Trees in winter

With the arrival of winter, and often at the end of autumn, a new problem arises with trees. This specific "winter" problem is associated with the accumulation of wet snow and the formation of frost on the branches and trunks of trees. "Freezing rains" - phenomena occur under certain combinations of weather conditions: sleet, wind, fog, sudden changes in temperature with a "transition through 0 degrees". Such a significant load on the branches and trunks of trees can lead to emergency situations:

1. Breaking off and collapse of large branches. Typical for poplar, aspen, willow, linden, oak. To a lesser extent for pines and elms.

2. Breaking the forks of co-dominant trunks. Most often found in the above tree species with V-shaped forks. Less typical for U-shaped forks of birch and spruce.

3. Bending under the weight of snow and ice, with possible breaking of the trunks of inclined trees.

I found the trees without obvious problems :)

During the winter the temperature in Bariloche is around 3 degrees Celsius, reaching 8 degrees in the hottest times of the day and -4 degrees at dawn, reaching a thermal sensation of up to -16 degrees C in more extreme situations.

In July of that year, a terrible cold front coming from Antarctica lowered the temperature to -25 degrees for a few days.

Luckily I was not there yet :)))

Early morning in the dark, getting to Cavell Road - Mount Edith Cavell area. Driving the 14-km road, which is narrow and has tight switchbacks that are unsuitable for trailers and large motorhomes (eighteen bends in 180-degree 😉). Arrived the parking lot in the middle of the mountains, no cars there at all. The hiking to the glaciers at its head was not so difficult, too quiet in the early morning, bells was not enough to scare the bears away, putting on the apple music on loudly while hiking. The views of the lush Astoria Valley along Mt. Edith Cavell and Sorrow Peak were spectacular in the early morning light.

Same night, same location as yesterday's image (turned around 180 degrees) - sometimes you need to spin the camara around.

Shoot a lamp on a wall, turn it 90 degrees. Voila, a floor lamp. :)

This is the view from the roof of the apartment building where I have an apartment for sale in Chelsea, NYC. It's a large roof furnished with tables, chairs, umbrellas and lots of planters. The view is 360 degrees. It's fantastic.

While I did not get a chance to get inside the park and do the scenic drive at Red Rock Canyon NCA, the viewpoint on Red Rock Canyon Road provided some expansive views of the Mountains that make the area special. I am not a geologist by any means, but even I could see the different types of rock formations as you scan the mountains. The moment I got here, I knew I wanted to take a panorama shot and didn’t even bother with my wide lenses and only took the 70-200 with meI ended up taking this image by stitching together around 7 or 8 pictures at 70mm. While I wanted to go even more tele, shooting at 70mm was the only way to include the clouds to the frame.

One interesting dilemma I faced at this location was keeping the frame level. Generally, I am a stickler for keeping the horizon level and going through pains to get the image leveled correctly. I also did that here, but when I stitched them together, they looked off so much that it bothered me. So I went back to google maps and looked at these rocks and realized that my images were indeed level, but the rock formations and their horizontal streaks mess with the eyes when you see it in a panorama image. So reluctantly, I had to rotate the image around 4-5 degrees to make it look more natural. I have to say this was the first time I have done something like this, and it felt weird.

Pisa ends up being known for its iconic leaning tower - an injustice to the whole Romanesque architectural ensemble of which it is part, the piazza dei Miracoli.

Other monuments of the square, such as the duomo and the baptistery, are also in varying degrees of sinking and inclination due to the sandy soil structure.

Taken in Washington Park, Albany, NY, on a wildly foggy December day...when the fog stayed thick on the ground for hours and the birds called and gathered in the trees in such volumes that it felt the slightest bit eerie. The lack of snow and the heavy fog made me think it was warmer than it was. When I realized my hands were stiff and numb I retreated to my car and saw with great surprise it was only 32 degrees.

Day 5 of the heat wave, on track to set new record for consecutive days above 90 degrees.

Got this shot last week at our northern most point on our trip to Iceland, probably about 25 miles south of the Arctic Circle, thx!

some golden hour good times :) IT WAS WARM (okay like 40 degrees, so relatively ;)) THIS DAY AND I WAS SO HAPPY AND I DIDN'T WEAR A COAT BECAUSE I WAS PRETENDING IT WAS SPRING :)

A very hot day, over 30 degree, but when I saw the sparkling on the water, cool down!

Orchid buds for the Crazy Tuesday challenge, "flower buds."

This weeks challenge was challenging indeed. It snowed pretty much all last week and it was 19 degrees F this morning so I had to raid a flower shop to find any sort of bud.

Happy Crazy Tuesday!

I had my internship to get my bachelor degree at Rotterdam Airport. The fantastic people of the Marketing dept at the time helped me graduate. Sometimes you need to be lucky to meet the right people at the right time. Forever grateful.

A Blue Jay checks out its reflection as it pauses at the heated bird bath for a refreshing drink of water on the coldest day of the winter to date: 20 degrees F (-7 C) at 7 a.m.

I have so many things that bring me happiness, (pets, family...etc). but this morning all my other ideas took back seat. It was 61 in VT yesterday and freezing rain and snow (still snowing) today...9 degrees. I was without power until early this morning. When it came back on...I checked the freezer to see how my food was doing. There was Ben! :) I have 2 spoons...I can share. Happy Sos.

It was a beautiful sunny day here today so we went over to Christchurch for a walk along the river

The end of January and the very first weeks of February brought large amounts of snow into Austria. Accompanied with days with 8 hours of sunshine, perfect conditions were expected to take a tour to Obdach – a destination that I have been planning to visit for a long time. Initially, I planned to take the last fast train to Graz which arrives there around 1:30 a.m and continue the journey with an early S-Bahn towards Zeltweg. However, as temperatures around – 15 Degrees Celsius were forecasted, I had to rent a room – such temperatures are certainly not the perfect ones to have a tour with a stopover at night. Since I had a room for the night, I decided to start early in the morning – the first destination was Grünbach am Scheenberg. Recently, however, some excitement is associated with tours around Wiener Neustadt as due to the scarcity of spare parts, the Desiros of the series 5022 are occasionally replaced by the ugly old 5047 DMUs. This day, I had a luck as all trains were operated with Desiros. One of them, 5022.038 is passing my spot with R 6427 towards Puchberg.

The six degree curve at the east end of Echo, Utah is the sharpest bend on the Union Pacific main line west of Omaha, Nebraska. Even when Harriman built a second main track through Echo in 1923, there was no practical way to reduce the curvature. The same sharpness applies to the parallel Lincoln Highway, and even Interstates 80/84. Slow down, people.

More than a century later, Union Pacific's hot Denver - Salt Lake City premium intermodal train navigates the restrictive, 35 mph curve through Echo on August 28, 2025. It won't be long before the ZDVSC 28 is back up to 70 mph.

The train had four clean winged GE locomotives. I have witnesses.

This is an engineers set square, used to check right angles. But right angles are not the same on a curved surface are they?
