Late last November, I shared a suspicious looking currywurst with my husband and woke in the middle of the night with a stomach ache. He said he was feeling queasy. I rolled over and went back to sleep. If it was serious, it would wake me again.

And it did, so I got up and read the entire internet twice searching for symptoms of appendicitis. Hmm, yes, could be. So I went back to sleep because everyone says it is very painful when it gets bad and I thought I'd just check in with my doctor in the morning. Besides, if it was serious, it would wake me again.

And it did, and this time I could hardly walk. The ambulance came and took me away to the emergency room where doctors poked and prodded, took my blood, and poked some more. Maybe they were trying to pass the time until an operating room was available.

When I woke much, much later, I was sans appendix and the doctor had all sorts of gooey photos of my innards and slimy stories to tell me about infection and decay. I nodded, thanked him, sent him on his way with his photos and his stories and went back to sleep.

When I woke again the pain medication was wearing off and I touched my belly with my mind. There was a big, dark, empty hole in there where the pain had been. I marveled at it for a moment and went back to sleep.

The next time I woke and visited the emptiness again, I found it still deeper than I remembered, but now it was not empty. To my delight, while I slept, a small galaxy bloomed in there. She grew and expanded very quietly and didn't disturb me at all with her soft glowing and pulsing and wherever I looked was a serene darkness and every imaginable planet and star.

The surgeon was very kind. He must have put her there as a little surprise when he took my appendix out. Maybe she had been hanging around the operating room looking for a loving home for awhile. Now, she has one with me. Her name is Angeleka-9 and this is her portrait.

You can find Currywurst throughout Berlin.

Train station food to tide us over on our way to my first interpreting gig.

we had to do it - stop at the imbiss stand and get currywurst.

This has got to be one of the worst, I could not even make myself swallow one piece. Picture looks good though.

Helt og aldeles uundværlig på en tur til Berlin er det at få en ordentlig currywurst! Christina og jeg udviklede en form for afhængighed af de krydrede pølser..

I took this photo at my local supermarket named Reve (sounds like raver). Currywurst is pork sausage with a ketchup and curry sauce. Usually served with fries (pommes) it's one of Berlin's famous dishes. I can't say I eat much of it or love it but I do see the locals chowing it down. Of course I don't think many people eat this frozen variety! This photo is from the weblog The Berlin Image: theberlinimage.blogspot.com/

Die leckere Bochumer Currywurst vom Bratwursthaus

This is a "national dish" in the Ruhr Area in Germany, with this weather the crowds are still missing :-)

Das gehört im Ruhrgebiet dazu, bei diesem Wetter hält sich der Andrang natürlich in Grenzen :-)

Reminder of a childhood growing up with Wilhelm Busch tales: 19th century dark-humoured children's stories and no smart phones. Also, lots of German Imbiss style fast food.
