The river cant freeze up downriver from the Cornwall Dam due the swift current. Consequently, it's a great place for hoar frost when it's damn cold. The view is from the shore of the St. Lawrence River at the OPG visitor's centre. The Seaway Dam is partially obscured by river mist.

I have always being impressed when I came across stones that seat in a river with strong current flowing through. It seems so fragile but yet it never failed to prove its strength.

Hey y'all! I'm currently editing this wedding. A section is up on the blog already, for those who are interested in my people photos. www.fardodopstra.com/blog/2016/11/05/bruiloft-stania-state/

I think it is our best wedding yet and I'm kinda proud of the pictures and how much we've learnt this year.

Hope you have a great Sunday and hi to the Grandhuman whom I know to be lurking here. She rang me the other day to tell me "I know you are way too busy because you are not on Flickr anymore." Mums are always right.

If at first you don't succeed try try again goes the saying and tonight was one of those occasions. I saw on the weather apps there was meant to be a brief period of clear skies so nipped out in to the night to my current favourite electricity pylon.

I shot this last week and relied on a nearby telecoms mast to light up the pylon but I wasn't satisfied with the results. Roll forward a week and I think I may have overdone it!

Sunset - beach - Tanji bird reserve - The Gambia: Tanji Bird Reserve was established in 1993 primarily for its ornithological importance which is evident from its current species list which is over 259 species from 61 different families, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. This large diversity of birds results from the range of habitats present combined with location of Tanji on the coast of West Africa . For European migrants, Tanji bird reserve is one of the first stops offshore and offers both a safe haven as well as good feeding opportunities.

The Tablas de Daimiel National Park is a protected natural area in Spain that protects the wetland of the same name. It is located in the municipalities of Daimiel and Villarrubia de los Ojos, in the province of Ciudad Real, autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. It is also a special protection area for birds (ZEPA) and part of the La Mancha Húmeda Biosphere Reserve. With 192,025 visitors annually (2015), the Tablas de Daimiel is the thirteenth most visited national park in Spain.

The Tablas are one of the last representatives of an ecosystem called river tables that are formed when rivers overflow in their middle sections, favoured by semi-endorrheism phenomena and the lack of slopes. The wetland is formed at the confluence of the Guadiana River and its tributary Cigüela and is one of the most important aquatic ecosystems in the Iberian Peninsula due to the variety and quality of the fauna and flora that inhabit it, as well as the birds that use it for migratory passages. Las Tablas serves as a refuge for more than 2,000 species (plants, birds, insects, fish, reptiles...).

The park has wetlands formed from the confluence of the Guadiana River and its tributary Gigüela and is one of the most important aquatic ecosystems in Spain due to the fauna and flora that inhabit it. It is also important because of the large number of migratory birds that pass through the area, such as ducks and geese.

The Tablas de Daimiel can be considered, within a hydrological-structural classification of wetlands, as a "recharge hydro-wetland"; in theory, with a multi-year supply of surface water, which constantly recharges the underlying aquifer. Although in current times, it is sometimes more similar to a "hygro-wetland", with temporary recharge.

The Tablas de Daimiel are formed by the waters of two rivers of different nature, which makes them a privileged ecosystem: the water of the Gigüela river that comes from the Cabrejas moors in the Cuenca mountain range provides brackish water, while the Guadiana river provides fresh water that emerges from its springs approximately 15 km north of the national park, in the municipality of Villarrubia de los Ojos.

[DISCLAIMER THIS IS NOT A BLOG POST JUST A START OFF]

This seemingly thin book is heavy on wisdom. If you think of the chain that goes

data -> information -> knowledge -> wisdom,

a lot of books don't spend much time on the wisdom, and if you want wisdom you'll do well here. He has basically 20 short essays on aspects of dealing and resisting; a typical essay will start with an expression of the principle involved, follow with historical examples of how is was handled in the past, and conclude with concrete actions you can take which follow the principle.

It's good and I think you'd do well with it. After you've read it, leave it on the bathroom window sill for your guests.

Whyte Islet is a very small island on the shore of Howe Sound. People hike across the rocks to climb upon this hidden West Vancouver gem. Being aware of the changing tide is very important....the rocky path leading from the beach can quickly disappear when the tide comes in. Many people have been left stranded high and dry on this cute little island. The waterline indicates the water depth reached.

Whytecliff Park is located near West Vancouver's Horseshoe Bay Neighbourhood, the original name of which was White Cliff City, which opened in 1909. In 1914, Colonel Albert Whyte pressed for the spelling change from White Cliff City to Whytecliff. The Whytecliff area is now distinct from Horseshoe Bay. The park, originally Rockcliffe Park, was developed by W.W. Boultbee in 1926, and a private access road was cut from the Marine Drive highway at Batchelor Bay.

The fifty acre Boultbee estate was purchased by the Union Steamship Company in 1939 and the company operated a Bowen Island Ferry from Whytecliff during 1939-41 and 1946-1952

The park is currently home to more than 200 marine animal species and is the first Marine Protected Area in Canada. Sea lions can be seen sunbathing on the beach during summer.

I love Taza's Mexican style chocolate - my current favorite is raspberry crunch.

I usually zip down to their factory store a couple of times a year to stock up on a variety - thank goodness they also sell online so I can fulfill my cravings for this stuff while staying at home. I do miss my excursions to the store, though, as they have a much greater variety of yummy stuff there than is offered online.

Yes, It’s a dragonfly (Odonata)!

Most of us are aware of two types (sub orders): True Dragonflies (Anisoptera) and Damselflies (Zygoptera), however there is a third! “Anisozygoptera” (No vernacular name).

More details on the classification can be found here:

(www.mapress.com/zootaxa/2013/f/zt03703p045.pdf). (Thanks to Dr K. D. Dijkstra for the information).

There are currently only two known species of Anisozygoptera, one in Nepal and this one from Japan. They are called ‘Relics’ because Anisozygoptera is well represented in the fossil record, but has nearly died out….

Many thanks to Mr Hide Natsume and Mr. Kaz Ikeda for kindly taking me to see them! i'd have never found them without help. A great day I shall always remember.

India is currently facing a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 42°C in numerous cities across the country. This comes just weeks after India recorded its hottest March since the country’s meteorological department began its records over 120 years ago. This image, produced using data from the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission, shows the land surface temperature across most of the nation.

According to the India Meteorological Department, maximum air temperatures reached 43-46°C over most parts of Rajasthan, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh; in many parts over Gujarat, interior Odisha; and in some parts of Madhya Maharashtra on 28 April. Forecasters warned that heatwave conditions are expected to continue until 2 May.

Experts at the Indian Institute of Technology’s Water and Climate Lab stated that, in recent years, the number of Indian states hit by heatwaves has increased, as extreme temperatures become more frequent.

Owing to the absence of cloud cover on 29 April (10:30 local time), the Sentinel-3 mission was able to obtain an accurate measurement of the land surface temperature of the ground, which exceeded 60°C in several areas. The data shows that surface temperature in Jaipur and Ahmedabad reached 47°C, while the hottest temperatures recorded are southeast and southwest of Ahmedabad (visible in deep red) with maximum land surface temperatures of around 65°C.

The map was generated by using the mission’s Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer instrument. While weather forecasts use predicted air temperatures, this satellite instrument measures the real amount of energy radiating from Earth. Therefore, the map shows the actual temperature of the land’s surface pictured here, which is usually significantly hotter than air temperatures.

Sentinel-3 can monitor wildfires, map the way the land is used, provide indices of vegetation state, as well as measure the temperature, colour and height of the sea surface. For more information on the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission, click here.
