Day 071 - 365/2023 - A Never-Ending Journey

A female Yellowtail Black Cockatoo, sitting in a sheoak tree for breakfast. The heavy overcast turned to heavy rain shortly after : /

Walking around the silent and frozen Farmer's Park, the soft breeze through the leafless trees clung only by snow from the previous day's fall snow storm, is disturbed by ICE 6101 and DME 6093 throbbing up the meat of Stockton Hill's 1.9% grade with train 471. This day required a double up the hill, allowing for the sun to swing further to the west for the reminder of the chase out in the flats toward Rochester, as well as a two separate shots on the hill which is typically not able to be accomplished in the spots in accessible by car.

Abandoned power plant at the abandoned paper mill.

Watched a RSH swoop down to munch on insects and mice. Rarely do I catch these guys on the ground, so that was new. Laguna Lake.

I think this is my favorite photo in the set from the animal encounter. At this point, I was down on my belly. Claudia and I had to stay very still so we didn't frighten Audi. Even so, he would occasionally dart back into his habitat where he felt safe, only to emerge again when his curiosity overcame his fear of us.

Animal encounters like this one provide beneficial stimulation for an education animal, as well as much-needed funding for the zoo.

On investigating a strange noise in the garden I found this female blackbird working out how to get the tasty bits from a cockchafer beetle.

Mom brings delicious crunchy insects to her hatchlings.

Stow Grove park, Goleta, CA.

One of the fantastic Giraffe's at the San Diego Zoo. This is my youngest' favorite animal.

Utah County, Utah.

Walthamstow Marshes - Lammas Meadow at the height of the cold spell. Here the water table dropped back below the ground before the ice could get thick enough to walk on, leaving a thin layer above grass and mud.

When hordes of hungry migrating warblers descend on a swamp, one would think there would be a scarcity of insects, (but a few mosquitoes always seem to slip through the "gauntlet" and find my neck).

This Black-and-white Warbler found a tasty insect at Magee Marsh, Ohio.

Sitting on a boat, waiting to cast off for a trip to the island, this jusxtaposition of angled lines in bright and dark caught my eye. No chance to move around looking for the best POV, just WYSIWYG. Fiddled and diddled with it in post to bring out what I'd visualized. Running it up the flagpole for Sliders Sunday. Anyone care to salute?

Autumn showing off again!

Giant Otter, Ariranha - Pteronura brasiliensis

Another group at Encontro das Águas State Park. We watched a member of this group catch a large catfish.

Prey is perhaps a Jaú Catfish (Zungaro species, Pimelodidae).

Snowboarding or just bus boarding.

The early morning sun threatens to push through the winter fog on a frosty morning around this deserted barn and silo. Over 60 years ago before Child Labor laws were enforced, my father's shout at 5 a.m. up the stairs would awaken me for morning chores before school. Underneath my overshoes, the crunchy sound on my cold walk to the barn was punctuated by my nose and ears that stung with frostbite.

Delicious plastic bricks poured into a bowl and covered with fresh cow's milk. This extra crunchy feast is part of a balanced brickfast—and it *never* gets soggy!
