Los primeros ordenadores portátiles equipados con alguno de los procesadores gráficos de la familia GeForce RTX 20 de NVIDIA ya están llegando a las tiendas. Uno de los modelos que ya podemos encontrar en algunos establecimientos es el GS65 Stealth 8SG de MSI, una máquina equipada con la actual GPU tope de gama de NVIDIA (con permiso de la versión ‘Ti’), el chip GeForce RTX 2080 en versión Max-Q que, sobre el papel, asusta por sus poderosas especificaciones.

 

Nosotros hemos podido probar este equipo con cierta calma durante una presentación de NVIDIA celebrada hace pocos días en Madrid, y esta primera toma de contacto nos ha servido para hacernos una idea bastante certera acerca de lo que nos propone MSI con este portátil, que tiene una vocación clara de máquina para juegos. Como comprobaremos en la siguiente sección del artículo, a sus especificaciones es muy difícil ponerles pegas, por lo que no me extrañaría que esta máquina se consolide como una opción a tener en cuenta por los jugones que quieren lo más potente de lo último y tienen un presupuesto holgado. Aquí tenéis nuestras primeras impresiones acerca de este espectacular portátil para gaming.

 

MSI GS65 Stealth 8SG: especificaciones técnicas

 

El componente más llamativo de este equipo es, sin duda, su procesador gráfico. Aunque indagaremos un poco más adelante en él nos viene bien recordar que actualmente el chip GeForce RTX 2080 es la GPU para ordenadores portátiles más ambiciosa que tiene NVIDIA en catálogo. En las máquinas de sobremesa, por el momento, el tope de gama es la versión ‘Ti’ de esta misma GPU, que pasó hace varias semanas por nuestro banco de pruebas.

 

La única diferencia reseñable entre la versión Max-Q del chip RTX 2080 y la edición normal es que la frecuencia de reloj a la que trabaja la primera es algo más baja con el objetivo de que pueda ser integrada en los ordenadores portátiles de chasis más compacto, en los que con frecuencia no es posible incorporar un sistema de refrigeración voluminoso.

 

De restituir las imágenes que renderiza la GPU de NVIDIA se responsabiliza un panel LCD con tecnología IPS de 15,6 pulgadas, resolución Full HD y refresco máximo de 144 Hz. A priori esta resolución parece un poco justa para un panel de ese tamaño, pero si tenemos presente que, ante todo, esta es una máquina para juegos, no parece una mala decisión porque la GPU RTX 2080 mueve los gráficos de cualquier juego a 1080p y con la máxima calidad de imagen posible con una soltura absoluta, que es lo que cabe esperar de un procesador gráfico de alta gama (lo comprobamos en nuestro análisis de la versión de sobremesa). Incluso al activar el trazado de rayos debería arrojar cadencias superiores a los 60 FPS a esa resolución.

 

En lo que concierne a la CPU y la memoria principal, MSI ha ido sobre seguro. El procesador de esta máquina es un Intel Core i7-8750H de octava generación con 6 núcleos y capaz de procesar simultáneamente 12 hilos de ejecución (threads) que, a priori, encaja bien como partenaire de la GPU de NVIDIA. Y la RAM también pinta muy bien porque 32 GB de tipo DDR4-2666 deberían ser suficientes por mucha «caña» que metamos a este ordenador portátil con juegos de última hornada o aplicaciones de creación de contenidos.

Otro eslabón importante de esta cadena de componentes que deben trabajar al unísono es el subsistema de almacenamiento secundario, que ha sido resuelto en este equipo con una unidad SSD de 512 GB con interfaz NVMe M.2. No está mal, pero, dado el precio de este portátil, que supera los 3.000 euros, habría sido preferible que contase con una unidad de 1 TB. Durante esta primera toma de contacto no tuve la oportunidad de ejecutar ningún test que me permita evaluar el rendimiento de esta unidad SSD (como nuestro habitual CrystalDiskMark), pero dada su interfaz de conexión NVMe M.2 debería estar a la altura de lo que requieren los demás componentes de esta máquina.

Este portátil demuestra que el ‘gaming’ no está reñido con un diseño estilizado

 

Una de las características de este equipo que más me gustan es su diseño. Y es que, al igual que el ordenador portátil de Gigabyte del que os hablamos hace unos días, apuesta por un chasis mucho más estilizado que el que nos ofrecían la mayor parte de las máquinas para jugar que podíamos encontrar en el mercado hasta hace relativamente poco tiempo. Y esta es, sin duda, una noticia estupenda. Además, es de aluminio y está muy bien mecanizado, como cabe esperar de un equipo de este nivel.

 

En la parte más gruesa el chasis mide 17,9 mm, un espesor muy razonable en un equipo en cuyo interior residen componentes tan ambiciosos como los que tiene este portátil. Además, en las fotografías que ilustran este artículo podéis ver que los marcos superior y laterales de la pantalla son estrechos, lo que refleja con total claridad que los fabricantes son conscientes de que los usuarios a los que nos gusta jugar con nuestro PC no estamos dispuestos a renunciar a un diseño estilizado y cuidado. Este equipo podría ser una excepción afortunada, pero no es así. Todos los portátiles con GPU GeForce RTX que NVIDIA enseñó en este evento tenían un diseño muy trabajado.

 

La experiencia que nos propone el teclado fabricado por SteelSeries de este equipo es muy satisfactoria, a pesar de que no es mecánico. Es comprensible que un portátil con un chasis tan estilizado y un grosor tan reducido no apueste por un teclado mecánico, pero, al menos, debe contar con un teclado chiclet de calidad. Y, afortunadamente, el de esta máquina está realmente bien. Las teclas prácticamente no tienen ningún tipo de oscilación transversal, un problema que, cuando aparece, suele provocarnos fatiga por estrés mecánico en las articulaciones de nuestras manos, y su tacto y recorrido son muy convincentes. Como es habitual en las máquinas para gaming, está retroiluminado mediante LED RGB y es programable.

 

El touchpad, por su parte, tiene una superficie generosa, un tacto muy agradable por su suavidad y es multitáctil. Sin embargo, en mi opinión, no está al mismo nivel del teclado. Y no lo está porque durante el tiempo que pude utilizarlo me dio la sensación de que adolece de una cierta falta de sensibilidad tanto al toque como al arrastre. No es nada grave, pero a un equipo que cuesta lo que nos piden por este hay que exigirle, y creo que este touchpad tiene margen de mejora.

 

Por otro lado, la conectividad de este equipo es completísima. Tiene 1 puerto USB 3.1 de segunda generación y tipo C, 3 puertos USB 3.1 de primera generación y tipo A, una salida HDMI 2.0, otra mini-DisplayPort… Como veis, no está nada mal. Lo único que echo de menos es una ranura que permita leer el contenido de las tarjetas SD porque, aunque este sea un equipo con una vocación muy clara de máquina para juegos y creación de contenidos, este componente siempre viene bien y puede sacarnos de un apuro si no tenemos a mano un lector de tarjetas SD externo.

 

Esta es la experiencia que nos ofrecen este equipo y su «monstruosa» GPU

 

Antes de que os cuente cuáles fueron mis sensaciones durante el tiempo que pude probar este ordenador portátil no está de más que repasemos brevemente las principales características de su GPU GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q. Este chip tiene 2.944 núcleos CUDA; trabaja a una frecuencia de reloj de 735 MHz, que puede incrementarse hasta alcanzar los 1.095 MHz si las circunstancias lo requieren y está respaldado por 8 GB de memoria GDDR6 que se comunican con él a través de un bus de 256 bits que alcanza una tasa de transferencia de 448 GB/s. Como veis, las especificaciones intimidan.

 

La experiencia que nos propone a 1080p la GPU GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q es fantástica tanto sin trazado de rayos como con él

 

En cualquier caso, lo realmente interesante es indagar en la experiencia que nos ofrece esta GPU como el alma de este ordenador portátil que es. Tomando como referencia los resultados que arrojó la versión de sobremesa del procesador gráfico GeForce RTX 2080 en nuestro banco de pruebas y lo que pude observar durante la presentación de NVIDIA en la que tuve la oportunidad de probar este equipo, mis expectativas son muy altas.

 

Desafortunadamente, no podremos ofreceros la cadencia exacta de imágenes por segundo que es capaz de alcanzar hasta que tengamos la oportunidad de probarlo a fondo en nuestras propias instalaciones, pero puedo adelantaros con seguridad que a 1080p, que es la resolución nativa del panel, este portátil lo mueve todo con la máxima calidad de imagen y con una cadencia sostenida cercana a los 144 Hz del panel. Además, a 1080p su rendimiento al activar el trazado de rayos es fantástico. Los responsables de NVIDIA me enseñaron una demo en tiempo real de ray tracing, y estoy seguro de que aquello iba a más de 60 FPS. No puedo adelantaros qué cadencia alcanzó, pero las imágenes eran suaves y tenían un acabado global de lujo.

 

El ruido ambiental que había durante el tiempo que pude probar este equipo me impidió valorar correctamente su calidad de sonido, pero no evitó que me fijase en las marcas involucradas en los componentes que se encargan de reproducirlo. La compañía danesa especializada en la fabricación de cajas acústicas de alta fidelidad Dynaudio se ha encargado del ajuste fino y la ecualización (no puedo aseguraros si también del diseño de los altavoces), y el DAC que se responsabiliza de la conversión del audio del dominio digital al analógico pertenece a la familia Sabre de la empresa californiana ESS Technology, cuyas soluciones intervienen en muchos productos de alta fidelidad y gama alta. Así que sí, el sonido de este portátil pinta bien. Confío en poder confirmároslo si finalmente tenemos la oportunidad de analizarlo a fondo en nuestras propias instalaciones.

 

MSI GS65 Stealth 8SG: la opinión de Xataka

 

Las especificaciones de este ordenador portátil son tan ambiciosas que dejan poco margen a una posible mejora. Las únicas que se me ocurren requerirían reemplazar el panel por uno con resolución 4K UHD y un refresco lo más alto posible, y también añadir una segunda unidad SSD con interfaz NVMe M.2 para habilitar el modo de funcionamiento RAID 0 (striping), que incrementaría aún más el rendimiento del subsistema de almacenamiento secundario. Pero, como es lógico, estas mejoras tendrían un impacto muy importante en el precio de esta máquina, que ya es de por sí elevado.

 

En cualquier caso, no hace falta rizar el rizo. La configuración que nos propone MSI en este portátil es suficiente para ofrecer a la mayor parte de los jugones una experiencia fantástica. Incluso a los más exigentes. Además, es una máquina estupenda también para creación de contenidos (edición de vídeo, infografía, retoque fotográfico, etc.), o para cualquier otra tarea que conlleve un esfuerzo de cálculo importante. La faena es que su precio es lo suficientemente alto para impedir a muchos usuarios que se hagan con él, pero es lo que tiene apostar por tantos componentes de gama alta.

Avoid G.Skill RAM due to their ignorance about their own products. I had to make FIVE ram purchases to get 24G of RAM, had to return my motherboard and build my computer twice, and it's definitely not my fault they have undocumented incompatibilities that screwed the whole situation up. Avoid G.Skill RAM.

 

G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2x8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4-19200) Memory Kit (Model F4-2400C15D-16GRR) $200.98. www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231826 This RAM ended up not working, and neither the RAM company nor the motherboard company would take responsibility for the incompatibility. In the end, it caused a 30-day delay in our system build, caused me to have to unbuild and re-build the computer (at the motherboard level), drive around to microcenter, and waste $50+ in shipping and diagnostic fees. In the end, it turns out that the motherboard requires EVERY SIMM in it to be exactly the same. What a stupid limitation that no othermotherboard I've ever owned has had. But even worse was the support where the people who made the motherboard don't know this. The G.Skill people, however, should know better, as people generally already have a motherboard when choosing RAM. I think that places more of the burden on them. I won't be buying G.Skill RAM again.

Piñasphere joined the fray for the Case Mod WorldSeries 2022

 

I wanted to experiment how far I could get with the design of a Computer case, from the standard that people picture in their mind when you talk about a PC, a boxy shape.

Even though it is watercooled, it is also less than 5 litres, and weighs about 2 Kgs.

I didn't paint it because I wanted to reach a point in which it looked good that way.

You ever drive around town looking for thermal compound? It's not a good time looking for that precious Arctic Silver! But you need it, because heat won't just magically dissipate from a CPU into a heat sink, and you've got a CPU to install. You gotta use thermal paste to cause that thermal transfer to happen. And it's one of the more annoying steps, because you get silver on your hands. But hey, my fingernails look pretty ketchupy here anyway. It sucks if you don't have the stuff on hand when you need it. It's nice when things come with their own little packet, but you gotta have a $15 bottle (near-lifetime supply) on hand.

CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer I30 CPU Cooler: $34.98 from SuperBiiz.com ... After having to upgrade CPU coolers TWICE IN A MONTH with my old computer Hades, due to cat hairs, I knew not to bother skimping out this time. I want straight for the more expensive, more large, $40 aftermarket cooler. Unfortunately, it was so large it blocked a RAM slot, and due to the way RAM works in this motherboard, that means not being able to use 2 RAM slots. But my motherboard has 8 RAM slots. I just wish I hadn't bought 4G SIMMS, because 6 * 4G = 24G, and being maxed out at 24G RAM kinda sucks when I regularly break 30G of actual-memory-used. If I could have used those 2 extra slots, I'd be up to 32G of RAM. If I had bought 8G SIMMS, I could have gotten 24G of RAM, and then upgraded up to 48G. But I'm stuck with 24G, and not wanting to spend $300 just to get to 32G (by virtue of having to re-buy all-8G SIMMS). How I Downloaded Pokémon Legends Arceus On Ryujinx Emulator PC

 

I am currently using a WIN 11 PC with i7-8700 CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM and an RTX 2070 Super GPU! Pokemon Legends: Arceus is running smoothly on it especially if you have the complete shaders of the game. In order to boot this game and avoid any graphical glitches in the game, you will need the latest Switch Firmware installed on Ryujinx. You will also need the latest prod.keys installed in ryujinx's library. For more details on how to get the game just watch this video tutorial until the end.

See? My fingers are all silvery now. This is the CPU cooler installed on top of CPU, with thermal paste correctly applied (thus silver-fingers), and fan hooked up to motherboard. Possibly the hardest amd most physically stressful step of the whole thing. There seems to be very little standardization on how you attach these things to the CPU socket, and the attachments themselves are always super-difficult to work, because they are designed to not damage the socket. Plastic screws that you can barely tell which way to turn, and only turn 90 degrees when inserted a specific way. Crap like that. And you can barely see what you are doing, due to the fan being larger than the socket it is attaching to. It's super-painful.
