With the new scanner up and running, I've 'been' to Portugal again this morning for a few hours. Sadly that wonderful country is now all but devoid of AEC's products after many years being wedded to the British marque. However with a little artistic licence, a willing mind and electronic devices, I've re-lived the happy weeks spent there chasing Southall's finest in the pre-digital age. Even at the turn of the century, there was a feast of things at which to point the camera.
Here in the central Portuguese town of Fundau there were two operators, both of whom used AEC products. This one was Rodoviaria Beira Interior who'd recently commenced a re-liverying excercise and their 2317 (BM-51-67), a mid engined AEC UTIC, is seen disgorging the last of its elderly passengers down the precipitous stairs at the town's bus station.

Three Marshall Capital Darts new to First Centrewest (First London) in 2000 sit withdrawn at Muller Road Depot despite being DDA compliant. With them is Volvo Olympian/Northern Counties Palatine 2 L654 SEU 34154 new to Cityline for the 904 Bath Road P&R. It was later transferred to Badgerline and remained that way after Badgerline became First. Ex-First Glasgow Optare Excel is on the right along with 3 or 4 other Excels. Dennis Lance M140 FAE is on the far left.
Stagecoach Fife 17127 shows how DDA compliancy is achieved. When rebuilt from dual door, the ramp in the centre door was lost. The wheelchair bay is also relocated from offside to nearside. A pair of ramps - clearly unused as yet - are held in a special bracket above th nearside wheel to allow access through the front door where a ramp is not fitted.
The first addition to the Albion Coachways fleet for about 18 months is a surprise. Although the Mercedes used until now on the Barstock town service is technically a coach and thus still legal, the council had been complaining about non-compliance with DDA, so it has been replaced by this compliant Plaxton Beaver 2 with a wheelchair lift that very rarely gets used. AY55 DFZ has the distinction of being the only DDA-compliant vehicle in the entire Quicksilver group, and started life as the Pulham's version from the Plaxton Centenary set with a change of fleetnames and the additional door for the lift drawn on.
The last of the W reg Solos, 47428 was for much of 2014 a regular at Banchory on the 204 but as it did not meet the DDA criteria from 2015 was moved to Macduff as a reserve bus before being withdrawn at the end of 2014 and now sitting at the overspill depot awaiting its disposal.

Ah, the classic tribulations of a flipdot display… for some reason, this display shifted slightly as it came up Alfred Gelder Street, losing a ‘t’ and strangely expanding the ‘e’ in the display. Unreliability like this is why some companies like this are trying to convert all their buses to LED displays, if not withdrawing the buses carrying them altogether, and while its sad, it's quite understandable in this case. But with that, that's all three of Stagecoach in Hull's flipdot ex-Manchester Transbus Presidents in the bag. And to be quite honest, I am very, very happy that I now have all of them on photographic record before their looming withdrawal. The Plaxton President is one of my favourite body styles out there for a modern, post-DDA bus, and with most of the fleet gone already - if you remember that one great time we had a whole slew of them in September 2018 before they were shipped off to Scotland - and for me, they'll be sorely missed when the time comes for their inevitable withdrawal.
The last of the three flipdot Presidents left in Hull, Stagecoach in Hull's 18036, a 2003 Transbus Trident President new to Stagecoach in Manchester before being transferred to Hull in 2008, heads up Alfred Gelder Street to cross the bridge from West to East Hull on the 14 with a faulty display for 'Greaieled'.
Back where it belongs, on the streets of York is Scania L113CRL Wright Axcess Ultralow N414 ENW running HCT service 13 to Haxby (which among enthusiasts is affectionately referred to as York's Heritage Bus Route).
A remarkable survivor, this bus was new in late 1995 to Rider York for Park and Ride duties as fleet number 8414 in a distinctive 2-tone blue livery (as had been used on M113SLS, a demonstrator which had been tried by Rider York and they obviously liked the livery so much they then adopted it) and was one member in the very first full batch of low floor buses for Yorkshire. Along with later additions as the P&R operation expanded, this stayed in York for 7 years until 2002 when the entire singe decker York fleet had been replaced by inferior Volvo B7L's and B6BLE's - this bus moved to Potteries for a while beofre settling in the Leeds fleet. A rear-end collision almost spelled the end for this, however the decision was made to rebuild and repair to keep it in use. Upon reentering service with Firstgroup, it had been given the new Olympia livery and at the time was the oldest bus in passenger service to gain the livery. Withdrawn in late summer 2014, it was feared this would make a one-way trip to Barnsley - but instead was saved by Craig Temple of ConnexionsBuses; initially bought for preservation, a full inspection revealled it's condition was simply too good for it to not see a bit more use in service. However, with the DDA deadline at the end of 2015 looming ever closer its days of use on public service are very much limited. Craig may yet decide to keep this on the books for another year but only on 'Closed Door' school services, but whatever decision is made 8414 will be going straight into preservation locally as soon as it is withdrawn.
Seen here on Christmas Eve at york rail station, a stop it would have served many times when new running the White Line P&R route. In the background is a more common B7RLE running route 12 to Monks Cross - I suspect that in the not-too-distant future it might be a green and white bus running that route too (I might be wrong though)
