The Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, located in the Castle of Leiria, is a representative example of the Portuguese Gothic architecture of the 14th and 15th centuries, associated with the reign of King João I. Its original construction dates back to the 12th century, but it was later rebuilt, featuring characteristic elements such as ogival arches and high windows that allow light to enter, as well as a chancel with a ribbed vault. This religious space, which once served as a Cathedral, has undergone several changes over time and, after the extinction of the religious orders, has been adapted for cultural functions, such as concerts and conferences. The structure remains in limestone, contrasting with the wooden floor introduced in restoration interventions that aimed to preserve its architectural integrity while promoting its contemporary use. Thus, the church not only reaffirms the historical heritage of the Avis dynasty, but also adapts to the new times, reflecting a balance between the past and modernity.

this was palma during semana santa. not the polished view from postcards, but the moments in between – when the procession pauses, when a glance escapes the robe, when the mask slips just a bit. behind every tradition are people, gestures, breath. i wandered, asked, waited. sometimes they noticed, sometimes they didn’t. but i felt the weight of ritual brushing against the mundane.

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena, located inside Leiria Castle, is a significant example of Portuguese Gothic architecture, with construction begun by King Dinis in the 14th century. This temple, originally a palatine chapel, served as a place of worship for both the royal court and the local community. The polygonal apse, with its ribbed vault and slender ogival windows, allows natural light to enter, creating an atmosphere of serenity. After periods of neglect, especially after the 1755 earthquake, the building underwent several restoration interventions in the 20th century, regaining its dignity and adapting to new cultural uses. The Gothic features, including exposed stonework and limestone structure, reflect the historical importance of the monument. Today, the church is valued as heritage, serving as a venue for cultural events and visits, preserving the historical memory of the castle.

Shadow puppetry is an old tradition and it has a long history in Southeast Asia; especially in Indonesia. Shadow puppetry uses flat articulated figures (shadow puppets) to create cut-out figures which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent color or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A talented puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh.
