Ruby-crowned kinglet at the water feature.

Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, Sept 4, 2021.

Lots of activity the last few days, warblers, jays, goldfinches, doves and woodpeckers s well as both species of nuthatch.

Corthylio calendula

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is a tiny bird that lays a very large clutch of eggsโ€”there can be up to 12 in a single nest. Although the eggs themselves weigh only about a fiftieth of an ounce, an entire clutch can weigh as much as the female herself.

Orange-crowned Warbler is not as โ€˜flashyโ€™ as many of the other members of the New World Warblers family, but is attractive in its own right. And it has a wide distribution, covering most of the continent of North America south of the treeline in the Arctic over the course of the year (between breeding, migrating, and overwintering). This individual was seen in the Cariboo District of the province of British Columbia, in western Canada.

Purple-crowned Lorikeet

โ‰ โ‰ =================

When I first spotted this pair, I thought they were preparing their new home.

But it seems that the hole if partially filled with water, and they were bathing inside.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets in coastal southern Alaska and British Columbia are slightly smaller and darker colored than elsewhere in their range.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets are olive-green birds with a prominent white eye ring and white wingbar. This wingbar contrasts with an adjacent blackish bar in the wing. The โ€œruby crownโ€ of the male is only occasionally visible.

These are restless, acrobatic birds that move quickly through foliage, typically at lower and middle levels. They flick their wings almost as they go.

These little Birds rarely stop , constantly on the move.

Oh my goodness! This is a lifer for my yard birds. I've only seen one other bird of this species, and only got one shot of it (Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive 2016). This was in the front yard, in God's garden, playing in the sprinklers on the Simpson's Stopper bush. Am I blessed or what! Thank You, Jesus.

This is such a great bird for me (practically homebound). This is at the same time as the Orange-crowned Warbler! Isn't that just something!

The crowned sandgrouse (Pterocles coronatus) is a species of bird in the Pteroclididae family.

A couple years ago, I photographed a beautiful type of lion's mane fungus on this very same log. This morning, I found this crown coral fungus growing on it. Obviously, this decaying log has some very high standards as to the type of mushrooms it will host. Photographed in Upper Hixon Forest, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

Crown Drop

Trying to drop a crown onto a circular ball....I must be mad!

But I did it!

I do like creating problems for myself, as if catching the perfect drip doesn't require enough patience, and I struggle to get the lighting as I'd like, then I go and introduce a shiny glass ball to catch reflections,

Not bad for my first time at this, I have got a few ideas on how to improve it. ....watch this space....fingers crossed!

The white-crowned sparrow is a species of passerine bird native to North America. A medium-sized member of the American sparrow family, this species is marked by a grey face and black and white streaking on the upper head. It breeds in brushy areas in the taiga and tundra of the northernmost parts of the continent and in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific coast. While southerly populations in the Rocky Mountains and coast are largely resident, the breeding populations of the northerly part of its range are migratory and can be found as wintering or passage visitors through most of North America south to central Mexico.

Pomatostomidae (Pomatostomus ruficeps)

a man in the boreal north lies on his back on the cold ground at dawn...what are those treetops like? he's never really thought about the many miles a tree travels, in smallest cursive increments, each hour of every day...forever in motion, these stationary things

they are, in fact, like nothing but themselves...likeness is the sole problem of men

the spruces pour out messages in media of their own invention, they speak through their needles, trunks, and roots, they record in their own bodies the history of every crisis they've lived through

the five white spruces sign the blue air, they write; light and water and a little crushed stone demand long answers...nearby lodgepoles and jack pines demur; long answers need long time...and long time is exactly what's vanishing

the black spruces down the drumlin put it bluntly; warm is feeding on warm, the permafrost is belching...the cycle speeds up

farther south, broadleaves agree, noisy aspens and remnant birches, forests of cottonwoods and poplars, take up the chorus; the world is turning into a new thing

the man rolls over onto his back, face to face with the morning sky...the messages swarm him...even here, homeless, he thinks; nothing will be the same

the spruces answer; nothing has ever been the same

we're all doomed, the man thinks

we have always been doomed

but things are different this time

Ruby-crowned kinglet, Rondeau Provincial Park, April 26, 2023.

A regular visitor to the yard and water feature. Not sure how it lost the feathers at the edge of its bill.

Corthylio calendula.

This tiny bird is often hard to see in summer, when it lives high in tall conifers. In migration and winter, however, it often flits about low in woods and thickets, flicking its wings nervously as it approaches the observer. When it is truly excited (by a potential mate, rival, or predator), the male may erect his ruby-red crown feathers, hidden at other times. The song of the Ruby-crown is jumbled and loud, all out of proportion to the size of the bird.

Euphorbia milii (Crown of thorns / Corona de Cristo)

The crown of thorns is a species of flowering plant native to Madagascar. The common name is due to the thorns and deep red bracts referring to the crown thorn Jesus had to wear during his crucifixion and his blood.

It is a woody succulent subshrub or shrub growing to 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) tall, with densely spiny stems. The flowers are small, subtended by a pair of conspicuous petal-like bracts, variably red, pink or white, up to 12 mm (0.47 in) broad.

It's amazing what you can construct using an old Half Crown of 1951 vintage, and a few Polo mints .... it's a bit like "Blue Peter" .... "you know a couple of old toilet rolls .... other bits and bobs .... then suddenly you get a lovely Robot, or Aircraft, or something else .... Ha, ha."

๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜Š

A little information about the value of this English coinage.

One English Half Crown coin was valued at two shillings and sixpence .... equivalent to one eighth of a pound.

20 old shillings were equivalent to one English pound.

40 old sixpence coins were equivalent to one English pound.

"Those were the days!" .... when you knew money meant something .... well with all those heavy coins in your pocket .... "yeh .... the something was weight!"

Jingle, jingle.

๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜น

No wonder they had such large pockets way back when!

๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ต

No spearmint Polo's were hurt in the construction of this photograph .... "you may be glad to hear!"

Oh' .... but slowly sucked and gently dissolved in the mouth after the session .... and apparently .... that's ok in this PC world .... well had no complaints so it's really all good!

Happy Macro Monday everyone!

Please stay safe! ๐Ÿ˜ท

Boodjamulla National Park, QLD. I saw an adult male and female as well as a sub adult male bringing insects regularly to a nest hidden in the base of a pandanus palm. It was right next to the canoe hire launch ramp so would get quite busy at times. This didn't seem to worry the birds in the least.

Thanks for your views, faves and comments.

During non-breeding season, this warbler can be found in the southern US, Mexico and Central America. When it comes time for breeding this diminutive bird flies as far north and the northern most tip of Alaska.
