These are clearly not your run-of-the-mill mermaids! Their hair alone sets them apart; they clearly attach great importance to their "look." They were (and ARE) eye-catchers!
The Marie-Antoinette one in the foreground proves her mermaid status with her sea-green eyelashes. The one in the background, with the lovely milk-white shoulders has a starfish friend giving a lending hand as a decoration. How else would a starfish get to the Mermaid Parade?

...as the sun sets on Labor Day. A high point in anyone's life, if they've got the guts to get on that venerable roller coaster: something I'll never do!
I loved the way the white structure of the Cyclone took on an ever-so-slight yellow tint, thanks to the intense orange light of the setting sun, which also heightened the red of the cars and rails.
This aerial view was taken from the adjacent Astroland Tower...the only ride in Coney Island for wimps like me!

Update 2007: This is a highly nostalgic shot now; Astroland is no more (sniff!). The Astroland Tower is still standing, but no longer turns and rises. You can't even get near it, as far as I know. It's a relic of bygone days. Thankfully the Cyclone Rollercoaster is classified as a National Landmark and still lives, moves and shakes--to the delight of tens of thousands every summer!
Vintage image dated 1977 of the Coney Island amusement landscape at the time. Labeled on the back of the photo as the Big Three, we have the former Astroland Tower, the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone Roller Coaster. While I do respect the unknown photographer’s opinion, my Big Three, as a New Yorker, for 1977, are Son of Sam, the Blackout and the Yankees winning the World Series. Memorial Day: Zamperla's Discovery Ride --renamed the Eclipse at Luna--in action. It's similar to a HUSS Frisbee. That's the landmark Cyclone Roller Coaster across the street.

Leaving Coney Island Brooklyn on F train, Labor Day, September 4, 2017. First stop was West 8th Street New York Aquarium. Wonder wheel and famous 90 year old wooden Cyclone Roller Coaster can be seen in Video, as well as Deno's Amusement Park. Coney Island has a long history. Coney Island has street cred, a grit even today, that is rapidly vanishing in allot of New York. I believe Coney Island Brooklyn will always attract people searching for that edge. It still lives at Coney.
On April 15,, 1994, I drove to Coney Island (Brooklyn) New York to Photograph some of the attractions on the Boardwalk Here are two photos of the Cyclone Roller Coaster, which I both rode and photographed.
I took these two photographs with my Minolta Maxxim 5000 35 mm SLR Film Camera with Slide Film, I scanned the slides to generate these Electronic Images.
