Introduction: Bamford's root cutter
Date: 1920 - 1940 (c.)
Description: A root cutter made by Bamfords Ltd of Uttoxeter. Root cutters were used to chop turnips into slices suitable to feed farm livestock. This model was collected from Bamfords factory and was belt driven, using a stationary engine, water wheel or horse power.
Bamfords was founded in Uttoxeter in 1871 by Henry Bamford and made water pumps, taps and agricultural machinery. Joseph Cyril Bamford split off from the Bamford company in 1945 to set up what has become known as JCB - J C Bamford Excavators Ltd.

this is a 'ripper' that i use at work to chomp away large amounts of material from a piece of metal at once. it is used in a milling machine and is about 10 % carbide which makes it extremely difficult to break.

The female leaf cutter bee uses these sections of leaf to line the brood cell where she will deposit a single egg and provision it with pollen and nectar. The bees look for ready made cavities to nest in or, as in this case, they will excavate a chamber in soft, rotting wood as evidenced by the pile of debris at the bottom of this picture.
