Finally got one where we can see the orange crown.

A beautiful young crown pigeon, how lovely that crown of feathers...

Crown for Looking Close on Friday group.

The way the light has illuminated the top bud kind of reminds me of one of these human chakra diagrams where the crown chakra of enlightenment - the Sahasrara, is lit up. It is normally depicted with a lotus flower, but I think this one does a nice impression. Perhaps on some level, the fact it has thorns adds rather than detracts.....

It's a bit of a stretch I know, I was tempted to put a star burst onit but managed some self restraint, not bad for an old fool on this day.

Berberis Aurea.

That’s James who led me to this hidden spot to view a rock arch at Garrapata State Park. Sitting on the cliff’s edge while juggling 2 cameras (not visible), he is much braver than meâ€Ķ

Happy Friday dear friends!

Tangara xanthocephala

(Saffron-crowned Tanager / TÃĄngara coronada)

Saffron-crowned Tanager is a brightly colored tanager with a distinctive yellow head. This species occurs through the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia, and occupies humid montane forests and secondary woodlands.

Due to human destruction of habitat, it is hypothesized that the population numbers are decreasing. Like most Tangara tanagers, the Saffron-crowned is sexually monomorphic.

A white-crowned sparrow is perched at the Pickleweed Inlet ✔ïļ

Wikipedia: The white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) is a species of passerine bird native to North America. A medium-sized member of the New World sparrow family, this species is marked by a grey face and black and white streaking on the upper head. It breeds in brushy areas in the taiga and tundra of the northernmost parts of the continent and in the Rocky Mountains and Pacific coast. While southerly populations in the Rocky Mountains and coast are largely resident, the breeding populations of the northerly part of its range are migratory and can be found as wintering or passage visitors through most of North America south to central Mexico.

Conservation status: Least Concern

Early spring arrival to Southern Ontario. These are restless, acrobatic birds that move quickly through foliage, typically at lower and middle levels. They flick their wings almost constantly as they go. This makes them very difficult to photograph. (Cornell Lab)

Tilden Botanic Garden, Berkeley, CA

I was at the Botanic Garden with my wife, who was doing an extended bird survey of the Garden with three of her fellow docents. It was a pleasant spring morning weather. This handsome male was preening himself extensively on a branch by the pond, displaying the largest ruby crown that any of us had ever seen (not quite captured in this picture). He was also vocalizing and calling actively now and then.

Melanerpes rubricapillus rubricapillus

(Red-crowned woodpecker / Carpintero habado)

The red-crowned woodpecker (Melanerpes rubricapillus) is a resident breeding bird from southwestern Costa Rica south to Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas and Tobago.

The male has a red crown patch and nape. The female has a buff crown and duller nape. Immature birds are duller, particularly in the red areas of the head and neck.

This woodpecker occurs in forests and semi-open woodland and cultivation. Red-crowned woodpeckers feed on insects, but will take fruit.

Like all species of lemur, Crowned Lemurs are native to Madagascar. They live only in forests at the northern tip of the island where their wild number is estimated at fewer than 10,000.

They get their name from the distinctive crown pattern on the top of their heads. Males have a brown and ginger coat with a black spot at the top of their heads whereas females are more grey in colour with a ginger back.

Crowned lemurs live in groups, called troops, of around 6 but this number can be as high as 15.

This example is captive bred.

Scientists interested in movement and energetics have discovered that White-crowned Sparrows can run on a treadmill at a pace of about one-third of a mile an hour without tiring out. I'd like to know how they got a sparrow to do this???
