So this weekend was the weekend of the Staff Christmas party. On Friday the papers were reporting a massive increase in emergency services staff over this weekend and even some claims that field hospitals were being set up in binge drinking “hot spots”, as office party revellers drowned their sorrows and acted inappropriately after another year of biting their lip and taking what their given.
I myself was out this weekend on my very own, and my very first, Staff night out. I had literally nothing to compare it to and had not an enormous idea of what to expect. The day before the party a customer was asking my boss Austin what we were doing for our staff party, to which he replied “Getting drunk and acting inappropriate”. i thought to myself, oh shit…this is the PLAN?
After getting stuck into my nutroast and getting involved in the conversation at the table my mind was soon put at ease and it suddenly felt very different from the Staff Christmas party i was imagining. No one was photocopying their private parts or insulting the bosses or starting fights or making fools of themselves(or at least were being appropriately innappropriate). After our meal we ended up at a comic book launch at the CCA for the upcoming publications of the new volumes of 2HB, Dancehall, Gnommero, Marbled Reams, Uncle Chop Chop and Victor & Hester. A really great night of film, performance, music and installation work that one of my bosses had helped contribute to. It was fair to say it was not your average Staff Party, but it was entirely conducive with staff of the Art School Refectory and we lapped it up!
After the stories i’ve read and the stereotypes i’ve formed in my brain, i’m very happy not to have fallen into some of the more tedious social norms of working life, though for the next 48hours im on high alert for people tagging facebook, regardless…cant be too careful.

Alphabet designed to represent me as a person: who I am, what I do, where I'm from, etc...
I used each of the letters that spell out my name to show the physical aspect of me that people usually see; such as things I wear or have with me. I showed this by incorporating illustrated images of them on to the letters. I then used the remainder of the letters to communicate different things about me, such as where I'm from, words that I say, etc. I kept these designs more simple by just using words/symbols within the letters so that there is a clear distinction between them. I hand drew each of the letter designs to represent the fact that I am hand made by myself and I am who I want to be, not what someone else has made.
I used a series of colours then with the designs to show the fact that I am bright and creative. For the background, I used a selection of photos of people I am close to and places I have been. Then, using a bokeh style I made them look worn to represent the fact that they are timeless memories, and presented each of the designs to look like a series of polaroid pictures.

“4me4you” visits Pertwee Anderson & Gold Gallery which showcased work by Tom Gallant; Che Lovelace; Boo Ritson; Steve Goddard; SWOON;Clarisse d'Arcimoles; Annie Kevans.
..>>>Pertwee Anderson & Gold Gallery...>>>
Tom Gallant ~ Gallant examines the pathologies underlying the west’s continuing fascination with pornography and the culture of collecting. His interest in Victorian decorative craft and his training in the traditional Far-Eastern techniques of Kirigami and Origami are united in his works in which highly intricate shapes are cut and folded from pornographic magazines.
Che Lovelace ~The social and cultural environment of Trinidad and Tobago is central to Che Lovelace’s work with much of the past decade spent visually exploring themes related to the Trinidad Carnival. The body, celebrated therein, be it costumed, exposed, extended or elaborated, as invitation shield, or as a weapon is a central theme. The paintings exist somewhere inside these suggestions with the Carnival becoming “an index of forms and plastics choices…creating a dialogue between language in carnival and language in painting”.
Boo Ritson ~ Boo Ritson is an instinctive painter utilising the entire body as a canvas. Working with a household palette of vivid plastic colour, her paintings depict fictional characters whose narrative is drawn from an American TV and Film culture. This results are at once expressionistic, yet highly controlled and choreographed in their conception and creation
Steve Goddard ~ Steve Goddard takes inspiration from social and cultural history, tribalism and South American popular culture, as well as contemporary and ancient textiles, fabrics, frames and artefacts. His interest in texture reflected in the customised frames that are intrinsic to his work; his paintings are often born out of an interesting frame. The artists buys frames from flea markets, antique shops and auctions and customises them with fabric and other materials.
SWOON ~ Swoon is a Brooklyn based artist whose life sized woodcuts can be found on walls in various states of beautiful decay cities around the world. The scope, variety and ambition of Swoons projects is hugely impressive.
Clarisse d'Arcimoles ~ Fascinated by the irretrievability of the past and photography’s strength top make memories tangible. Clarisse’s work frequently depicts human vulnerability examining identity and intimacy.
Annie Kevans ~ Kevans uses our familiarity with public figures to draw attention to “the elephant in the room”. With her “Collaborators” series, Kevans profiles famous figures such as Coco Chanel and Gaston Louis Vuitton, revealing their secretive and little-known collaboration with the Nazis during World War II. With these works, the artist investigates collective memory and the manipulation of reputations to fit an ideal. The works in “Girls”, which looks at the sexualisation of childhood, sees child stars such as Brook Shields, Britney Spears and the Olsen Twins take on an almost eerie appearance, their wide-eyed naivety counteracted by sensuously plump red lips and semi-nudity.Having an affinity for the marginalized, Kevans paints figures overlooked, exploited, or objectified within the context of history or contemporary culture, imbuing her subjects with a tangible humanity and sensuality.
