One of seven Canadian Airforce CF-188A's night stopping at Prestwick tonight on the way to the Mediteranian to help in support of the UN no fly zone over Libya.
Also passing through Prestwick tonight was a P-3 and two A310 tankers to support the fighters one of which is in the background of this frame.
In June 2010, the Saville Inquiry published its report into the killing, in 1972, of 13 unarmed civilians by the British Army in Derry, Northern Ireland. The inquiry sat for 12 years and cost more than £190 million – the longest and most expensive inquiry in British legal history.
The event, known worldwide as Bloody Sunday, was one of the most notorious in the long history of The Troubles. Among those present that day at a civil rights march was Father Edward Daly, a local priest. Under gunfire, he waved a bloodstained handkerchief as he led a group of people carrying the dying John Duddy, a teenager, away from the mayhem. This harrowing scene has become probably the most vividly enduring image of The Troubles, and to this day is depicted in a wall mural in Derry (top image).
In his book Ireland – A Terrible Beauty (1976), Leon Uris wrote: “For a time Father Daly had to leave Derry, for the agony of it had become unbearable. Then, in one of the hierarchy’s most enlightened decisions, he was named Bishop of Derry. This most Christian of men and most gentle of souls returned... for he was incapable of doing less.”
In my journalistic days with Thames Television, I was fortunate enough to work in Northern Ireland for some years during The Troubles, and I came to personally know the Bishop as a man of great humanity and integrity. In the bottom image, I’m on the left and Peter Taylor, now a veteran BBC reporter specialising in global terrorism, is on the right. The photograph was taken after we’d recorded an interview (unrelated to the events five years previously) for the This Week programme on 27 January 1977.

This flag was exhibited on a bulletin board in 2005 at Capital Hill Gifted and Talented Magnet Shool in St. Paul. The student, who was in the 6th grade when he/she made this , is now a senior in High School. Previously I did not want to name the school for fear that it might alert federal agents to investigate and intimidate the teacher or the school for being "anti-american"! That was 6 years ago though . . There is a great debate below this image and the other images of other student's flags that deals with issues such as brainwashing kids with liberal political propaganda and patriotism, etc.

May 29, 2013 -- On May 29, 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest. Since then, more than 3,000 climbers have reached the summit of the world’s highest mountain. After 16 years on the run, Ratko Mladić is now where he should be – in a jail, awaiting trial for genocide and other war crimes. While this monster and his swaggering soldiers were rampaging across the Balkans, for a brief period I was there, producing television news reports.
This was Vukovar, which was all but totally destroyed by Bosnian Serb forces in 1991. With my film crew I got in a few days after the final onslaught, in which more than 3,000 men, women and children were killed. To this day I’m still shocked to have witnessed such total and depraved inhumanity.

Ronnie Biggs, one of the 'Great Train Robbers' of 1963, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for his part in this audacious crime, but he escaped from jail, went on the run and in 1974 he hoved up in Brazil, where he fathered a child – thereby making extradition to the UK impossible.
At the time, I was a journalist working for This Week, Thames Television's international current affairs programme in London. I flew out to try and set up an interview with him, but because he'd already signed an exclusive contract with a tabloid newspaper, the answer was 'no'. So all I got was this quickly-grabbed snapshot outside his flat in Rua Prof Gastão Baiana, Rio de Janeiro. With his eyes firmly focused on the ground, it's hardly an award-winning image – but given the circumstances, it was better than nothing and it captures a moment in time.
The Great Train Robbery was a sensation in 1963, not just because of the audacity of the operation, but also because the 15-strong gang escaped with £2.6 million in used banknotes – a staggering amount of money at the time and the equivalent of around £50 million today.
Eventually, Biggs returned to the UK voluntarily in 2001 when he was in need of medical treatment. It's worth stating that he remained a controversial and notorious criminal right through to his death on 18th December 2013 at the age of 84.
