Algae become over-abundant when the water has too much of the nutrients that algae need for growth, a process called nutrient enrichment or eutrophication. Just as nutrient-rich fertilizers help plants grow in our farms and gardens, nutrients in the water cause algae to grow. Nutrients can come from non-point sources, such as fertilizers, sediment, and natural organic matter in stormwater runoff, or from point sources such as wastewater treatment plant effluent.

As well as the excursion, this day was a testing day of sorts.
Got a new backpack a few weeks ago to carry gear (Mindshift BackLight). Check! Carried some extra gear just to add some weight and it felt great.
Got some new boots this past week that are water proof. Double check!! Feet kept dry.
And wanted to test using my Canon wide angle on the Sony camera. Autofocus speed is not great, so switch to manual focusing which isn't a big deal for landscapes. Focus peaking makes it easy. Check!
A good day :))
My website: In the Moment Creations
I normally don't title my images because I am not creative with words...but couldn't resist this one.
I went to Seguin, Texas yesterday, about an hour drive from my house, to do a photo shoot and the rain was pouring down when I got there. I saw a picture of this dam on google and thought with the heavy rain it should make a really good shot. I started on the other side, in the rain, and took a few shots, but I wasn't happy with them. So, I drove out of the park over the bridge and into the old mill area, jumped out of the car, took a couple of shots and ran back to the car. Something only a photographer would do to get the best shot..:) I'm a little disappointed that you can't really see the rain that well..:(
Saffold Dam:
Named for William Saffold, who owned land here in the mid 1800's, Saffold Dam is typical of many mill dams built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally a natural rock outcropping, the dam was first improved by Henry Troell in the late 1800's when he added rock to the dam to raise the water level to power a cotton gin. The City of Seguin bought Troell's property in 1907 to further develop the river's hydroelectricity, and subsequent improvements have led to the establishment of a hydroelectric plant on the dam's south side.
Texas Trivia
The city of Seguin was named after Juan Nepomuceno Seguin was born on October 27, 1806, in San Antonio de Bexar, Province of Texas, Viceroyalty of New Spain, to Juan José María Erasmo Seguin and Maria Josefa Becerra. As the son of a postmaster, he assisted his mother in the business, while his father was off writing the Mexican Constitution of 1824. In 1825, he married María Gertrudis Flores de Abrego. They had ten children.
Juan Seguin was one of the defenders of the Battle of the Alamo. He was sent out as a runner to inform Houston how things were going. He returned with more troupes, but it was too late. The Alamo had fallen

The site lies in pecan bottoms used for thousands of years by the indigenous paleo-Indian hunter-gatherers, as evidenced by recent finds near the location. Over 1000 relics were discovered in a single day while moving soil during routine yard maintenance. An archaeological dig continues.
The Flores Crossing was a low rapids over a natural rock outcropping and gravel banks that created a ford across the Guadalupe River. In 1838 Flores established his ranch here on the south side of the river, across from Seguin. Being one of the larger operating ranches of the time, it was visited by German naturalist and geologist Ferdinand von Roemer in 1846. The beauty and clarity of the river and ford were described in his works, Die Kreidebildungen von Texas and ihre organischen Einschlüsse (1852).
The dam was named for Civil War veteran William Saffold. His father, Bird Saffold, came from Georgia and bought the property here in 1853 from Manuel N. Flores, a veteran of the battle of San Jacinto, and the brother-in-law of Juan Seguin, for whom the town is named.
In 1865, William Saffold built a home here on his extensive lands and became a successful businessman, operating a store near this location. He soon established a small mill, which was built in the style typical of this region, during the second half of the 19th century. From the second-story porch of his home, he could see the natural dam that he began to improve by adding boulders where possible. That way, dammed-up water rushed through the mill race with a stronger force to power his gristmill.
In the 1870s, the crossing below the dam was known as the Saffold Crossing, and it was used by several herds as part of the cattle drives heading north.
The dam was further improved after it was purchased by Henry Troell in the 1880s. Troell added more rock to further heighten the dam, raising the water level in order to provide sufficient power for a cotton gin. He added hydroelectric capabilities in 1895, which provided the first pumped water and electricity system to the city.[6] It was one of the first hydroelectric plants in Texas.
Troell later moved his mill operations, and in 1907, the City of Seguin, assisted by the efforts of Ferdinand C. Weinert, bought Troell's property to further develop the river's hydroelectricity.
I took this picture back in May when I visited Hoover Dam and the water levels were surprisingly low ... even tho I can only assume they must be even lower now !
I researched this and seems like Lake Mead is currently at the LOWEST level ever (excluding the time before the dam was built and was filling up, obviously) and is as of June at 1075.08 feet (was at 1076.57 during May when this picture was taken) which is a problem for the people who rely on it for their water supply and the electricity that the dam generates.
Engineers are working on installing new turbines that could work even if the water falls below 950 feet !

Wappa Dam, Sunshine Coast Queensland.
"The Wappa Dam is a mass concrete gravity arch dam with earth-fill abutments and an un-gated spillway across the South Maroochy River that is located in the South East region of Queensland, Australia. The main purpose of the dam is for supply of potable water for the Sunshine Coast region.
Completed in 1963, the concrete dam structure is 24 metres (79 ft) high and 138 metres (453 ft) long. The 12-thousand-cubic-metre (420×103 cu ft) dam wall holds back the 4,614-megalitre (1,015×106 imp gal; 1,219×106 US gal) reservoir when at full capacity. From a catchment area of 69.7 square kilometres (26.9 sq mi) with a mean annual rainfall of approximately 1,700 millimetres (67 in) that includes much of the Maroochy River, the dam creates an unnamed reservoir with a surface area of 74 hectares (180 acres). The un–gated spillway has a discharge capacity of 1,420 cubic metres per second (50,000 cu ft/s).[1] Initially managed by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, management of the dam was transferred to SEQ Water in July 2008 as part of a water security project in the South East Queensland region, known as the South East Queensland Water Grid.[5] The accompanying water treatment plant is also managed by SEQ Water. The Derwent Reservoir Dam which is in Derbyshire was used as a practice dam by the 617 squadron of the Royal Air Force, later to be know as the Dam Busters. One or two of the famous bouncing bombs probably bounced over the side of this huge wall. Today, thankfully, it is only water.
This is a 3 shot pano of the Dam on Banner Creek. I made my way out in front of the Dam as far as I could go by climbing over the various sized rocks and boulders to get as close to the center of the Dam as I could. Processed in Lightroom, CC Photoshop CC, and On1 Photo Suite 10 Effects.

Another shot from my Kayak. Longhorn Dam was built by the city of Austin and finished in 1960 as the last in a chain of Colorado River dams in central Texas started during the Great Depression. The dam derives its name because it was the ford across the Colorado for longhorn cattle drives as a part of the Chisholm Trail in the late 19th century.
The dam stands 36 feet (11 m) high and runs 506 feet (154 m) across. The "reservoir impoundment length," is 5.75 miles (9.3 km), creating Lady Bird Lake (formerly called Town Lake), a freshwater lake with a surface area of 525 acres (2.1 km2) and a 12.5 miles (20.1 km) shoreline. The original purpose of Lady Bird Lake was a cooling lake for Austin's Holly Street Power Plant, a 570 megawatt natural gas and fuel oil fired power plant. The plant ceased power production in September 2007, and will be deconstructed beginning early in 2012.
On July 10, 2007 two teenage girls canoeing on Lady Bird Lake were sucked through the dam. The lake was closed for recreation due to record amounts of rain in the months of June and July, however the girls were unaware of the ban. Neither of the girls was hurt.

Keystone Dam is located on the Arkansas River near Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Keystone Lake, above the dam is fed by the Arkansas River and the Cimarron River. Started in 1956 and completed in 1964, it provides electrical power and flood control for the Tulsa area.
Lawers Dam was constructed in 1951-6 as part of the Breadalbane Hydro-Electric Scheme. The dam is of massive buttress type, and measures 344m in length and 42m in height. It has been constructed across the S end of Lochan na Lairige, whose water level has been raised by 27m. The reservoir is fed by a system of tunnels and aqueducts from a 45sq km catchment area, and from it the water drops 415m to the Finlarig power station on Loch Tay.
Beavers have taken a liking to the Ruby Anthracite Creek, which flows between the Ruby Mountains and the Anthracite Mountains in western Colorado. Three dams are visible in this frame, but there are many more.
This made me wonder, once again, whether beavers have a sense of esthetics--they work so hard to create reflecting pools to live in. But on the other hand, one might say that they build dams to build homes safe from predators--their lodges have underwater entrances.

Shihmen Dam (Chinese: 石門水壩; literally: "Stone Gate Dam"; also spelled Shimen or Shihman) is a rock fill dam across the Dahan Creek in northern Taoyuan City. The dam's main purposes are water supply, flood control and hydroelectricity generation, and it holds the Shihmen Reservoir (石門水庫), Taiwan's third largest reservoir and artificial lake. Completed in 1964, the dam and reservoir now supply water to more than three million people in northern Taiwan. However, sedimentation issues have impacted and continue to threaten safe dam operations.
