The Riverwest 24 is a twenty-four hour bike race whose winners are determined not only by how many miles they ride, but on their engagement with the community through which they ride. The organizers award bonus laps to people who participate in decidedly non-bike-related events. The events vary: one is as innocuous as hugging a longtime resident of Riverwest, another is subjecting yourself to permanent marking by getting a tattoo. But these events count and make this bike race more than just another test of physical prowess and athletic smarts.
The defending champion pictured above, who would go on to ride more than 200 miles and finish in a tie for third - while wearing flip-flips no less, won his two championships without achieving the highest total mileage. And even though he "gave" his second title away to the person that did, he will always be considered the true champion of both the 2008 and the 2009 Riverwest 24.
