Ruby-crowned Kinglets in coastal southern Alaska and British Columbia are slightly smaller and darker colored than elsewhere in their range.

Ruby-crowned Kinglets are olive-green birds with a prominent white eye ring and white wingbar. This wingbar contrasts with an adjacent blackish bar in the wing. The β€œruby crown” of the male is only occasionally visible.

These are restless, acrobatic birds that move quickly through foliage, typically at lower and middle levels. They flick their wings almost as they go.

These little Birds rarely stop , constantly on the move.

Oh my goodness! This is a lifer for my yard birds. I've only seen one other bird of this species, and only got one shot of it (Lake Apopka North Shore Wildlife Drive 2016). This was in the front yard, in God's garden, playing in the sprinklers on the Simpson's Stopper bush. Am I blessed or what! Thank You, Jesus.

This is such a great bird for me (practically homebound). This is at the same time as the Orange-crowned Warbler! Isn't that just something!

A couple years ago, I photographed a beautiful type of lion's mane fungus on this very same log. This morning, I found this crown coral fungus growing on it. Obviously, this decaying log has some very high standards as to the type of mushrooms it will host. Photographed in Upper Hixon Forest, La Crosse County, Wisconsin.

Though barely larger than a hummingbird, this frenetically active bird can survive –40 degree nights, sometimes huddling together for warmth. They breed in the far north and montane west and visit most of North America during winter.

Crown Drop

Trying to drop a crown onto a circular ball....I must be mad!

But I did it!

I do like creating problems for myself, as if catching the perfect drip doesn't require enough patience, and I struggle to get the lighting as I'd like, then I go and introduce a shiny glass ball to catch reflections,

Not bad for my first time at this, I have got a few ideas on how to improve it. ....watch this space....fingers crossed!

Full Pink Moon Over South Tower of Golden gate Bridge in QingMing Day.

Qingming Festival (ζΈ…ζ˜ŽθŠ‚) is one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It falls on April 5th in 2023.

It is also called Tomb Sweeping Day as it is the time for Chinese people to show respect to their ancestors by cleaning their ancestors' tombs and placing offerings.

In addition, Qingming (ζΈ…ζ˜Ž) in Chinese mean 'clearness' and 'brightness'. It is the fifth of the 24 solar terTms of the traditional Chinese solar calendar, marking the start of the warm weather of spring and the beginning of farm work.

Here is a timelapse of full moon rising:

I used PlanIt to plan the alignment and locate the shooting spot.

I was startled to see this young white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) hunkering in the cold at the seed feeder this morning. He's a long way from the rest of his species, they having migrated to the Lower 48 and Mexico a couple of months ago.

Sweet little thing is not at all equipped to deal with winter here... no underlying fluff against his skin, and the weed seeds that are his diet have long been covered with a foot of snow...

While he is here and coming to the feeder, the chickadees are barely tolerating him and the larger birds totally scare him off.

He has been doing his best to manage prying open sunflower seeds, and also visits the peanut butter feeder.

I'm thinking it is likely a juvenile, (his first winter) his adult white stripe on his crown is still dull gray. Somehow he missed the need to get the heck out and migrate south with the rest of the sparrows.

The Grey Crowned crane (Balearica regulorum), also known as the African crowned crane, golden crested crane, golden-crowned crane, East African crane, East African crowned crane, Eastern crowned crane, South African crane, is a bird in the crane family, Gruidae.

The grey crowned crane is about 1 m tall, weighs 3.5 kg, and has a wingspan of 2 m. Its body plumage is mainly grey. The wings are predominantly white, but contain feathers with a range of colours, with a distinctive black patch at the very top. The head has a crown of stiff golden feathers. The sides of the face are white, and there is a bright red inflatable throat pouch. The bill is relatively short and grey, and the legs are black. They have long legs for wading through the grasses. The feet are large, yet slender, adapted for balance rather than defence or grasping.

Photographed during a Photography Safari on an early morning boat ride along the shores in Lake Baringo, Kenya.

The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum), is a bird in the crane family, Gruidae. It is found in eastern and southern Africa and is the national bird of Uganda. The name is due to its yellow crown of feathers, tipped with black. This crane moves gracefully in a most stately manner with a very dignified gait. In flight it is beautiful, using slow down strokes followed by quick upward strokes of its wings.

The Grey Crowned Crane has a breeding display involving dancing, bowing, and jumping. It has a booming call which involves inflation of the red gular sac. It also makes a honking sound quite different from the trumpeting of other crane species. Both sexes dance, and immature birds join the adults. Dancing is an integral part of courtship, but also may be done at any time of the year.

This beautiful Grey Crowned Crane was busy feeding in a swamp and was captured during a photography safari on a late afternoon game drive in Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya.

Ruby-crowned kinglet, Rondeau Provincial Park, April 26, 2023.

A regular visitor to the yard and water feature. Not sure how it lost the feathers at the edge of its bill.

Corthylio calendula.

This tiny bird is often hard to see in summer, when it lives high in tall conifers. In migration and winter, however, it often flits about low in woods and thickets, flicking its wings nervously as it approaches the observer. When it is truly excited (by a potential mate, rival, or predator), the male may erect his ruby-red crown feathers, hidden at other times. The song of the Ruby-crown is jumbled and loud, all out of proportion to the size of the bird.

Euphorbia milii (Crown of thorns / Corona de Cristo)

The crown of thorns is a species of flowering plant native to Madagascar. The common name is due to the thorns and deep red bracts referring to the crown thorn Jesus had to wear during his crucifixion and his blood.

It is a woody succulent subshrub or shrub growing to 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) tall, with densely spiny stems. The flowers are small, subtended by a pair of conspicuous petal-like bracts, variably red, pink or white, up to 12 mm (0.47 in) broad.

It's amazing what you can construct using an old Half Crown of 1951 vintage, and a few Polo mints .... it's a bit like "Blue Peter" .... "you know a couple of old toilet rolls .... other bits and bobs .... then suddenly you get a lovely Robot, or Aircraft, or something else .... Ha, ha."

πŸ˜πŸ˜ΉπŸ˜‚πŸ˜Š

A little information about the value of this English coinage.

One English Half Crown coin was valued at two shillings and sixpence .... equivalent to one eighth of a pound.

20 old shillings were equivalent to one English pound.

40 old sixpence coins were equivalent to one English pound.

"Those were the days!" .... when you knew money meant something .... well with all those heavy coins in your pocket .... "yeh .... the something was weight!"

Jingle, jingle.

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ή

No wonder they had such large pockets way back when!

😁😡

No spearmint Polo's were hurt in the construction of this photograph .... "you may be glad to hear!"

Oh' .... but slowly sucked and gently dissolved in the mouth after the session .... and apparently .... that's ok in this PC world .... well had no complaints so it's really all good!

Happy Macro Monday everyone!

Please stay safe! 😷

Between what appears like a wrinkly, "old guy" hand and a very mesmerizing eye this black crowned night heron could pass for a hypnotist, luring in unsuspecting prey. This image is uncropped.
