too many absolutely horrendous things have happened in the last month...wars, genocide, hurricanes, catastrophic flooding, nazis in the streets, and just yesterday: london.

no place to run, a deathgrip on hope and now this....

summer's almost gone.

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" - Muhammad Ali

That quote matches perfectly with this little girl. She's like a little butterfly floating around, but watch out when she gets mad...she will sting you like a bee. :D haha. Get her angry and she can be vicious. I know...it's hard to imagine...but it's true. Fortunately for us, she is a butterfly 95% of the time and a bee only 5% of the time. :)

What a strange couple of months.

Last year a friend of mine and his wife bought an eBike each. I took one for a quick spin and it was a great experience. I decided to look for one and had a test ride in a proper bike shop, a ride on one someone I know was selling and decided to buy one of these Vitesse bikes as two of my old school friends had bought them. Mrs K and I went to a large retailer and pushed an already built up one to the check out and they refused to sell it to us with no detailed explanation as to why not but the hint was it was they way someone had built them up. So we went online and paid for delivery and it duly arrived. I built it up and after removing the protective packaging found it had the wrong brakes, gears and forks on! The retailer queried it with the importer who just didn’t seem interested in resolving the issue. Anyway we came to what I will call a satisfactory compromise and I kept it. This week it all came clear why they couldn’t give a flying **** - they’ve gone bust holding stock of 35000 bikes worth £25000000 apparently. Yikes.

I’ve been able to use it for a few weeks now and it’s great.

I didn’t buy it as an economy measure but I reckon I’ve saved £50 in petrol/gasoline costs as well as doing some journeys quicker than in the car due to Manchester rush hour traffic. One morning Google Maps showed it as 23 minutes in the car and I did it in 21 - only doing about 150 metres on roads with traffic on. I’ve used about half that to buy those funky and amazing DMR Deathgrips.

It is good exercise too. Some people think eBikes don’t need pedalling but UK legislation means that if you stop pedalling - you just stop! The motor gives ‘assistance’ - stick it in Assistance Level 5 though and you can laugh at hills and inclines and whizz past younger, fitter people on ordinary pedal bikes. Sometimes it makes me feel like Lance Armstrong (ooh wait a minute, that’s probably not a good example).

I guess with the company going bust I might struggle with warranty issues but I paid relatively little for it that I’m not too concerned apart from the fact it might be difficult to get a replacement battery in the future.

The Eagle was trying to fly with the rabbit, but was unable at this point. It could only lift slightly and move it a short distance. Eventually after much defurring and feasting on innards the distance improved to where it was able to fly (struggle) with its catch.

Ah, home in California at last.

We arrived home last Monday night and on Wednesday morning were headed up to a dear friend's house on the south fork of the American River for a few (it turned out to be five) days of rafting, playing and generally relaxing. This place is sort of a home away from home as we've been regulars here for the past fourteen years and the familiar sights, sounds and smells are as comforting as it gets.

This shot is what it looks like... and yes, I had my D700 and tripod set up in the middle of the river in rushing, knee-deep water... and in case you were wondering, yes, it almost ended in disaster..

We spent much of the day whitewater rafting and returned to relax with a few beers before dinner. I wanted to catch the fading light in the canyon and carefully waded out into the river planting each step deliberately and checking it before putting weight on it. The rocks are all covered with a slimy moss and are very slippery.

I found a good spot with a little cover from the current for the tripod and set up for long exposures with my B&W 3.0 ND filter. I shot a few frames, relocated, refocused and fired a few more for a total of about seven frames before the light became too low and I was having to bump up the ISO to keep the exposure times reasonable.

This was the final frame of the sequence. When the shutter closed, I picked up my tripod and turned to head for shore. I wasn't sure how good the shots were and was preoccupied by hoping I hadn't wasted the last 45 minutes standing in the cold river. As I turned and took my first step, the rock beneath my foot rolled and made me step quickly to try to catch my balance which, on the slimy rocks, was quite impossible and I stumbled for the next few ungraceful steps, accelerating all the while as I crashed down to my knees and one hand. The water was up to my shoulders as my left hand pushed skyward with a deathgrip on my D700 fitted with the 24-70mm.

I felt foolish for my lack of attention which caused the fall considering how much care I took in getting out there. As I got back to my feet and moved to some higher, drier rocks to check my gear, blood ran freely down my right calf and I saw that I was missing a bottle cap sized chunk of skin from my right knee cap.

Very carefully, I made my way across the deeper part of the current back to shore and limped back up to the deck where I put my foot up and tossed back an IPA telling my "no-sh@t-there-I-was" story to my friends as my wife dressed the wound.

Three days later, I'm still limping around with some good bruises and what will probably be a mean scar. I wish the shot was better considering, but it's not bad... and... it made for quite a tale. :)

More to come from the river.

While wandering Lake McIntosh again on a mid-spring's day while awaiting advent of a real spring, I found the path and then this. Over the years, folks have beat a trail down the bank to the shore of MAC Lake and trod upon the wandering roots of the shoreline tree. As always, green sucks the weenie. This must be in the way of the path.

Boy were Meeker and Longs Peak ever snow loaded today. As of today, we are over 100% seasonal moisture in just this area. I guess that comes with 5 bad days and one decent day and starting over.. I understand, the majority of western states are now in a major water crisis as bad as the southeastern states are in a stupidity crisis. This image is a bit of stray path somewhere out here at MAC. I never noticed it before but we do have an Art in the Park program in town. Really... is this it?

It's almost like someone let a pandemic of weather loose on us and then lied while it really gathered steam. A few more bad days to go. McIntosh Ag farm, still looks pretty darn closed for business while some BoCo work trucks were parked there. The maskless McIntosh is dangerous as are our other parks. Amerikans have yet to work out the logic on masks, especially those cloaked in Q-FOX gibbernews. This week, I saw an unmasked mother hauling her unmasked children around Golden Ponds. I thought it was Charles Bronsen who acted in the "Death Wish" series. Is all Amerika the new death wish. The supid still rule!

I started out with my camera yesterday but got hit with sprinkles and just could not summon the energy to continue without better sky prospects. This was a badly mixed sky with an intention to hammer me before I get back home. discovered this snap in my holding directory but had to analyze the file numbers to find the source was a trip to Mac. There was a killer sky. There have been good skies in the past, this intends punishment. I wanted exercise and finally the sun gods gave us a string of decent days. I am an - I want out guy.

This is the edge of a little copse near my house, the ivy has smothered the entire patch of trees and all the ground in between them, continuing its expansion until it could go no further - the strangled wooden fence pictured marks the boundary of its domain.

"Floating. It's like the afterlife's way of kick-starting release of our deathgrip on the material world. Or it's like God-damned impotence on meth and Jesus is your pusher. But, hey? Can I complain? I'm fucking dead, god damn it, and just slowly rising here. Slowly, slowly rising...."

Stumbled onto the EDC movement a few months back. They advocate a philosophy of preparedness by always carrying functional tools that can help manage common everyday tasks, but also unexpected situations or emergencies.

True EDC zealots go a bit far, spending hundreds of dollars on folding knives, multitools, flashlights, etc. I just wanted a few bang-for-buck EDC additions for my daily load.

From left to right:

- Asthma inhaler

True EDC: simply can't leave home without it.

- iTP A1 EOS SS R2 keychain flashlight

Runs on the new advanced Cree LEDs. Outshines a regular big krypton bulb Maglite with ease.

- Lacie Iamakey 8GB

Plastic keychain USB sticks tend to break off. This one is made entirely out of metal.

- Troika slim wallet

Combined slim moneyclip and cardholder.

- Apple iPhone4

Applied a wraparound sticker (against deathgrip) and a Leica vinyl decal (just for fun).

- Prometheus CR1

Mechanical toolwatch, based on the 7750 chronograph movement.

- Victorinox Small Tinker swiss army knife

Smallest SAK that has screwdrivers, the tool I most regularly need.

Of Monsters & Men @ Bonnaroo 2013

Seen something like this similar before and had to give it a try as I think it looks awesome. Just a few tweaks in photoshop and voila, there's a floating guard under the grip of darth vader. Don't worry no Lego was hurt in the making of this photo :)

Over the last year, I've been developing a technique that combines drawing and painting in a unique manner. This was drainted on four layers of clear film over the course of three days. While listening to lots and lots of Death Grips.

www.milestsang.com.

Oh crap. Oh crap oh crap oh crap. The sounds coming from above were bad enough, then the lights in the room go out. It's nearly pitch black in here beside some small rays of light coming from windows with the blinds down. We all go quiet, until another loud thud above and something hitting the ground about 20 feet away from us breaks the silence. None of us have anything for combat in the dark except Jackie and that built-in radar of his. The point is after that noise we all scattered and hid. I went behind some shelves and stayed totally quiet. There was a stun gun in my utility belt I had a deathgrip on in case Dionaea didn't need his eyes to find me. All I could do was hope Steph and Jackie were prepared as well. As I'm sitting behind the shelves stiff as a board I hear Dionaea just mere feet from me, walking around and breathing loudly. That breathing was way, way creepier than it should be. It only got louder and louder until I'm sure the only thing separating me and Dionaea was the shelves I was hiding behind. I learned how right I was when one of those tendrils came around the right side of the shelves, just inches from me. The tendril kept getting closer and closer. I was sweating bullets. I was about to bust out the stun gun until he let out a growl and the tendril quickly pulled itself away. There was a few steps and the whole floor of the building shook. He just went after Jackie. From the sound of things it didn't go very good, but still, I gotta help my little buddy now....
