The Mute swan actually gets its name from the fact that its is less vocal than other swan species and is one of the heaviest flying birds. A male swan is known as a Cob while the female is known as a Pen and has a lifespan of around 12 years in the wild and can reach 30 years if in an protected environment. One of three species of wild swans to be found in the UK and is the national bird of Denmark. The Mute Swan is unique in making a vibrant throbbing sound with the wings when in flight. A large group of swans can be called a school, ballet and regatta. No swan has ever broken any ones arm, this is a actually a complete myth.

Tundra Swans and Trumpeter Swans have been migrating through here in the past few weeks.
Parkland County, Alberta.

I grew up around water birds, lived in a town named for Swans, and have seen countless clutches raised.
However, this is the first time I'd ever seen the young riding high on the adult’s back.
Three adults and a cygnet. The Trumpeter Swan is larger than the more common Tundra Swan. It does not have the yellow spot on the lores like a Tundra, and also, unlike the Tundra, the dark facial skin extends around to the back of the eye, sometimes making the eye seem to disappear against that dark background.

An adult and two juveniles. There was a second adult with this family group, but just a little too distanced from these three for a good composition.
There were both Tundra and Trumpeter Swans at my location yesterday. I posted a group of Tundra Swans last evening.
