Projetée dès 1683, la tour est tracée en 1689 par Vauban. La construction de l'édifice, supervisée par l'ingénieur Jean-Pierre Traverse, débute en 1693 pour s'achever en 1696. Elle protège essentiellement les accès à la batterie, qui défend le mouillage, dont l'importance stratégique est capitale pour la sécurité de la rade. La tour casematée fait partie d'un vaste dispositif de défense : la batterie basse doit être dotée de onze pièces d'artillerie croisant leurs feux avec ceux de la pointe du Grand Gouin, des lignes primitives de Quélern et des nombreuses batteries côtières. La garnison comprend alors un lieutenant, un sergent et cinq hommes appuyés par des miliciens composés d'habitants de Camaret2.
Lors de la bataille de Camaret le 18 juin 1694, les Anglo-Hollandais tentent un débarquement sur la plage de Trez-Rouz. Commandées par Vauban, les troupes françaises repoussent les assaillants, l'opération est un échec. Lors de l'attaque, la tour, dont le commandement est confié à Alexandre de Boulainvilliers, capitaine de galiote et d'artillerie, est encore en travaux. La batterie, en cours d'achèvement tout comme les deux corps de garde, n'est alors armée que de 9 canons de 24 livres de balle (boulets d'environ 12 kg) et 3 mortiers de fer de 12 pouces. Cette victoire vaut à Camaret d'être exemptée de fouages jusqu'à la Révolution et d'hériter du titre de « gardienne du littoral armoricain »3.

An iPhone photo from our recent Malta trip.
Unknown to me this location known as the Inland Sea at Dwejra Bay on the island of Gozo was used as a film location in Game of Thrones. I have never watched the programme so didn't recognise the scene.
This little lake is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a small tunnel that cuts through the surrounding high cliffs. The lake (known as the Inland Sea) provides a safe harbour and fishing huts have been built on two sides. It was interesting to see that the local boats are pushed into and hauled out of the water by a number of old Land Rover Defenders.
This amazing gorge is made by water and used by people in the summer to get to the beach. I have driven through once with water rushing. What an amazing experiance.
Production of this iconic vehicle recently ceased after 47 years. The 1A was the vehicle I took my driving test in in 1962.

These two Great Egrets are nesting on a small island with several dozen other egrets and herons. When the one on the bottom landed too close to the nest of the other, the intruder was chased away.
I was at the riparian preserve the other day when I saw this female belted kingfisher loudly clattering and chasing an immature cooper's hawk. I witnessed several chase scenes over the course of 15 minutes. She did NOT want that cooper's hawk anywhere near her pond. I was a little surprised given their size disparity, but hey, a girl needs to defend her territory, right?

I watched this pair of bluebirds valiantly fighting off continuous attempts by tree swallows to take over their nesting box at Bombay Hook NWR
The light was very poor so I should not have tried to take a flight shot, let alone post it, but I kind of like the blurry action effect

A short eared owl spreads its wings to conceal its catch from other owls and northern harriers in the area.
There can't be alot of people alive who recognise Dinorwic slate quarry as an historic landmark. But it has actually been put forward for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Anyone who has climbed up into it knows why. But you can read about it here whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5678/ Until it gets worldwide recognition it's small army of wild Welsh mountain goats are its only defenders.(Well, not including me and some others. I'm not sure about them, but I might be an old goat too ...)
