolls through the parking lot peering into the store.
Eddie has a skip on his hands, and he always likes to try to find the criminal himself before shelling out more cash for a bounty hunter.
At 60 days, Paprihaven has a shorter deadline than most places. If Eddie doesn't produce the defendant in that time, the court forfeits the bond. Which means Eddie is just out. So, Eddie is highly motivated. He hasn't spotted the punk yet.
Perhaps... just perhaps, if Eddie was not so easy to spot a mile away in his somewhat overstated 1998 Chevy Pro Stock S10, he might be better able to catch a criminal unawares. If the metallic reds don't catch attention, the thunderous exhaust will.
Probably for this reason, Eddie typically has to end up hiring a bounty hunter. And that cost will depend on how long he tries to find the baddie himself. If Eddie gives up early, he knows some dependable, normal bounty hunters who charge reasonable fees.
Paprihaven is also loaded with super types. And there is one who guarantees a capture in 24 hours, and has never failed, and charges big. Eddie only uses her for the big bail amounts, and then only if he's down to the wire.
Tonight, Eddie keeps driving and looking.

Delivery is the process of transporting goods from a source location to a predefined destination. Cargo (physical goods) is primarily delivered via roads and railroads on land, shipping lanes on the sea, and airline networks in the air.
Delivery is a fundamental component of commerce and trade, and involves transport and distribution. Firms specializing in delivering commercial goods from the point of production or storage to their point of sale are generally known as distributors, while those that specialize in the delivery of goods to the consumer are known as delivery services.
The donkey is a domesticated member of the horse family, Equidae. The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5000 years. There are more than 40 million donkeys in the world, mostly in underdeveloped countries, where they are used principally as draught or pack animals.
Donkeys are adapted to marginal desert lands. Unlike wild and feral horses, wild donkeys in dry areas are solitary and do not form harems. Each adult donkey establishes a home range; breeding over a large area may be dominated by one jack. The loud call or bray of the donkey, which typically lasts for twenty seconds and can be heard for over three kilometres, may help keep in contact with other donkeys over the wide spaces of the desert. Donkeys have large ears, which may pick up more distant sounds, and may help cool the donkey's blood. Donkeys can defend themselves by biting, striking with the front hooves or kicking with the hind legs.
Donkeys have a notorious reputation for stubbornness, but this has been attributed to a much stronger sense of self-preservation than exhibited by horses. Likely based on a stronger prey instinct and a weaker connection with humans, it is considerably more difficult to force or frighten a donkey into doing something it perceives to be dangerous for whatever reason. Once a person has earned their confidence they can be willing and companionable partners and very dependable in work.
Although formal studies of their behaviour and cognition are rather limited, donkeys appear to be quite intelligent, cautious, friendly, playful, and eager to learn. Source Wikipedia.

this is a shot of the Skye Bridge showing the main span from Skye looking east to the mainland.
I had a plan for this shot which involved heavy skies, probably raining, high winds which would have moved the clouds across frame at pace and choppy waters which would have given milky white finish with long exposure. Basically I was looking for the mean and moody mono shot.
I get there and for once the day is sunny with not a breath of wind. The water is clam and transparent, the clouds are bright and fluffy and barely move. Where is the normally dependable crappy Scottish weather when you need it? Ah well! I tried to make the best of it so please let me know what you think.

The Temple of the Virgin is among the easiest locations in Zion National Park for photography. The viewpoint is situated just behind the Zion Human History Museum, one of the first stops on the shuttle route. It's also a dependable spot, especially at sunrise. Whenever I don’t have a specific plan, I come here to capture the first sunlight illuminating the breathtaking cliffs of Zion Canyon. On our recent trip, however, things didn’t go as expected. Zion was under a severe cold spell during our visit, and it was one of those mornings when it's tough to get out of bed. While waiting, I noticed that due to cloud cover at the canyon’s western entrance, the anticipated morning light wouldn’t appear. After waiting a while, I decided to leave, but upon reaching the parking lot, I saw the peaks on the opposite side illuminated by incredible light. My challenge was now finding a foreground element before the light faded. Having learned from my experience at Saguaro NP how photogenic cacti can be, I immediately thought of using a few nearby as my composition. The only issue was that the area was under renovation, so I couldn’t get as close as I wanted. Despite that, it remains one of my favorite images from that morning.

There are between 80 to 100 species of lilies (Liliaceae), and most are native to the Northern Hemisphere in Asia, Europe and North America. The bulbs produce leafy stems and large flowers, some of which are strongly scented. Lilies have been treasured throughout history for their beauty and perfume, and they serve as an important cultural symbol.
During the Victorian era, European plant explorers, mostly British, scoured the globe for "new" plants and discovered many new species of lily.
Before they were extensively hybridized, lilies were rare and could be difficult to grow. Jan de Graaff, a native of Holland who started Oregon Bulb Farms in 1934, was responsible for many of the dependable hybrids so popular on the market today.
