Well, it's kinda hard to see here, but there was a slight layer of mist drifting over the water... you gonna have to take my word for it... lol

Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami, FL
Saturday morning I was invited for another sunrise shoot at the Deering Estate at Cutler. At first we didn't think there were any clouds at all, but when we got to the keyhole we saw this or a version thereof as the colors kept changing from a deep orange to red to yellow as the suns started to come up.

Sorry, if I am a bit slow on commenting on your shots. Our internet at home crapped out and of course Comcast can't figure out what's wrong and is trying to tell us we have perfect signal strength. Err... no!

It's time for another long(ish) exposure shot. This one is only 60 seconds though an instead of shooting straight down the keyhole I turned my camera to the right to just capture on side of the seawall. Love the movement of the clouds.
And looking at the shot on the computer it appears I have captured a ghost as well. ;-)

Yesterday morning I had the honor to shoot sunrise together with a few chosen photographers at the Deering Estate. Thanks so much Diego for giving me this opportunity.
It was a very still morning giving us perfect reflections and the clouds were fabulous too.

This is the first shot I took in "pitch black" conditions at the Deering Estate during our autumnal equinox shoot.
I couldn't believe how dark it still was. Usually there's at least some light at the horizon. But with all the clouds it was really, I mean REALLY, dark. For a moment we were all just standing there, wondering if we will be able to get anything at all at this early hour. I had to try it.
This is a 2 min 30 sec exposure taken at ISO-400. I could've left the shutter open a little longer... maybe, you never know. It's a tad noisy, but not as noisy as the shots I took last week at the lighthouse. In those shots I got a ton of LE noise that looks like white snow and noise reduction is doing nothing.

One more from last weekend and then I'll be back to some more shots from the homelands. Promise! :-)
Twice each year, during the vernal and autumnal equinox, the sun rises right in the center of the keyhole boat basin at the Deering Estate.
Thanks again Bev for organizing this sunrise photo shoot on the perfect morning. :-)
Just a quick one this morning ...
Some of my friends are partaking in a sunrise shoot this morning at the Deering Estates in Cutler Bay. I didn't choose to attend this one for some reason. But when I woke up this morning, I wondered how their sunrise will look. As you know, no two sunrises are ever the same ... sometimes not even when you're standing next to another photographer at the same time.
See, to me a sunrise is all about a new day, a new beginning, a chance to start off fresh. It's also about your interpretation of that moment ... when the light just begins to pop, usually well before the actual sighting of any sun. Everyone sees it different, everyone composes it different. During the fall equinox of 2014, this is one of the ways that I "saw it".
Hope that my friends are having an awesome sunrise shoot. Can't wait to see what they come back with. :-)

Of course the weekend is here and all the clouds just disappear. They were gorgeous all week when I had to go to work. But even without the clouds it was a beautiful morning and I had a great time.

Oh wow! I am completely blown away by the response to this shot. Thanks so much for all the kind words and faves. I truly appreciate every single one of them. Please bear with me is I make it to all your photostreams. It may take me a while. Many thanks again!

Yesterday morning I met up with a bunch of photographers from the "Shoot Miami" meetup group to shoot the sunrise at the Deering Estate which opened its doors early to offer members of the group a shot at the sunrise. The park officially opens at 10:00 am and I actually decided in 2008 to boycott the place as they don't allow tripods. I am not sure if this has changed, but obviously they allowed us to use tripods for sunrise.
A got a few shots from this vantage point, Deering's keyhole-shaped boat basin which I'll upload over the next few days I guess. This is the first I took and it's again a long exposure, although nowhere near as long as yesterday's upload. This is "only" a 240 sec. exposure.
TGIF!!
In late December, several of us were able to shoot winter's arrival (well, the official one anyway, since "winter" is a rare bird in south Florida) at the Deering Estate in Cutler Bay. I'm not sure that there's anywhere more beautiful and somewhat iconic for a Florida sunrise that there. Every day offers a different sunrise as the clouds and colors, as well as the surface of the water changes, so one never gets bored with sunrise there.
While many images were taken that early morning, I chose this tighter crop. I loved the way that the colors were popping out in both the sky and in the waters reflection below. What do you think?
2014 was an amazing year for Tom & I. To re-cap the year with us, check out the new blog post at:

Sunrise at the Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami, FL
And here's the sun. I really didn't think it would make it through those clouds, but it did.
Good Morning!
Well, actually by now, it's more like good evening, but it's a first for me. What you ask? This is a rare moment when I actually shoot an image and post within that some day! WooHoo!
So, this morning I met up some of my south Florida friends for a sunrise shoot, which seemed totally doomed as late as last night, as the south Florida skies were nasty, with torrential rain, windy squalls, thunder, and lightning. When I retired for the evening last night, I checked the weather forecast and it gave an all clear for this morning, at least until noon. So with 3 hours sleep, I woke up and made the trek down to the Deering Estate in Cutler Bay (Miami) in the wee hours. I was glad that I did.
While the sunrise never materialized as we had hoped, the skies were interesting, the colors as well, the company was awesome ... well, except for the no-see-ums. :-) My prayers from yesterday were answered regarding the delay in the rain.
Here's just one of the numerous images that I took this morning, as the new dawn prepared to make its first appearance. I don't think that there's anywhere in south Florida that provides a better backdrop for what nature has to offer on any particular day.
After an equal 3 hr nap when I returned, I thought that I would process a few prior to returning to my many Alaskan images. I will begin to post them sporadically starting tomorrow. Thanks for your patience. :-)

Here's another shot from a sunrise shoot at the Deering Estate a few weeks ago. We really got lucky with the sky that day.
First and foremost, I want to wish my mother a very Happy Birthday! She has always been there for me my entire life ... full of smiles and encouragement. I couldn't have asked for a better one. <3
About a week or so ago, I had the opportunity to photograph the sunrise, as seen from the Deering Estate in Cutler Bay (Florida). It's truly a special place ... and to celebrate the upcoming fall season there is especially rewarding. See, this day was the fall equinox and the sun rises smack in the middle of the boat basin at the estate. OK, I know what you're thinking ... hey, that doesn't look like the middle. It's not, but the warm golden colors were just too hard to resist. :-)
On this particular morning, the water was as calm as could be. Even the temperature on that morning seemed to be cooperating a bit ... if just those no-see-ums would have gotten the memo to not show up. Seriously, they can eat you alive! However, when you're in the middle of a shot, you don't feel them because the beauty captivates your senses. Sometimes you get lucky with fish jumping, birds flying, or even a SUP'er passing through your view.
Either way, it's always a special morning ... well worth the 3:30 am wake up call ... and fun to share it with good friends as well.
Thanks for stopping by to view.

Another shot from the archives...
So different from what we got last Saturday. Given the choice I think I prefer smooth reflections over clouds in the sky. Of course reflections AND clouds would be best. :-)

Happy 1st day of fall... bring on the pumpkin spice lattes and all the other fall goodies... I had pumpkin oatmeal for breakfast this morning. :-P
Anyhow, Sunday morning we got up bright and early to drive down to Cutler and meet up with friends at the Deering Estate for a sunrise shoot.
Twice a year, during the vernal and autumnal equinox the sun rises right in the center of the keyhole boat basin and it's quite a sight to see. Last year we got an absolutely amazing sunrise and we hoped for a repeat this year. Unfortunately the clouds had other plans. It was completely overcast except for some tiny breaks in the clouds to the northeast. Color was limited and there certainly was no sunrise to be seen.
Even so, we all had fun, including the mosquitoes and noseeums... especially the noseeums. I still feel them crawling on me... arrgh!

Saturday morning I had signed up again for another sunrise shoot at the Deering Estate. Being the start of spring the sun was again rising in the center of the keyhole boat basin.
It was a beautiful still morning, albeit cloudless - a few clouds would have been nice, but oh well, you make due with what you get.
I shot this a few minutes after sunrise as the sun was coming up behind the little mangrove island to the left of the boat basin entrance.

Taken as the sun was breaking the horizon. It was amazing to watch. I don't think I ever had such a clear view of the sun rising.
And I can't believe it's been a month already since I took this... where did the time go?

Sunrise at the Deering Estate at Cutler yesterday morning...
I lost track of how many times I have been here. Yesterday was the first time I didn't get any reflections. It was so windy. Knocked me almost over. Also there was lots of sea foam floating around in the boat basin. Another first. And actually only the second time for me that I have encountered sea foam, the first time was only a few months ago at Marineland.
A Royal Tern (Thalasseus maximus) begs its parent for food, seemingly to no avail. These terns were roosting on some jetty remnants at the entrance to Black Point Marina, Cutler Bay, FL as we steamed back in to port from a pelagic excursion.
I've seen this Red Shouldered Hawk in the same location before. He swoops in quietly and sits on the branch of the same tree. He's so beautiful.

This week, the blog post features images from the gorgeous sunrise shoot at the Deering Estate. About once each month, the staff of Miami-Dade Parks & Recreation allow photographers to opportunity to photograph the boat basin view from the estate. It overlooks the bay with the "keyhole" of the boat basin being lined with fabulous royal palm trees. During the spring and autumn equinox, the sun rises directly in the middle of that keyhole, which is quite beautiful.
You never know what you're going to get ... sun, rain, clouds, clear sky ... and since you reserve your spot in advance, you take what you get. Though the view has always been quite different, it has never disappointed.
Once in awhile you might be lucky enough to get some stand-up paddle boarders or kayakers paddle by, or in this case, some early morning birds flying by in front ot the golden colors which emerge with the rise of the sun. No better way to start the morning ... a new beginning ... quiet and peaceful. :-)
Thanks for stopping by to view and wishes for a wonderful holiday weekend.

Let me take a short break from the Austria pictures (and all that green). But fear not, I have many more to come... :-P
Anyway, yesterday morning we got up bright at early at 4:30 am to drive down to Cutler and meet up with our friends at the Deering Estate for a sunrise shoot.
The weather couldn't have been better... the clouds and colors were amazing. And we couldn't have picked a better day. Twice a year, during the vernal and autumnal equinox the sun rises right in the center of the keyhole boat basin. And that's what we all were waiting for...
Thank you Bev for organizing the meet up on the perfect day! :-)
I only wish we could have gone in a little earlier, 6:40 am was already a little late for playing with long(ish) exposures as it was already quite bright.

Thanks so much for your kind comments and faves of yesterday's shot. I had a hard time deciding which one to upload next.
So I figured after I shared the first shot I took, I'll share the last one I took that day at the keyhole boat basin. The sun finally had made it through the clouds. And we got our sunrise some 20 minutes after the sun should have been up. ;-)

Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami, FL
I have many more shots from Austria, but to get some color in there (especially on this dreary day) I thought I share another shot from our sunrise shoot at the Deering Estate today.
On this Sunday morning, I began to think about a different Sunday morning ... 3 weeks ago on the March equinox. It's also the beginning of the spring season, a day that many of you look forward to, knowing that the winter weather is on its way out. To those of us in south Florida, it's not as anticipated, unless of course you want to photograph the equinox as seen through the middle of the boat basin at the Deering Estate.
During the equinox (which officially was the next day), the sun rises directly in the "keyhole" of the royal palm tree lined boat basin. On this day, there was little to no wind, which helped make magnificent reflections on the glassy water surface. There were also no clouds, which at first I was disappointed about. Then I realized that the golden glow at the moment before the sun officially made its presence know at the horizon was just gorgeous and might have been lost with clouds. Just goes to show, sometimes you don't get what you thought you wanted, but get something else just as beautiful. :-)
Thanks for stopping by to view on this wonderful Sunday morning. Hope the rest of your weekend is fabulous.

I thought I give you a (short) break from the air show shots and share another shot from last weekends sunrise at the Deering Estate. I was quite surprised that the sun made it through those clouds and almost missed it as I was on the other side of the trees as the sun started to come up. I quickly ran back to the amusement of everyone there to grab a few shots.
TGIF! Have a great weekend!
Deering Estate at Cutler, Miami, FL
I have been busy cleaning out my archives and computer hard drive to get it ready for the gazillion shots from Austria, which I am about to take (I hope... lol). Doing so, I came across a few shots taken at the Deering Estate during one of our sunrise shoots there. I remember the clouds on that day weren't too impressive, besides one can only take so many shots of the palm trees at the keyhole boat basin, and I wondered off to take some shots of the buildings all lit up. It was almost too bright when I took these. Guess I couldn't tear myself away in time from the boat basin after all... lol
