The Ottoman sultans' affinity for Chinese porcelain marks a fascinating chapter in the cultural exchange between the East and the West. Beginning in the 13th-14th centuries, the Ottomans actively imported Chinese porcelain, specifically pieces from the Sung, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Rather than adhering to the tradition of burying such items with deceased relatives, the Ottomans chose to integrate these exquisite porcelain pieces into the grandeur of the Topkapi Palace.

The collection at the Topkapi Palace is a testament to the Ottoman rulers' appreciation for the craftsmanship and aesthetic appeal of Chinese porcelain. Remarkably, even after more than 400 years, over 10,000 pieces have endured and are still part of the palace's collection. The preservation of these items is a testament to the care and value placed on them by the Ottomans.

Considering the daily use and proximity to the palace's kitchens and dining rooms, one might expect wear, breakage, and pilferage to have taken a toll on the collection. However, the pieces on display today defy these expectations by being in remarkably good condition. This highlights not only the resilience of Chinese porcelain but also the meticulous care and appreciation the Ottoman sultans had for these treasures.

The Topkapi Palace collection of Chinese porcelain stands as one of the most significant in Europe, showcasing the enduring legacy of cross-cultural interactions between the Ottoman Empire and China. The collection provides a unique glimpse into the historical and artistic connections that transcended geographical boundaries, enriching the cultural tapestry of both civilizations.

In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a woman and a nun share a moment at a gate, symbolizing community, trust, and compassion. The intricate ironwork frames the subjects while their contrasting attire—modern and traditional—reflects the blending of worlds. Subtle details in posture and expression convey a quiet narrative of understanding, kindness, and everyday life.

The vision of AiA is to educate through Art and promote cross boundaries multicultural understandings and exchanges. Indeed, AiA strong believes are that throughout photography, children's rhymes and drawings, we can share and learn about everyone's culture and everyone's appeal to happiness. The children illustrate those topics in their own way and are more likely to understand and welcome similarities and differences of all people on a worldwide scale.

The mission of AiA is to develop the creativity, curiosity and artistic sensitiveness of some children of the world by letting them discover the world of poetry, drawing and photography. AiA is convinced that the construction of a better and fair world needs to be transmitted through the education of the less advantaged person. Therefore, AiA has decided to focus its project on children, since in most countries they are only considered as half a person, and do not benefit from the right to express themselves. It is AiA's duty to give them a voice.

Tipi

Each painted tipi design has its own story, best told by the tipi owner. In general, the design of a tipi can be broken into three sections.

TOP: The top section reflects Father Heavens. In this part, you may see circles on a dark background, representing stars.

MIDDLE: The middle of the design represents the spirit world and mythology of the people. Here you will find representations of spiritual animals.

BOTTOM: The bottom part of the design represents Mother Earth. You may see a rounded design to represent hills There are often circles within these shapes. These may represent boulders in the water or rocks.

The Konstantine Eristavi Street area in Tbilisi, Georgia, is located in a historic and vibrant part of the city, close to some of the city’s most important cultural and religious landmarks, including the impressive Sameba Cathedral. The area offers a mix of local culture, everyday life and an authentic shopping experience in the small shops and markets. Sameba Cathedral, just a few minutes’ walk from Konstantine Eristavi Street, is one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world and an important symbol of Tbilisi. This architectural masterpiece dominates the city skyline, attracting tourists and pilgrims alike. Around Konstantine Eristavi Street and the nearby streets, you’ll find a variety of small shops that capture the essence of everyday life in Tbilisi. Many of these shops are family-run businesses, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to handmade souvenirs and traditional Georgian products. The area has a more local feel than the touristy areas in the old town, making it an interesting place to experience authentic Tbilisi. There are also small markets and street vendors in the area. Here you can find typical Georgian products such as fresh bread, spices, cheeses and wine, as well as clothes and household items. The atmosphere in the markets is busy and lively, with vendors offering their wares and customers haggling over prices. It is an ideal place to get in touch with the locals and learn more about their culture and customs. The area around Konstantine Eristavi Street has a mix of old and new buildings. Some streets are narrow and cobbled, giving a sense of historic charm, while others are more modern and wider. The proximity of the cathedral creates a peaceful, almost spiritual atmosphere, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the markets and shops.

The woman’s shop on the street is small, no bigger than a large cupboard, but it is well stocked with local produce. On simple shelves are displayed pieces of cheese, jars of honey and eggs. There are bags of herbs, and despite the limited space, she still has a nice assortment. The woman is friendly and calm, knows her regular customers well and takes the time to talk to them. The shop does not have a luxurious appearance, but it offers exactly what you need: fresh, local produce of good quality. People from the neighbourhood like to come here, not only to do their shopping, but also because of the friendly atmosphere and the personal attention that the woman always gives. It is a modest, but important part of daily life in the neighbourhood.

A gaijin (non-japanese foreigner) stops in his tracks, captivated by the beautiful young maiko making her way through Gion. In Tbilisi, loggias, conservatories and verandas are a common sight, especially in the older parts of the city. These enclosed balconies are often beautifully decorated and offer a unique way to enjoy the view of the city and its surroundings while being protected from the elements. Many of these loggias have a traditional architectural style, with colorful glass panels and sometimes wood carvings, which add to the charm of the buildings. They often serve as an additional living space, where residents can relax, tend to plants or enjoy a meal with a view. These elements make the enclosed balconies in Tbilisi a special and recognizable aspect of the city's architecture. In Georgian, it can also be specifically referred to as "balkoni" (ბალკონი), which simply means "balcony".

The Manneken Pis replica in Colmar is a unique symbol of friendship and solidarity between Colmar and Brussels. Donated by Adolphe Max, a former mayor of Brussels, after World War I, this gesture recognized the shared suffering and resilience during the war. Located at the corner of Rue des Marchands and Grand Rue, the statue is a faithful reproduction of the famous Brussels figure, adding charm and whimsy to Colmar’s streets – Colmar, Alsace Region, France

Koi in Yashiro Japanese Garden in Olympia, Washington, USA

This unique-looking Courtyard House 四合院 was once a hospital in the busy commercial blocks outside Beijing’s Gate of Righteous Yang 正陽門. The general layout of the complex includes 2 consecutive courtyards on the central axis, the wooden houses inside were decorated with rare colourful glass windows and traditional Chinese wood-carving doors. Moreover, the hospital’s street façade was specially designed with a layer of wooden ‘curtain wall’, imitating Western architectural styles with pilasters, wood-carving Ionic orders as well as large windows. This made the house extra distinctive in the old street.

This historical architectural complex has been listed as protected Courtyard House, and fully renovated in 2015 by MAD Architects. However the portico at the main entrance has been sealed off by glass doors. It is a private residence today. This photo was taken in 2009.

In 1756, the establishment of theatres and hotels in the Inner City 內城 of Beijing was prohibited by Emperor Qianlong 乾隆 (1711-1799). The capital city’s hospitality industry moved to the Outer City 外城 and gathered in front of the Inner City gates - especially the Gate of Righteous Yang 正陽門, since it was the central city entrance leading to the Forbidden City 紫禁城 and imperial ministries.

In 1906, the former Beijing railway terminal station was built right beside the Gate of Righteous Yang, which once again boosted hospitality industry in its near-city-gate area as it became the central destination of national-wide transportation and freight. Therefore, the historical blocks here – such as Dashilar 大柵欄 and the streets of Damochang – were exceptionally rich in historical restaurants, hotels, brothels and luxurious shops selling rare goods from all over the empire.

In addition, thanks to the spirit of cultural exchange brought in by international trade, these narrow streets also became a showcase where new exotic fashions would be debuted. This little hostel tower was one of those once fashionable early ‘Western Overseas 西洋’ style urban buildings appeared near Beijing’s Gate of Righteous Yang. The adoption of concrete pseudo-pilasters as well as Western Ionic column-top orders on the surface of local grey-brick walls formed a unique sense of inculturation. Such new style was the herald of much more drastic social and aesthetic revolutions that took place in China later. Unfortunately, this building was demolished around 2005 during the construction of a new motorway.

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the Japanese Tea Garden is a serene escape that offers a glimpse into traditional Japanese culture and design. Originally created as a “Japanese Village” for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, this five-acre garden is the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States. Landscape architect Makoto Hagiwara transformed it into a permanent feature, infusing it with authentic Japanese aesthetics.

As you step through the iconic drum bridge, you’re greeted by meticulously designed landscapes that include koi ponds, zen gardens, and stepping stone paths. The garden’s architectural highlights are a testament to traditional craftsmanship, featuring pagodas, stone lanterns, and a Shinto shrine. The five-story pagoda, a gift from San Francisco’s sister city Osaka, stands majestically among towering pines and maples, which change colors with the seasons.

Springtime brings a burst of cherry blossoms, while autumn cloaks the garden in fiery reds and golds. The tea house, another architectural gem, offers visitors the chance to experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, fostering a sense of harmony with nature.

This verdant retreat is not just a feast for the eyes but also a cultural bridge between East and West. It stands as a living testament to San Francisco’s rich multicultural heritage and its commitment to preserving beauty across cultures. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the Japanese Tea Garden offers something for everyone.
